Google Home $147 + $10 Shipping @ Catch.com.au

541

Hi guys and girls,

Just found this through my emails, appears to be a good deal compared with whats currently available from the brick and mortar stores.

This is the international version, as quoted below from COTD;

Please note that this product is the international version, and therefore might differ slightly from local versions. An Australian power adapter will be included if appropriate.

Looking at getting one of these myself though I would find more incentive if free delivery was included.

If anyone knows of any current COTD coupons or promos please share and I'll include them in the post.

Don't forget to use Cashrewards for an additional 3.2% discount!

That's ok, they're all the same. The region is set via the Google Home app

  • +3

    Sold out on site already.

  • Unfortinately looks like its sold out, and it was noted as the international version.

  • International version (no biggy) and yeah, sold out already.

FYI, Telstra are apparently adding these as a 'freebie' in their new bundles to launch at the end of July.

why not buy from dwi if its international version ?

    $145 with free shipping

    • Shipping is not free if you're outside a capital city.

    • Thanks, free shipping for me!

  • Can Google Home turn the volume up and down on my TV like Xbox Kinect did?

    • +9

I bought one yesterday, it can't do much unless you have connected services. Can't play music on command unless you have a premium subscription, doesn't talk to any media centers except chromecast, wont tell me when my next train is (i live 200m from a station), won't set reminders.

      • +10

Well, that answers that. It's a glorified speaker.

      • +1

Gee, what do you use it for then?

        • +10

privacy/listening to you for ad targeting?

not much. Thinking of returning it

          @dinna89:

If you have an android phone then then for less than $30 you can make Google Home do loads of things.

          Just need a combination of:
          https://www.banggood.com/Broadlink-Black-Bean-Smart-Home-Wif…

          and

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.…

          and

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joaomgcd.a…

          and some time and effort.

Personally my Google Home is significantly more than just a glorified speaker. It controls all the aircons throughout my house, my tv and stereo, my lights, my robot vacuum cleaner, plays me music, keeps kids entertained, sets timers… its great. And this is before any Australia based actions are released.

        • @mooney: Nice I will buy it now :) thanks mate, autovoice I don't think we need it because google home already has shortcut in there .

        • @Cadic: You DO need autovoice, i forgot to add you need to sign up for a $1 a month subscription in autovoice to enable natural language option and you also need RM Mini plugin for Tasker app.

It's worth it, but if you are not familiar with Tasker (as I wasnt) it has a wee bit of a learning curve- but once you have figured it out its great.

        • @mooney: Is there much delay between the command being recognized and the device switching? I'm surprised at how quickly WeMo switches respond to Google Assistant.

        • +1

@eug: No. On my setup I find it very quick to execute the voice command. I have philips Hue lights and they sometimes are delayed in reacting, but that is a direct link between Google Home and Hue, nothing to do with Tasker/ Autovoice.

        • @mooney: Hi mate, can you show me how to to turn TV off in Tasker via e-control please ?

        • +1

@Cadic: Hard to answer on here.

Do you have econtrol working on your phone/tablet? (ie just through the app?)

          At super high level:
          1) make sure econtrol is working (as this proves your app has the correct codes)
          2) you need RM Plugin for Tasker
          3) Set up your the RM Plugin (a how to is included in the app)
          4) In Tasker add a Task- Plugin- RM plugin.

With tasker you really just have to play around with stuff until it works. I learnt it by following different tutorials online then tweaking until I could get it to do what I wanted- eventually it becomes intuitive but the learning curve is a pain.

Let me know how you go, if you cannot work it out PM me with where you are up to and I will give you a more detailed how to.

          Thanks

        • @mooney: I get E-contrl working from my tablet ( I can turn on/off TV with e-control)
I don't have RM Plugin yet ( maybe that's the missing piece ) I will need to download it I guess
I did link my Autovoice with google home and it works
I haven't try link autovoice and Tasker yet , I guess it plugin in Tasker.
I will try it tonight , if I stuck I will pm you . Thank heap mate .

        • @Cadic: perfect- RM plugin is the key! Good luck.

        • @mooney: It's working now mate :D thanks heap . One more question please , can I set shortcut in google home to turn on TV via autovoice ? so I don't have to tell it open autovoice then give command to autovoice ?

        • @Cadic: Yep. Shortcuts in google home app. It's under 'more settings'

        • @mooney: I know where shortcut it , for e.g I set Ok Google Turn on TV
Response : open auto voice tv on .
          It doesn't work.

        • @Cadic: works for me…

my instruction is 'ask autovoice to turn on tv' whenever I say my shortcut phrase.

