    Lion Dance classes!

    Better than Kevin's classes?

    • That is a movie how is that relevant? Get your facts straight.

    • +5

Lol, why does jv always get downvoted, like its a joke. Is there a circlejerk or something about always negging jv?

      • Yeah I get banned all the time for doing things like that on here

      • no he doesn't always get downvoted

Have a look at his posts, he gets lots of love too

  • +1

    Wow i need this

  • +3

    Interesting business model.

    • Pay extra to not get used as a punching bag.

  • So, how do these guys make money? I assume that it'll involve them saying "why don't you come along to this other class, too?" or something along those lines?

    • +8

More a case they charge a lot for grading and other events you're compelled to attend.

So whereby you may save $20 a session, maybe a 104 sessions a year if really keen ($2080 in value) you'll pay around $500 for grading every three months.

I could be wrong, he could also be a billionaire just giving back to the world…. :/ but the above is a typical practice.

      • +2

Apparently they dont even charge grading fees according to their site.

      • +4

their casual drop-in classes are $10 a session

but unlimited classes is $20/month (so this deal is worth $240)

not sure why they advertise it as saving $380

EDIT: going by the past deals, this looks legit - uniform prices are reasonable too

      • +14

I've been to this, there's no grading. Just a weekly sessions of learning new moves and practicing. If you wanted to continue after a few weeks, they expect you to buy their uniform (which doesn't cost too much). My friends enjoyed the classes very much and have been able to join in on the lion dance after the free year eg RMIT graduation 2016, Chinese New Year :).

They have family history with Kung Fu and seem to want to pass down their martial arts knowledge to a wide range of people.

    • +1

I'd guess they charge for uniform, weapons (when/ if you get to that level) and extra classes. A Kung Fu school that only has a single Saturday class per week seems odd tbh. Perhaps OP can explain?

    • +18

      http://www.jowgakuen.com.au/liondance.html

pretty sure they're primarily a lion dance performance business. they get paid about $1000 for a 30minute show, and will have numerous shows each weekend. over the chinese new year period, they'll easily make $50k. you can see how busy they get on their facebook page.
in a way, this post is an invitation to have free lessons, to become a competent lion dancer, and work for the business.

obviously you can't turn up for a week and get into a lion. only students that train with them long enough are invited to perform etc. Obviously the students thoroughly enjoy themselves, or they wouldn't do it, so that way everyone is happy. It's a prestigious deal to have performances like this at weddings and businesses etc, so the customers are very happy too.

    • +18

Omg here we go. I'm no Kung Fu guy but seriously, doing any martial art class for a while will at least help you throw a punch, do a kick, learn how to fall over and not hurt yourself, and also defend yourself. Sure you aren't going to fight in the UFC, but it is beneficial.

You shouldn't practice any of this stuff if you want to "fight". Go do BJJ and man grind that aggression out of you.

      • Yeah practice more BJ on the ground and own

        • +1

          practice more BJ

          Sound advice.

      • -7

Dont get me wrong, i do admit it is a good exercise. but there are too many doggy things going on with it.

here you go, just go to 1.33, see how quick a 'kongfu master' get shut down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo2ZoCAhTTo

      • +2

All styles have flaws. A major disadvantage of BJJ is that once you're on the ground you're prone to getting stomped on by his mate.

      • I disagree. a lot of martial arts classes will actually teach you bad habits on how to throw punches or kicks. Throwing punches in horse stance is absolutely worthless and many schools teach you to hold out your punches extended at the end instead of immediately pulling them back which is terrible for self defence and may be worse than no training at all. I have been to a school like this before when I was young and can confirm I learned nothing about practical self defence and was not beneficial. That attitude that any martial art class will help you defend yourself is very incorrect. In fact it can give you a false sense of security that you can actually fight.

Not all schools are like this. There are some more practical Kung Fu styles (e.g. San Shou) and I don't know this particular school so I can't comment. However, if you want to learn to punch and kick it is much safer to just join a kickboxing/muay thai gym.

        • @Xastros, I understand where you are coming from. You however need to understand the difference between training and fighting. Horse stance is for training. It used to be rudimentary training to build strength, the beginning of the journey.

