Bought a Halo a while back on a similar sale. Phenomenal piece of clothing, highly recommend you snap one up at this price!

I might have to buy this one with the hood too now…

Caveat - I'd go a size down from your usual, I'm 182 cm and 80kg, usually wear a medium in most brands but I'm a small in this.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up, I'm 178cm so I was gonna buy a medium. Just a question, are the sleeves really long on this jacket?

      • I have broad shoulders and find the sleeves a little bit too long

      • +1

Nah, I don't find them to be disproportionate to the overall sizing. Fits me well, though maybe I'm a bit lanky.
There are little velcro wrist tighteners which would stop it falling over your hands if you have T-rex arms though :P

Thanks for the advice mate :)

    • Bought one during the last sale and took it to the snow… wonderful piece of kit. Highly recommended.

    • +1

Can confirm that I was a size down than my usual when I tried in store today, thanks for the heads up 😅

    • Im 78kg and 6'2, usually wear a medium. I tried both a Small and Medium on in-store, and noticed no real difference in fit.

I bought the Small because i preferred the colour option, but people similar to our size would likely be fine with either size.

Good price, but doesn't include black.

i've been using my macpac halo for a while, purchased end of last year.

very warm and light, was great in Japan.

I think i'd go for the hooded version though

    • +1

Wish I bought the hooded version. Also second the advice to size down.

  • +1

I don't need another but I am so tempted lol

  • Halo in green or blue only for that price. 3XL in blue and S & M in green only.

    • Yeah "many sizes" is a stretch.

  • No further discount codes?

    • +1

      i tried "Explore"

      Didnt work

  • Are these "thicker" or as "thick" as the Uniqlo down jackets?

    • Filled with 600 loft duck down, not super warm, but for OZ winter in Melb, maybe TAS too?

    • +8

Uniqlo have various different down jackets, of different thickness/warmth. You probably mean their Ultralight Down jackets, which are lightweight packable down jackets - the Halo is much thicker/warmer (more than double the amount of fill from memory).

Ultralight will be much lighter and pack smaller, Halo will be heavier and warmer.

I posted a comparison of specs between Uniqlo Ultralight, MacPac Halo and Kathmandu Heli jackets in the last macpac deal, if you want to look. Basically, Macpac Halo is the warmest, then Kathmandu Heli and Uniqlo Ultralight. (Note: Each brand has jackets in various levels of warmth, so both Kathmandu and Uniqlo have jackets more comparable to the Macpac Halo. These are just the three most popular models that regularly go on sale.)

  • Hi there might be a noob question but am going to the snows for the first time this weekend- would this suffice in lieu of the typical snow gear jacket?

    • No, it's not waterproof. And when down gets wet it loses its ability to keep you warm.

      • Got it, thank you! :)

    • depends what youre doing at the snow?

If you're just sightseeing on a clear day it would be fine. Sightseeing on a wet day you'd need to cover it with a waterproof jacket.

If you're planning to ski or snowboard then, you'd need to wear an external waterproof jacket. The external fabric on the jacket isn't strong enough to support a fall. And as macca says, if it gets wet it's useless.

      • its raining this weekend apparently, so guess i will need more than this :) Thanks again

Bought one during the last sale and it is a quality jacket - highly recommended.

    As a size point, I'm 192cm 90kg and took a medium size.

I preferred the hooded version but couldn't justify the extra $$

    • +6

Are these jackets meant for giants? When a 192cm 90kg man is considered a medium…hobbits like me shouldn't even bother :/

      • +1

Just purchased from the store. 176cm, 72kg. XS fit me perfectly haha

        • is it the same price in store?

  • +2

Mens and womens Tui fleece pullover also has 10% off it's clearance price, now $36. Still a range of colours and sizes available.

  • +1

    Great price.

Got one for myself with hood, read comments around size, called up, got them to change size to one size smaller.

    Great service.

    • Same here. Called them to go one size down from my original order which they accommodated :)

  • Is this available in store?

    • Just called and put aside one at the Qld Valley store for pickup tomorrow.

  • How does this compare to Kathmandu?

    • See my comment above.

Macpac Halo is much thicker and warmer than Kathmandu Heli, which is the one you probably mean.

(I haven't compared the specs, but I would guess that the Halo would be more comparable to the Kathmandu Epiq, but that is more expensive.)

