R U OK OzBargainers? (2016)

Last Thursday, someone in my partner's family took their life. He was young and vibrant and you'd of never guessed anything was wrong. He was smart, funny, doing well in his career and well liked.

The hardest part is wondering if you could have done something to prevent it. Just said something, just spent more time.

Don't wait for a free call day. Ring someone who you haven't spoken to for a while. Your Mum or Dad, brother, sister, friend from school, a former job - just one person.

R U OK?

R U OK? Day is an annual day in September (today, 8/9) dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference and even save lives.

Some may notice that we've used the same quote above as last years post. It's such a powerful story that it's worth mentioning again. It is part of why we are proud to support R U OK? Day by changing our colours and promoting their cause.

One of the biggest challenges to OzBargain and other community sites is promoting an environment where everyone feels comfortable commenting in deals and discussions. Given OzBargain is about scrutinizing deals in an open and honest environment, we can sometimes get negative comments that affect other users.

We should all recognise that our comments have consequences both positive and negative. People don't come here to be attacked or bullied. While some people may say suck it up and people should not be so sensitive, we should be aware that we don't truly know the people behind these accounts. Some are young, some may come to here to escape a tough reality, be mentally unbalanced, or they possibly could have thick skin. We just don't know. On the flip side, something as a simple gesture like thanking someone or sending a friendly PM can go a long way.

Ask family, friends and collegues (possibly utilizing free Virgin calls) how they are doing but don't forget to ask your family of OzBargainers how they are doing. We have forums where you can discuss relationships or anything else off-topic.

You can also feel free to chat with us in the private Talk with a Moderator forum if you have any OzBargain related issues. Or send me a PM about whatever you want (except moderation issues). Please see our Mental Health Page if you need to speak to someone including live chat.

For confidential advice and support call a crisis support line – such as Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.

        You are King of the Negs JV !! We all love you

      • Guess you meant Sleep

      • ditto

      • Sorry to be ignorant JV, but whose pic is this on your profile? Apparently Clear also used the same pic with some colors. Also, what does JV stand for in your case? You can ignore if it's private. :)

        • +2

          Whose pic is on your profile?

          Are you related to the 2 OzBargainers that posted above you?

        • +1

          @jv: Yup.. bargainly-related. My profile doesn't have any pic. Yours does.

        • +1

          @virhlpool:

          Mine came with that pic. They all did, but soon after I joined, it changed to the orange one.

          Clear joined after me, so he got his in colour…

        • @jv: Orange one looks alien though. It has no face, ear, nose and eyes. My profile never had that pic though. It always had this alien. May be you were lucky.

        • +2

          @virhlpool: Its JV … Jules Verne :-)

          I think they changed it to be gender neutral and encourage more females to join OzBargain.

        • @bluesky: I was looking for this answer but JV and I started playing game and I got distracted. Thanks, BlueSky. I am ignorant for sure - don't know this great man. How bad!

          don't know this great man.

        • +1

          @jv: JV first then BlueSky. Where does JV get the name from? BlueSky seems to get it from the sky above.

      I thought I needed a new video card…

      • +30

        I think so. You are looking a bit dull lately jv.

      • You probably do. It's probably colourblind from overuse in producing orange/yellow colours.. and maybe a bit of grey from your pic.

      • I think that we all need a new video card in our lives… Any specials on GTX Titan Xs?

      • +9

        I thought JB Hi-Fi had hijacked OzBargain.

        Go get some rest, you'll feel better tomorrow.

        Soak your feet in 1 part vinegar, 1 part warm water for 20 mins.

        It's okay, I don't trust a bearded man in robes too.

        • +1

          Hey… am bearded too.. and dont mind wearing a robe every now and then.. All I need is the recipe to make wine from water.

        • @FindMeADeal: that's easy.

          Step 1. Mix water and grapes.
          Step 2. Remove water.
          Step 3. Crush grapes
          Step 4. Pay me $ to find out the rest of the secret recipe.

        • +1

          @rompastompa: Are you Okay rompastompa?

        • @FindMeADeal:

          No he's on a wrath… with grapes.
          He's literally rompin' stompin' on them.

    From knowing heaps of depressed people and people who cut themselves to feel good, I can say for certain their lives get better.
    There are ups and downs for everyone in life and suicide is NEVER a solution.
    That said the global suicide rate is alarming and even if society seems apathetic there are always people who will love and care for you.

    • Dan Andrews isn't helping…

      • Always banging on blaming Daniel Andrews for everything. Ozbargain is for the discussion of bargains, not politics…
        (http://www.premier.vic.gov.au/labor-delivers-20-million-to-r…)

        • Always banging on blaming Daniel Andrews for everything

          Not everything, but he's been absolutely disastrous with Sky rail, screwing the CFA and stealing the assets off the Taxi drivers.

        • @jv:
          LOL

        • Ozbargain is for the discussion of bargains, not politics…

          This is in the forums and this topic is not about bargains…

          Maybe you should report Neil to the mods if you don't think this topic should be discussed.

        • @jv:

          This is in the forums and this topic is not about bargains…

          Yes, exactly, it's a forum post about mental health, yet you manage to bring politics in it. True to form you comment off-topic, just like you do in other deals, always whinging completely about Daniel Andrews.

          Thanks for the neg on my comment too; that gave me a laugh.

        • +1

          @ripsnorter:

          it's a forum post about mental health

          Thus, my comment on Dan Andrews is very topical…

        • @jv:

          Like how Daniel Andrews is relevant to everything Uber and every other time you bring him up. Whatever you say, jv.

