[Android] Tasker $1.29 (Was $3.49) @ Google Play

1530

Tasker is on sale for 5 days. Rating 4.6 from 41,448 reviews.

Tasker is one of the original and most powerful automation apps on Android. Highly regarded, it has support built in to many apps and there are many 3rd party plug-ins to extend its capabilities. Unfortunately it's also quite difficult to get your head around the scripting process. However you can look up scripts in the Wiki and modify them to your requirements. Google for other online sources of scripts.

      refund it and buy it again

      • How I can refund again? I don't see a refund button like some other apps I've purchased

        • +3

          If within 48hrs, go here and do the steps for opt 2 😊

          @yupyup: woohoo it worked! Thanks!

    • Gah yeah ive been camping a price drop for ages and just bought yesterday after deciding it probs wouldnt happen haha.

    • +4

      I was planning to buy it tonight. Looked on Oz b this yesterday and decided it probably won't go on sale. This $2 saving brings me far more joy than it should.

  • And bought, thanks op!

  • I've switched from iOS to Android and back to iOS and this app is one thing I do miss about Android. This is a great app.

    What's some cool stuff you can do with this app? I've been looking around and haven't seen anything that interests me or Nougat can't already do.

    • +15

      Here's some stuff that I do with it which might give you some inspiration:

      • Open my VPN App and connect to VPN when I disconnect from trusted WiFi
      • Open my VPN App and disconnect the VPN when connected to trusted WiFi
      • Sync any new photos and files to my NextCloud install every 6 hours (If you don't know what Nextcloud is, it's like a self hosted Google Drive)
      • If after 10pm and I plug my phone into AC Power, popup a prompt to confirm if I am going to bed. If confirmed, send a HTTP POST to my Home Assistant installation and turn off all the lights in the house
      • Watch the Sleep As Android App and when an alarm is triggered, HTTP POST to Home Assistant that an alarm has triggered which will turn on my bedside lamp gradually

      There's loads of stuff you can do but it's just about finding inspiration and having a little bit of technical knowledge.

      • Cheers Cozza. The VPN automation sounds good.

  • +1

    Sorry for the noob question but what is this app used for? What can it automate?

    • +6

      If you've got the right appliances and devices, it may be able to cook you breakfast.

      • I see a back to the future scene popping up.

    • almost anything. it uses the phones input and can you can program it to trigger certain apps or settings.

      for example, here is a script (from the site listed above) that automatically turns on wifi when you get home, and then turns it off when you leave so you dont have to manually do it

      I use it to turn on Data and GPS by sending an SMS (ie codewords) and set sound to maximum. If I ever lose my phone I know I can turn on the features I need track it.

      • That's the best use of it I've heard so far. I never leave my GPS and data on when the phone isn't in use.

  • How does it compare against IFTTT in automation?

    • +1

      The triggers for IFTTT are a big limitation and the cloud requirement can be a detractor. But it is easier to use.

      Tasker is extremely powerful but has a steep learning curve which a lot of people can't get past.

    • IFTTT automation is service based, this is based entirely on your phone.

  • Trigger vs Tasker. What do people prefer and why?

  • Good app. I do location-based automation but a lot of functionalities are being locked by Android as time goes.

    • A lot of functionalities are being blocked

      Care to elaborate?

      • +2

        Can't do mobile data, Wifi sleep, Wi-fi tether anymore. They need root priviledges. Running on N 5x.

        • Thanks.

        • I think Location may be another one as well that requires root privileges.

    I guess it's time to buy again to get automatic updates, I bought a license on the website before it hit the play store. :P

  • This is a pain in the ass, get Automagic instead.

  • Does Automagic & Automate control/interact with external devices? (honest question. Never used these apps before)

  • +1

    Bought this app but could not figure out how to use it, then refund.

  • +1

    Seriously the best App I have on my phone for several years. There is a learning curve but can be quite useful.

    • I bought it years ago and have tried and tried and simply never been able to learn how to use it. I work in IT too! Makes me feel very stupid.

  • Thanks OP, bought.

    Anyone know a script to launch Waze after connection to my cars bluetooth?

    • +2

      Create a new "state" profile and browse "Net->BT Connected"

      Set the name to your car bt name.

      For the linked task, select "App -> Launch App" then just select waze.

      That should get you most of the way.

    • Im quite sure you can autolaunch Android Auto when connected to your cars bluetooth, and you should be able to use Waze as your default mapping app. You should be able to do this without the need for Tasker.

  • thanks OP.

    Bought it at full price, never learned how to use it…

  • Bought this last week using rewards money. Finally got around to it today to have a play around with it. A bit of reading involved to set up profiles. Still learning

    I've recently started toying with the idea of switching from apple to android thanks to the excellent google home. I've picked up some android devices but are finding some shortcomings on android that I've become depended on with iOS. I'm wondering if tasker can solve such shortcomings…

    On iOS when my phone rings, so does my iPad. I can also make phone calls from my iPad…it seamlessly and transparently uses the iphone as the conduit. Can an android phone and tablet have such synergy somehow?

    Some other gripes are lack of central and standardised task list, or podcasts. Being used to these as fundamental to my daily use I find it baffling such quality of life utilities are not core, but that's another story.

    • There should be apps to address all your 3 points. Im quite sure I've seen such apps for all three scenarios on the Google Play store.

  • I find MacroDroid better and easier to use.

    Anyone bought Tasker but finding it hard to use, there are some good videos on Youtube to get you started.

    Also, do not start with what others are doing with Tasker. Think about what you do on a routine basis on your phone and you can simply automate it.

    Once you get the hang of it, you can start using plugins and interact with external devices.

    E.g;

    Set media volume to 80% (or 100% or any % you wish) when connected to Bluetooth.

    -> Open Tasker
    -> On the profile tab, Click the "+" at the bottom right
    -> Choose "state"
    -> Choose "BT connected"
    -> Choose the name of the bluetooth connection by clicking "search icon" on name or leave it blank and it will work for all BT connections

    You have created a profile. Now you need to "tell" Tasker what action to take when this profile is triggered.

    When you set your profile and back out, Tasker will give you an option to select a task or you can always go to the task tab and click the "+"

    -> Select new task
    -> Give it a name (optional)
    -> On the action screen, click "+"
    -> Choose "Audio"
    -> Choose "Media volume"
    -> Move the slider
    -> Back until you are on the home screen and close Tasker (In the old versions, Tasker needs to be restarted for a new profile to take effect but in the new version there is "Tick" symbol on the top right to save changes and activate new profile).

    If you get this right, you will be start doing your own automation in no time :)

    Hope it helps!

  • stupid question; i'm looking for something that will set the phone ring tone functionality to vibrate only, whenever there is a calendar appointment, and then set it back to what it was once the appointment ends ie., if I have a meeting at work the phone will go silent/vibrate and when the meeting is over then the phone goes back to normal

    is tasker overkill for this kind of use case?

    thanks in advance!

    • +1

      Check pm. Thanks

  • I have Tasker but find that it will NOT recognise the command to turn my data off when arriving home. It turns on WiFi but data just stays on. Is this something that was changed in Nougat to stop apps like this turning off the data connection? or is it maybe specific to my Samsung Phone? As I find when the Wifi is weak at work I am accidentally using my data plan.

    • I tried and received the following notification;

      "This action requires root since Google prevents apps changing the Mobile data status in Android 6.0+"

  • OP, Many thanks!
