  • These things are awesome.. Great performance.

  • For what it's worth, and for comparison, the cheapest low-end starter package (not individual unit), the RBK30, is $346.40 after discount.

For just under $100 more you can have the best (cheaper than buying the low end model and then finding out later that you'll need another extender, which goes for around $160)

    • Is that you in the photo, you look like you just met Tightarse?

      • LOL I'm not even sure what to make of that comment!

Does anyone else think it's crazy the amount of money that people will spend just to avoid having a sparky run a blue wire?

If you are renting than it might be the only option.

      • Might being the operative term… you can always ask permission from the landlord. I've never been knocked back on something like an additional powerpoint or a couple of data ports…

    • Haha we recently done that and the silly billy drilled right through a power cable and had to come back the next day and spend a while fixing it, was surprised they even came back to be honest, only lost power to 1/2 power points that really wasn't used much so all in all wasn't too bad. Got my Ethernet port done though XD

    • Depends how much it costs to run that blue cable. If you ever move your hardware around you might need them again.

  • This or google WiFi?

    • I got a 3 piece Google Wifi kit to use with my Telstra cable. Has been happy with it. The area is approx 2000sq rectangle with the cable plugin on one corner, since then I have received decent speeds across the area. Peak speed can reach 110Mbps sitting next to the main router and 50Mbps at 20m radius of the "mesh" with several walls attanuation. The app is also fairly handy and ease with setup, ideal for ones with minimal network tech knowledge. Just beware DHCP cannot be turned off and you share information with Google. Got it off Amazon US for ~AUD369 delivered.

      • I'm not too techy what's the advantage /disadvantage of the dhcp issue?

        • By disabling dhcp you can nominate a static LAN IP for each of your devices, which is believed to enhance your network security and help you to identify each device you connect. I don't think it is an issue for most of the home users except you have a top notch hacker neighbour who you are not getting along with…

    • What I don't like about the Google wifi is each satellite only has 2 ethernet ports which is not enough for me. The main one where the internet goes in requires at least 4. The other two I don't need more than one (for now). But since none have more than two, and the internet takes up one of them, it's not a good solution for me.

This is a decent comparison video.

I am going to go the Orbi option I have decided

  • what would you guys suggest for this scenario?

square house, double brick, 2 storey, concrete slab. netgear wifi/router is upstairs in the middle of the house. there's barely any signal downstairs at the corners of the house.
    get a better wifi router?
get one of these mesh systems?
or get some kind of point to point addon?

i had tried extending the current netgear with a xiaomi wifi router but devices would intermittently lose wifi connection

Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite or Pro's mounted to the roof of each level, cabled directly to your switch/router.

      • had feeling this would be the best solution, but was hoping to avoid drilling/threading in cables..

        • +1

You could definitely try Orbi, it's apparently very good.

          Worth a shot!

        • @XeKToReX: for the cost (consumer grade), i should hope so lol :)

      • +1

i don't think he wants / can drill or cable through the cement slab…

  • Guys, question; do netgear make an AC 3000 range extender. I already have the AC 3000 Orbi kit linked but need another to extend an ethernet port. I can only see AC 2200 versions of the extender?

  • I just got the following shipped over from UK after hearing great things from friends: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BT-088269-Whole-Home-Wi-Fi/dp/B01NB…

By the time you take VAT off (this happens at check out) and add express delivery, came to $316.74 delivered in 5 days from UK

Set them up no issue whatsoever (Android app not available in Aus play store so bit of trickery need there) and very happy with the wifi coverage around the house. Can stream from mi boxes placed upstairs/downstairs and full wifi coverage out on the deck.

Here are a few reviews, and of course, you will need to buy uk to aud plug adaptors ($5 each from officeworks)

Probably not quite as good as the Netgear, but for half the price and an additional hub, i'd say i got a bargain. Good Luck

  • I would probably wait for the new firmware before installing these as replacements in your network.

Almost everyone is having issues with the one that is currently automatically downloaded to the Orbi - https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/bd-p/Orbi

The way around the issues is to enable telnet and disable auto update then downgrade back to the previous firmware. Netgear have been aware of the issue and we've been waiting over a month for a new firmware.

FWIW, this unit is absolutely amazing in every way and the performance boost at home has been phenomenal…Just don't update to the latest firmware yet!

  • I bought one a few weeks ago and ended up returning it because I couldn't use my landline with it. I still need the modem supplied by the ISP for that.

I might buy it again if it drops to $300 though.

    • Just ordered 2.

From the readings I have done some people do connect their modem/router to the Orbi router. Reason is their modem/router has more functionality compared to the Orbi. Just turn wifi off on the modem/router and use the Orbi wifi. Best of both worlds.

      • Yeah I know. It's just that I will need 3 devices for the internet (Arris cable modem, ISP router, Orbi). That will take up a lot of space and 3 plugs. I wanted to get rid of the crappy ISP router. It wouldn't be so bad having 3 devices if this thing didn't cost over $400. Hence why I'm waiting for it to drop below $300.

For that price, I kind of wanted more from it.

  • was just about to post this deal, nice one.
i’m going to use it with the uniquiti edgerouter

  • Is everyone getting theirs shipped via Fastway?

    • Yes

      • What a coincidence I get your reply and Fastway delivery guy drives up in a Toyota Camry sedan and delivers it after previous 2 days failed attempts :)

Thanks god at least it was delivered haha