For anyone in Sydney, as of a week ago the Birkenhead Point Macpac outlet had the standard Halo for $90 and $100 for the hooded in various colours and sizes.

    • dang, wondering if I should wait to see if there is stock in store.

    • Photos would be great to try a price match

  • I generally use 52 inches/132 cm jackets as chest size. Will this suite me?

  • I'm headed to Europe in December, so smack bang in the middle of their winter.
Would this be a decent top layer jacket for that?

    • We travelled Europe over December last year travelling light - I stayed warm in a uniqlo heattech, uniqlo ultralight (longer length) and scarf and was warm enough (except maybe Vienna) - good thing with winter travel no long queuing so kept warm walking or being inside. I imagine would be warm enough, however for me, I would want something slightly longer to cover my bottom for warmth.

  • +1

Really good price, however I found their sizing to be a little strange. The medium was far too short in length for me (i'm 6'0 tall for clarification) yet the sleeves were probably an inch longer than i'd like. Going up to the large, which was almost the right length, the sleeves were several inches too long for me.. and despite what it sounds like, I don't have abnormally short arms.

If you find the sizes aren't quite right for you, I can't speak highly enough of the Mountain Designs equivalents. Took one to NZ for ski season and it was fantastic, also much thicker and felt like it was a better quality product.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations on how to wash these?

  • Cheers, grabbed one for me and the missus.

  • With so many people saying how the sizing is out, i thought I would mention I am usually an L or XL in clothing and am happy with an XL. I'm 195cm tall.

  • Purchased for Europe trip in decemeber, thanks. This kind of clothing is crazy expensive. Took advice about sizing, hope it fits!

  • +1

Thanks OP. Finally bit the bullet and bought the hooded version after eyeing one for about a year.
This is the cheapest I've seen it so far (prev $143.99 with the 'explore' discount code).
Now I wish Melbourne will stay cold for a bit longer… :)

    • +1

Hooded has been $125 before, so $112.50 with explore code - same price as this. But yes, this is the equal lowest I've ever seen! :)

(A pity they cancelled the explore code because people were going in store and asking for the discount - it was meant for new online accounts only)

  • How do these compare to the 'Sundowner' macpac jackets?

    • Main differences are that Sundowner has a water resistant coating on the fabric as well as water resistant down (down doesn't keep you warm when it's wet), and it also has more down fill (so it will be warmer).

(Also has other minor features like key clip and headphone port)

  • They made me get a xxl due to my shoulders I never wear it because it is so baggy.

  • +1

Bought one for me and a friend today. Great jacket and a great buy. Perfect timing. Had a look at Kathmandu and their stuff is so much more expensive

    • Did the same - checked out the Halo at a Macpac store to get my sizing right, thendropped in to a Kathmandu shop nearby to compare with what they had…no contest. Kathmandu stuff was craptastic and overpriced.

  • Used the uber version on my trip to nz recently! Kept me warm all the time ! Light weight and easy to pack away !

  • Grabbed one!

  • is it just me, or do they actually seem a little on the light side.

i got a rays outdoors 550 one from a sale a couple years ago $54, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/203808 and find that really thick and warm.

it sadly, doesnt have a hood.

i tried the macpac one on today and was underwhelmed by its thickness, but the hood is nice and it is very packable.

the zipper is probably better on the macpac one, everything else seems the same.

    • 550 is the "fill power" (loft rating) not the fill weight (how much down there is). If you mean light in weight, you should be comparing the fill weight, as well as the weight of the fabric.

If you mean light in warmth, it's a combination of fill power and fill weight.

Do you have the specs of the rays jacket? Could be that the rays one has a higher fill weight.

      • nah no idea, the website product page is long gone. even wayback machine doesnt have it.

the rays outdoors one i have is much more like the more expensive macpac model. basically the same, zip is a bit better.

i think i might get this anyway cos it has a hood, and is more packable. but i wouldnt expect it to be useful at subzero temps.

  • For those that ordered, can you please do me a favour and check your invoice whether GST was included in the price?

    • 'Includes GST where applicable' per my invoice

      • Thanks Dadidalol

  • Copped a hooded one in Small, thanks!

  • Grabbed a hooded XS in blue after trying on in store, a size smaller than I usually go. Received it a few days ago. It has long arms - I've been wearing it with the wrists folded under which is annoying when putting it on, but it stays put and is comfortable. This is warmer than my Outdoor Research Transcendent down jacket, which has higher fill power but significantly less fill weight.