        • @mooney: Cool I will try it tonight :)

        • @Cadic: let me know how you got on!!

        • @mooney: It works like charm mate :) thanks again . But I got another problem with my Foxtel remote , I used Tasker look like it learnt Foxtel remote control signal but when I tested it , it didn't work just don't know why, I'm pretty sure Foxtel remote control is IR not RF.

        • +1

@Cadic: Unfortunately Foxtel remotes use a 56kHz carrier frequency, Broadlink uses the more standard 38kHz frequency. Someone mentioned that the Foxtel box will also receive 38kHz signals, so maybe if you can find a preprogrammed code somehow, that could work.

        • @eug: That's explained why thanks heap mate, Ok Google where can I find Preprogrammed code for Foxtel remote control :D

        • @Cadic: My best solution here is to suggest you get rid of Foxtel. Best decision I ever made! Optus for EPL, Apple TV4 and Getflix for everything else. Save $$$ and have more tv to watch than time to watch it!

However if you want to stick with Foxtel my understanding is the issue isn't that it transmits in 38kHz but that it cannot receive the 56kHZ from the foxtel remote. In theory if you can get access to a logitech remote (which has foxtel pre-programmed) then you can use it to transmit to your RM device to learn.

Thanks for the insight.. really interested in what it does well

can it tell you the weather?
can it tell you a joke?

        • +2

I have this for a few weeks now, it's good if you have connected devices like smart light & harmony and Google subscription. If you don't have any of these then the functionality is a bit limited. You can ask for the weather, news, joke, and you can say "I'm feeling lucky" and she will play a trivia game with you.

      • +3

Incorrect in some respects. I have two and they work fine with IFTTT and Logitech Harmony. IFTTT allows you to connect to a wide variety of services/devices. I say "Hey Google, start entertainment" and my TV + soundbar turn on.

Haven't tried the public transport yet, but I know I can order an Uber with it.

I have mine hooked up with WeMo light switches so I am able to turn off/on any lights as well.

      • +1

You can listen to music via Google music for free, you just need to upload your music to it

        • Nope - you can open the app on your phone and cast to Home, but you can't ask Home to play music without a premium sub.

        • +3

@dinna89: I'm using it at home NOW with my free google music account mate.

        • @Cadic:

Maybe i'm wrong, I tried last night, there was no obvious way to designate Google Play Music as my default music player without a subscription - maybe i'm missing something.

Can you explain how you get it to play - do you ask it to play music, or manually cast it from a phone?

edit - it did try to sign me up for a free google play music subscription for 6 months, i declined.

        • +3

@dinna89: I remember it gave you 3 options 1 is subscription second one it upload up to 50k songs so I choose that's option and upload my music. Then I change default to Google Music and it works . You can set playlist as well and tell Google home to play by saying . Ok Google , play music playlist New Album .

        • @Cadic:
I'll give this a go tonight, cheers.

        • +2

          Works, cheers

      • So it's almost useless unless you're subscribed to some non-free services?

      • +1

"When's the next train to Central" works on my Google Home
You can set iOS reminders using IFTT (yes this is a workaround)

      • +2

I love it. Being able to ask the room pointless questions has me picking up my phone far less. Reminders are fine, try: "hey google - remind me to task" @ *date/time". I have had a Pixel since launch and have become pretty familiar with the assistant, I use it to set timers for cooking, calculate/convert, listen to podcasts, music, the news/weather, cast Netflix, and set reminders. It will be nice when you can use it to make/receive calls. I guess it's not for everyone, but as someone already invested in the Google ecosystem it really is great addition.

      • +1

@dinna89: Only connected service needing premium is Spotify? You can use Pandora or Google Music or Youtube without any subscription.

What "media centers" are you referring to? I'd hardly consider a chromecast a media center?
And the Echo doesn't directly talk to your "media center" either so I'm not sure what you expected?

Sounds like you didn't do your research and now you're disappointed - but that says more about you than it does about the device.

And it DOES give you bus and train timetables and weather and all sorts of other details based on your location, so you're obviously doing something wrong.

Admittedly, it can't set reminders at the moment which is a much talked about shortcoming.

You have to consider the Home is a lot newer than the Echo and things are still being integrated.
There are a lot of things not fully integrated with the Google Home 'yet'… but 90% of them can be worked around using IFTTT or using IFTTT with a Logitech Harmony.

      • +3

You can do quite a few things via IFTTT
Here some recipes (calls dont work in Oz)
        https://ifttt.com/google_assistant

I use it for the yeelights & also to give answers to specific questions (e.g. whose right? Daddy is always right.)