        • @yk300: Like I said I don’t know this particular school so it may be good. The school I went to, horse stance was integral part of training for students of all levels.

I would argue that even if horse stance is used just for the beginning of the journey, it adds limited value in my opinion. If you want to build leg strength and endurance there are much better ways. Also the point of horse stance is that it is stable and helps prevent you from falling or being knocked over. In practice, it is actually quite a useless stance, no successful fighter (even in striking only competition) ever fights in wide horse stance like in the movies because it limits mobility too much.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not a Kung Fu hater. In fact I even sat through that horrible movie Forbidden Kingdom just to watch Jet Li and Jackie Chan go at it. I enjoy watching Kung Fu and don’t want it to die out. However as a generalisation, if you want to be good at kicking and punching, you are much more likely to get that at a kickboxing school where they are almost guaranteed to teach you the proper way to punch and kick. There may be some good Kung Fu schools around that manage to teach you to fight in a practical way but these are the exception rather than the norm. One of the posts mentions that this school uses headgear which is a good sign. Many schools do not even allow you to punch each other in the head. As a hard and fast rule, if a striking martial art school doesn’t allow punches to the head, it is worthless for practical fighting as it doesn’t teach you to deal with by far the number one most used attack in fighting

Free is free though so try it out and see if you like it.

        • @Xastros:

I used to do horse stance too. Though I don't anymore, I see the value of it. It is a tool for training.

I do agree. Martial arts are diluted nowadays for a number of reasons. Many don't understand the practicality of it anymore.

Not really interested to try (nor am I in Vic). I'd like to believe I've done my time going around looking. haha

    • +9

you wouldn't join this club to learn to fight, because that's not what they teach. Jow ga kuen is a performance style, not a combat style. their training is primarily for lion dancing. and they're very popular and good at what they do.

      • Why did lklk901 get negged and not you even though you said the same thing?

        • dunno. maybe i was more specific? i'm not sure

        • @kracken: I guess people just skipped this thread after seeing me getting so many negs :)

Considering I live 5 minutes from here and sat around in my pants until 2pm this saturday playing on my phone, I figure this might be a good bit of exercise/get me out of the house/is fairly near some decent cafes for lunch afterwards. So I signed up.

Will let you all know if it's some kind of organ harvesting scam.

    • +16

or if they expect you to paint lots of fences and waxing cars

Enjoy!! :D You might even make new friends :)

    • +1

probably but it's free and unlike people paying $20 a session to do the same thing.

    • One Punchhhhhh!

    • No, its not Karate :p

  • guys you're not going to learn self defence or any combat here, that's not the purpose of this style. it's a very beautiful performance style, and all of the training is for a practitioner to perfect their lion dancing. don't go there expecting a bunch of tough guys who are gonna rough you up. the class is full of very civil, very nice people who love their art. NONE of them can fight or even defend themselves in a combat sense, because that's not what they train for. and you will not learn to defend yourself either (except perhaps from an attacker who will strike you in slow motion, and then hold the strike at full extension until you counter).
You're going to have a very average work out.
You definitely won't learn any combat self defence.
You will meet a class full of nice people who are genuinely passionate about their art.
You will learn lion dancing, and if you get good enough at it you will be invited to perform in their work.
Their style is more "art" less "martial". It's not very fair to expect more or less than that.

    • +8

      Kracken who are you?
We are a combat style, our classes are focused on striking.
Whats your name and when did you join our martial arts school?
Your saying we cant fight? Please come down for a sparring match.

      • um, ok any rules? or is it just going to be a slug fest?

        • +9

I'll PM you so we can organised a friendly sparring match. With gloves, groin guard, and head gear. Rules are basically similar to MMA rules.

        • um, ok any rules?

No touching of the hair or face.

        • +4

          @kungfufoundation:

          friendly

You forgot to use inverted commas.

        • @stemcell:

Head on down keyboard warrior, stand up for your keyboard friends.

          You will be next!

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

I'm no keyboard warrior like the rest of you, I'm quite sure kungfufoundation would kick my ass but I'd at least try, you can be oh so brave online but when it's time to man up in the real world you all turn to jelly and look the other way…I know your sort.

        • @stemcell:

I'll see you behind the toilet block after school!

