  • Yesss, Dual Nano switch!

  • I'm looking for a remote lock for my garage door - some sort of solenoid locking bar would do the trick.
Do any of the "Smart Home" vendors make anything like this ?

    • I have a suggestion…. I rigged up my own Zwave garage door opener using a relay…and my observation is if the relay is "closed" which closes the switch (i.e. joins the terminals) that normally triggers the garage door to open/close, then no matter what anybody does it will be un-openable…. i.e. normal garage remotes can't open it any more. IT can be freed up, by simply triggering the relay to open, and then it's business as usual for the normal remotes.

this is not the same as the lock you may be locking for, but it might achieve similar result?

      hope it helps!

      • Thanks - I already have a door motor, but what I'm looking for is an additional lock on top of the locking provided by the motor. I think you'd be able to brute-force your way past the motor fairly easily. But with a separate lock, the door physically won't open unless you can put together enough force to break the steel locking bar.

    • Don't know of anything specific but you could look at bolting on something like this: https://capitalsmarthomes.com.au/products/vision-z-wave-dead…. Either inside or outside (inside would probably look better) mounted on a cut out the same width as a door frame. Then on the garage door itself put the latch. Might want to actually mount it on its back so the garage door automatically locks when it closes. Otherwise you might be able to find a digital/analogue bridge or maybe use something like https://capitalsmarthomes.com.au/collections/fibaro/products… to open/close a generic electronic lock/solenoid.

      • That would do the trick. There's things like this - http://august.com/products/august-smart-lock/ - which are basically the same idea. I could mount that to the door frame inside the garage, using a deadbolt poking through the side of the door that would hold it in place. Obviously I'd need to unlock the lock with my phone before using the remote to tell the door to open :-)

        • ….and also need to make sure you lock it again after the garage closes - and not before it closes as it's a dead bolt. I think that would be a reason why something like a standard lock & latch might be better as it can automatically lock as the garage door closes. Frankly, a gate latch (https://www.bunnings.com.au/syneco-zinc-plated-gate-latch_p4…) with a servo would probably do the trick as well.

ooh - probably also want to make sure that you hook it up to the garage door opener itself, or setup a scene that unlocks the door then opens the door. Would not want it to be trying to open the door whilst the door is locked….

  • What's the best hub to run these with?

I had the FIbaro HCL and hated it. Gone back to IoT with Wemo for now.

    • +2

HomeSeer to run on a PC or Home Assistant on a rPi probably the best 2 options.

    • +1

I used Homeseer on a pc for ages - was good, but a bit high maintenance in particular when trying to setup simple interfaces on tablets/mobiles. There are many home brews out there using a raspberry pi that are worth a look at, in particular if you already have a z-wave USB key. In general I found them to be a little too high maintenance as well.

Personally I decided to use a Vera. It's not perfect but I overlook most of its foibles in exchange for its ease of use, and I use ImperiHome on the mobile when I need to control things manually. I also use Google Home for voice commands, although currently via a hack (direct support is 'coming soon') using HA Bridge on a 'pi.

What is wrong with the Vera? Well, not a lot - the base system only does 'if this, then that'. No 'else' or 'or' etc. Pretty basic in other words. You can do stuff with LUA if you are that way inclined, or use plugins (of which there are many, including support for the likes of WeMo) to extend things. It also can take a while before some z-wave devices are directly supported, meaning you may end up using them as a 'generic' device for a while until they eventually appear as a device that can be added directly…. but in general they will still work. Performance is acceptable - if you have a lot of devices and/or scenes then it could probably be faster/do with more memory. I have the 'Edge' and might upgrade to the Vera Plus when it finally makes it to Australia.

I still get my 'nerd on' by using https://www.mysensors.org/ (via a plugin to the Vera of course) - the base stuff is z-wave and nice and reliable (door locks, lights), and I use the mysensor kit to do less critical stuff (like temperature sensors) more economically.

  • It really annoys me that their rewards points credit cannot be used to purchase discounted products.
As far as I can tell it was not stipulated to be the case at any point over the period in which I spent over $1k to accumulate said points. :(

    • Really? I've done it in the past. You don't have the option when checking out - you need to do it first. Basically click on the box on the far right of the screen that says 'rewards program' and then click on 'spend your points'.

      • My points generated a "voucher" to be used in the coupon/code box of an order. Only one coupon can be applied to an order.
Would love to be proved wrong!

        • Ah. I think I must have used them when items were on sale, with no extra voucher required….. Sorry. As you were!

        • Ahh bugger. Thanks anyway :)

  • +1 for fantastic service from these guys

  • Hi @cshomes