And you can add events to your google calendar.

Yeah setting language/location to Oz has removed Pandora since they moved out of oz. But I must admit having a google music/youtube red subscription makes it great, especially youtube music & being able to cast youtube vis to the tv for the kids.

Here's a list of features/things it can do.

        http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/04/19/apps-services-will-w…

      • Doesn't it stream music you have bought or matched from the Google Play store? I have a huge music library there so can anyone confirm that it does work please.

        • Just got home, works with google play, but it's not obvious how to set it up, see cadic's post above

        • @dinna89: Thanks buddy!

      • I believe you need to "personalise" it through the Home app. Mine sets reminders fine.

  • Does it speak English or Amercian?

    • Neither, it speaks Gengish. 😁

      • Local Stock will speak Australian…

        • +11

Me: "Google - can you turn Netflix on please?"
GoogleHome: "yeh no (profanity) worries cobber"

    • +1

I have an imported Google Home and initially set it up using English (US) language. It spoke with an American voice.
The other day (after learning of Google Home's Australian release) I changed the language to English (AU) and now it speaks with an Australian voice plus it can now deliver news from Australian sources.

Strangely, when set to US it could "play me the sound of a fireplace/rain/thunderstorm" but now it's set to AU it doesn't know how to do that. I wonder what else has been removed for Australia?

      • Ok Google, play the national anthem

Ok Google, play the national anthem

      • If you changed to Australian version , many apps removed from Google home, you don't have app assistant and no shortcut as well

      • +1

I believe next month the additional assistant 'actions' will be released to the Oz version. Until then its best to stick with US of A.

  • I'm deciding between Google Home and just using a spare phone with Google Assistant hooked up to a Bluetooth speaker. Is there anything Google Home can do that a phone can't?

    • I didn't think you could ask it to throw on videos to your TV via mobile phone?

    • +4

I bought one the other day and am now returning it.
      - It can't make calls through your phone,
      - it cannot read other calendars appointments or info other than what is in your gmail (expected i guess).
      - It does not have any free streaming services, only Spotify and Google Play and Youtube red all require subscription (but offer 6 months free which need credit card details to start off)
      - you are obviously required a fair bit of equipment to utilize the automation.
      - Does not cast to a Samsung TV - only Chromecast specific TV's, even if you can cast to a non android TV from your phone, this does not support that
      - If you create an alarm, it stays on the google home, doesn't sync up to your phone clock (expected), but you will have to walk in to the room and talk to it to disable it. Same with timer
      - 'adding to shopping list' is a list within the google home app and not google keep, so you have to dig around for it.

Other than that, it has a great microphone which is incredibly sensitive, and is very very responsive every time, works for simple questions etc. You can cast photos from your google photo library to your tv 'show me pictures of buildings', and it will from your library. You can cast a youtube video to your tv quickly (although it sometimes plays the 'audio version' instead of video which isn't accurate. I'm sure it will be able to do alot more with time.

    • If I want to turn on the light in my kitchen – a lamp that's attached to a WeMo wifi-controlled power switch – I have to whisper that request to Google Home on my phone, making sure I'm quiet enough that the speaker doesn't also hear me.

Just wanted to mention that that point is incorrect. My friend in Melb controls his WeMo lights from his Google Home speaker without issues.

  • Last year I was struggling to get Google Home or Amazon Echo
Finally picked up a Amazon Echo Dot at the London Heathrow Airport during transit

    • +1

Down side, everything else such as news, weather, direction for US.

      • True. Now I am waiting for Amazon to launch in Australia (Late 2017)
Once they officially launched, all local services will be available including News, weather etc
Together with placing orders in Amazon Australia site via Amazon Echo

  • Is it possible to have your calendar etc on one Google account, and your play music sub on a different account? Will it know which account to use for each scenario?

    • (i have the australian one)

If you link your accounts it gets you to say a few things, then can differentiate you from other people. If I say "hey google, add x to my calendar", it will add it to mine, if my partner says the same it will add it to hers. You can also say "hey google, who am I?" it will then say who it recognises you as. Works the same for the shopping list.

      Edit.

Sorry didn't read your question properly. If you associate both accounts it will use the account with the subscription when you ask it to play netflix/music etc.

      • Thanks that's useful. But what if my wife wants to access my play music account?

        • Edited my comment, sorry I skimmed it the first time around

        • @SmartestAlec: no worries. Excellent. Sounds like it will work then. Cheers!

        • What if she wants to access your sent sms records Atlas? A scary prospect :\
