Spam posts

I wonder. With all the spam posts and being removed n'all.

What happens to the accounts? I they deactivated too or is it like a strike system?
Some of the titles look interesting, and I for one would be keen to still see them.

It's probably a case of FOMO, can see the greyed out title, can't see the content.

      With orange hi-vis leathers :)

  • Specifically SPAM, the accounts get banned permanently as they are almost 99.99% overseas users who just bombard different forums. There are a lot of automated mechanisms that automatically block spammers before they can post, as well as not being able to post for at least 24 hours (spammers forget to come back).

Last month, SPAM only accounted for about 10% of deals/forum posts removed so it isn't a big issue.

  • The recent "Hi Everyone!" post seemed okay…

@greenpossum: no, i sold it to an advertising company

          @nocure: thank you!!

      • Nothing, as far as I could tell, it was just someone posting in the "introduce yourself" section basically saying they liked OZB and find it useful, pretty boring (but perhaps pointless) stuff.

        • It's the behind the scenes stuff that matters. :) It's why we encourage people to report things as we have more information on hand to make a decision.

Speaking hypothetically of course, a tactic of Spammers is to attempt to make legit posts and comments to disguise themselves as legit users. Then comes the SPAM.

The best tactic we've seen recently is scraping another post and then sandwiching SPAM in between. The following scraped this post and if it wasn't for Korean in the title, it wouldn't have been caught so fast.

        • @neil: Oh I see. Thought there might be more to it!

I made comments on 3 posts these last few days where the whole post was deleted yet they weren't spammy.

I think Ozbargain is getting a little too over-moderated at this stage.

    • lol goldilocks

      • I know that when one of my beautifully-crafted and lovingly-conceived posts gets deleted I become a little disenfranchised with posting or contributing and go to other forums.

        • i know what you mean. But i think if they leave bad posts it would encourage people. I don't think there is any easy answer.
You could just be more selective as to where you comment

    • -1

It's been like that for a while.

      • Overmoderating SPAM? Perhaps we'll make a new category for Viagra, dodgy casinos, psychics, and money laundering scams.

        • +1

Not the spam part but the over moderation in general. I've seen small (and often hilarious) jokes get deleted for petty reasons.

I understand this is your site and you can do as you wish but a lot of those jokes are harmless.

        • @ChillBro: I haven't seen that?

        • @ChillBro: Bring back the "Can i die from eating expired mints?" post, that had potential.

        • @ChillBro:

It's hard to comment without knowing the context of your example but jokes are fine however when they cross the line to being attacks on other users, then we act on it. Some may take comments with a thick skins however others may not wherein it affects their mental health. It's why we have a mental health page and support R U OK? Day which encourages meaningful conversations with others.

Comments are only being removed at a rate of 1.21% of 978,293 comments in 2016 and that number has been consistent for the past few years. (2015: 1.11%, 2014: 1.11%, 2013: 1.03%).

We want a respectful and positive community and hope everyone understands that.

    • You've only made 1 comment in the past few days in one removed post. The post was "Can i die from eating expired mints?" and the conclusion was No.

I replace your reality with my own.

      • I guess it would be useful have that added to the FAQ incase anyone else was wondering.