        • +5

          @stemcell:
do you mean i'm a keyboard warrior? Everything i've said has been courteous, respectful and objective. i've even been purposefully careful not to sound aggressive as i share my thoughts.
also, i wasn't the one who initiated a fight. I'll take it up, but i didn't initiate it.
i still believe that ozbargain is a place where people can openly share their opinions about products, services and yes even martial arts schools. so that's what i did.

        • +1

          @kungfufoundation:

          Please record / upload video.

I certainly don't want to see anyone beaten up - but we are not talking "beating" here - just a friendly sparing match. Would like to see how it goes.

        • @kracken:

          So naive young kracken.

        • @stemcell: ok maybe i'm naive, but i'm not a keyboard warrior. those guys are pretty much trolls

        • @stemcell:

I can tell how this is going to turn out lol

        • @kikiki: how's it going to turn out?

        • @kracken:

You did a good job. Just wanted to comment that they know how to fight, especially F.

        • @kikiki:
          Who is F?

        • @kracken:are you still talking
Thought you were going to show everyone how to dance fight
          5,6,7,8….

        • @Beach Bum:
After corresponding with the OP, he decided to retract the sparring challenge with a full apology, admitting in detail that my comments on this post are correct. I'll post his apology not in spite, but to help inform people about what to expect if they go to train there at Jow Ga Kuen (which was my original, respectful intention).

      • hahaha Snap

      • Please post this sparring match on Youtube. Might just trump the Karate Kid reboot that is slated for release Youtube Red if Ozbargainers all view it haha.

      • Good to see a different opinion gets you this riled up, I think he was wrong in what he said though.
You don't sound that 'civil' or 'nice'.

        • the OP was good enough to write a full apology though

    • NONE of them can fight or even defend themselves in a combat sense,

      Thanks for the tip.

  • I will fight for the honour of ozbargain!!

Just noticed you're in Victoria and I am in Queensland, dammit
Ok ,one day when you least expect it,
    Haaaaaaayaaa!

  • Any classes for women? And if not, do other women do it? I did wing chun for a little while 15 years ago and there were 2 girls and a ton of big angry dudes looking to learn to crack heads, it was unpleasant.

    • +1

Angry man hit head, woman hit nut

    • Look at their Facebook page. A lot of girls train with them. I think because everyone is genuinely nice. They're there to learn the art, not crack heads

    • +1

A lot of girls participate :). One of them was my senior from my high school.

Yes classes for woman is passive style
    ' comply can do '
Just lie on the ground and try to take it in the kidneys and flank

      • Yes you're getting the hang of it,
now froth at the mouth a bit as well

  • interesting~

    thank you

  • +1

Here is the apology from the OP, retracting his sparring challenge, and agreeing that my previous comments were correct. I removed my name for privacy, but besides that it is completely unedited.

    Hi -,

Please accept our apology. I'm deeply sorry for my ego.
Your right we don't have much fighting, combat and sparring experience, and also we don't spar as well.
We definitively are a performance style not a combat style since all the movements are like a dance for visual, demo and performance purposes.
You are also correct the training is situated for lion dance as we are more lion dance focused and are good at lion dance.
Jow Ga Kuen in the other hand is a art we practice to preserve the forms, which are like dance movements but beautifully executed.
We'd like to take back the comment of the spar and apologies for our ego and arrogance.
If your interested in learning lion dance please feel free to come down.

    Yours Sincerely
    Peace

    • +1

anyone who said I'm a keyboard warrior for accepting a sparring challenge completely misunderstood my clear intentions. I was informing people of what to expect if they start training at Jow Ga Kuen. I don't need to restate my comments, you can read them above.
The only thing I was wrong about was that the class is full of genuinely nice people. Some of the antagonistic replies to my comments were from Jow Ga Kuen students (the OP stated this in our correspondence). I still think that most of the class would be nice, but from the post here you can tell that some are not. Take that into consideration if that's something that's something important to you, and a reason you would become part of a martial arts family.

      • You've managed to get a retraction from someone apparently associated with a business trying to promote themselves on ozbargain

While making yourself look agro, petty , immature and lacking much of a sense of humour

Give yourself a pat on the back
