  • Thanks OP. This is great!

No problem. They have is slightly cheaper on Amazon but can not be delivered to Australia.

Just a quick note, you should pay with 28Degree or cards that don't charge international transaction fee. I was so careless and used commbank credit card and got charged 3% in my last order with newegg :(

Think I'd spend the 429 and get the 7700K
    https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117726&cm_re=7700k--19-117-726--Product

Raw comparisons put the 7700 way ahead…

however actual reviews peg them fairly evenly..

the additional cores would be nice though…
    http://www.legitreviews.com/intel-core-i7-7700k-versus-amd-r…

I guess if your using the extra cores the AMD would be the way to go…

    • +2

More games in the future will use more cores because the market is shifting to accommodate them, so the Ryzens will wind up being future-proofed for much longer compared to 7700K.

      • +3

I respectfully disagree with that. We've had multicore processors for ~10 years now and clock rate is still what games rely on. Games seem to want less threads computed faster.

        • Yes but compare the core usage on everything but games, in 3 years games will be utilising cores more efficiently, patches for recent games have specifically been realised already for ryzen and its early days of cheap non business focused processes.

        • +1

Have you never played just cause 3? all my 4 cores go max, 1070 isn't maxed

Some games do use all available threads…

The other thing is I would use other cores for my background tasks, like browser, chat windows etc. on other screen

But ultimately choose what you want, both are great options

        • @rokkz:
          Joaby only mentioned games

        • @menvert:
from what google suggests - just cause 3 seems to max out on a lot of CPUs which suggests bad coding i reckon. BF1 looks amazing and will always max the GPU before maxing high spec'd CPUs.

        • @ideasman: And have you seen the real-world FPS dif especially when above 1080p? stuff all . If you want to stay CPU dependent on 720p/1080p yep 7700k is fanatastic and an overkill. catch 22.

        • @ganymede:

it is interesting that those are the two videos or reviews that favor the ryzen for gaming. the comments of the vids suggest the same. maybe i'm focusing on mainstream sites/reviewers?

        • @ideasman:

Plenty more videos on YouTube, here's another big comparisons (30 games titles) on cheaper the Ryzen 5 1600 vs the new i7 7800X:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 vs. Intel Core i7-7800X: 30 Game Battle!

          Look at ($290)Ryzen 5 1600 vs ($510)i7 7800X and ($450)i7 7700K

Or $430.20 from computer alliance in the current eBay 20% off sale

  • It's cheap for a reason. The accompanying motherboard chipsets are a mess.

    • +1

Want to expand on that a bit more? Because a comment like that on its own doesn't mean much.

      • RAM compatibility mainly. The AGESA code on these is in a bad state. Even if you get memory from the QVL, the updates that are being pushed out can render your machine unusable.

Have a trawl through here if you'd like to know more.

        • Your obviously not aware of the Intel i9
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWFzWRoVNnE

        • Thanks, that puts your comment in a bit more context.

I'm aware that there have been some memory issues with AM4, but everyone that I know with Ryzen gear hasn't had any major issues. A couple had to update their bios to get the most of their ram, but that's it.

I guess I'll find out soon enough for myself- I've got a 1700 at home that I'll be playing with over the weekend.

Can't say I agree with your 'cheap for a reason' comment though. More a case of $AUD being a bit higher and Newegg pricing being good I suspect. I haven't read anywhere that the price of Ryzen CPUs is impacted by the memory issues that some have faced.

This seems to be a good summery of the AGESA / memory compatibility thing, unless anyone has a better source?

        • @mr626:

I wish you good fortune with your build. Hopefully the combo you've chosen will be trouble free.

My comment about the price was that the CPU price (relative to Intel) is lower because AMD have sunk less money into developing their accompanying chipsets and microcode.

      It's cheap for a reason

Yes, discounted to grab more market share at a time when Intel's new X releases are in a mess. It's a smart strategy. A month ago I would have based on new build on an Intel but now I've decided to go Ryzen.