          My point is, it would be nice to see some more positive messages from you; maybe promote good mental health rather than making off-topic comments or trying to tear down people's posts.

        • -1

          @ripsnorter:

          maybe promote good mental health

          there you go… http://goo.gl/GQTEQ1

          Now back on topic. Dan Andrews is an absolute tool. He is the cause of mental health issues. Two taxi drivers have already suicided because of his threat to take the licences that they own off them. They would have be left without assets and without a job.
          There are also hundreds of CFA volunteers currently suffering depression because of what the Andrews Government are doing to them.

        • +1

          @jv:

          LOL you have no idea what you are talking about and are clearly incredibly biased. Keep the focus on the lame dad jokes and OP bagging; I prefer even that over this.

        • @ripsnorter:

          LOL you have no idea what you are talking about

          Maybe, but I know one of the families who's dad suicided. But I guess you know more…

        • -1

          @jv:

          So that is Daniel Andrews fault? I'm sorry to hear that. Probably helps explain why you are so anti-Uber.

          If you actually want to have a conversation feel free to private message me.

        • @ripsnorter:

          So that is Daniel Andrews fault?

          Yes. He's stealing their assets from them.
          These people bought each licence from the government for $180,000.
          Now Dan Andrews wants to pay them almost $400K less than what the government took for them for 3 taxis.
          What's more, Dan says he will pay in instalments over 8 years. WT ???
          No assets, no job. How are they supposed to pay back their loans for the money they gave the government?

          Of course they're going to be depressed. Of course some of them will take their own lives. Of Course Dan Andrews is at fault.

        • -1

          @jv:

          If you actually want to have a conversation feel free to private message me.

        • @ripsnorter:

          I'd rather private message Dan, but he seems to to get very agitated when someone disagrees with his views… Not dissimilar to Saddam, Kim Jong Un, Putin, Trump…

    This is great, had a friend commit suicide recently. Glad to see Ozbargain putting out the awareness

        Let's call it a night

    I started seeing a psychologist this week after thoughts of suicide. It's been hard but its helping and it's FREEE if you are a uni student (perhaps this can be posted into Freebies section haha)

    Anyone who's feeling down, don't give up. Seek help because it gets better.

    If you are a poor ass uni student search up CAPS (Counselling and Psychological Services)

    @UNSW https://www.counselling.unsw.edu.au/
    @USYD http://sydney.edu.au/current_students/counselling/
    @unimelb http://services.unimelb.edu.au/counsel

    • +20

      There is also an option if you aren't a uni student. Anybody can go see their GP and they have the option to refer you, Medicare will cover 10 sessions in a calendar year for you and they cover MOST of the fee. I started the same process a few months back and it was only a $20 gap fee which you can't really complain about when it comes to your health.

      You are absolutely right when you say it helps, I put it off for a long time and I regret that now, the hardest part is admitting to yourself that you need help but it's all uphill from there. Glad you are feeling better too. :)

      • +3

        Bulk billing psychologists exist. So you don't need to pay anything for the 10 sessions.

        • They do but they are cutting down on it. Somebody I know was dropped as a patient along with ~50 others apparently because the psychologist couldn't do it anymore. Other psychologists were the same, that was the path I was originally going to take but they were all cutting their patients.

        • +1

          @AngryAlfred: Sums up bulk billing in general really. Many medical practices have gone under because of it.

    • +3

      Thank you for sharing!

      Hopefully others in your situation follow the same path you've taken :D

    • what do they even talk to you about?

      • My (unqualified) advice - If you even think there's a small maybe that you should see a psychologist - just do it. Many people are amazed at the benefit. But, like all professionals, you may have to see more than one until you find someone that you "click" with.

    Great idea. Hope everyone is having a fantastic day!!!!

  • Oh I see now I get it.

  • +2

    Love the colour! Hope everyone has a great day!

  • +3

    You gave jv a reason to comment more!

    Fully support the post btw, don't take the above statement in the wrong way :)

    This site and community has its good and bad eggs, same as every other corner of the internet, but I'd like to think that it's a majority positive site :) after all, we come here to save some money (and then spend it on crap we weren't expecting to spend it on!), how can you be negative about that?!

    • Are one of the te bad egg ? :P

      Are you OK Spackbace ?

    • What about Broden?

  • Although I'm thankful you didn't change the android menu to yellow as well, though the orange and yellow clash bad :/

  • +7

    I am OK, hope everyone is as well, if you are not I wish all the best on your path to reaching OK.

    Regarding the topic; I'd like everyone to check out NextStep by Reachout.com. I'm not associated with them in any way. I found out about it a while back, it's been really helpful to me personally and I would recommend it to anyone looking for any form of initial help due to it's simple and welcoming nature.

  • +3

    Sincerely hope everyone is feeling okay!

  • +3

    I think this is a great initiative! Everyone should feel as though they can go and ask any questions or seek support from each other comfortably. May all of us and those we know be safe, healthy and happy. In dark times, just remember things will get better.

  • +4

    love how the first deal on my home page is this with the new layout :D

  • +8

    How do you strike up a conversion to something that is so sensitive? I just feel anxious talking about this. I have a friend who I've been worrying about and want to rekindle.

    p.s. This is a really wonderful campaign!

    • +6

      I know what you mean, it is hard to bring up the conversation, since you can never be sure how it will be received.
      But since there is a designated RUOK day, it makes it easier to breach the topic. You can simply say to your friend that this is RUOK day, and on this day friends are meant to check on each other to see if they are OK. So it is a lot less awkward bringing up the topic.

    • +14

      See this page. It gives you steps on how to ask.

      • Good info, thanks.
