pros - great phone, fantastic specs, fantastic camera, great screen, super quick

cons - bloatware, Leeco spam (not harmful), not even 1 OTA update, no firmware update whatsoever

but for 130 - absolute bargain

extremely tempting. my lenovo K3 note is starting to grind to a halt with every day usage.

    • Yes but you need the app to obtain the coupon.

      • Yes, the $5 coupon.

The Leeco developers have probably been laid off, which is why there are no more OTA updates for the phone. Leeco has had their assets frozen by the shanghai court and their former CEO Jia Yueting is pretty much on the run.

  • Wow! Worth it for a backup phone? Surely you could put nova launcher on it?

Not fussed by lack of OTA/updates if there's reasonable custom ROM support/mod community?

    • +1

There doesn't seem to be a very active community - I bought a LeEco Le1 Pro and it came with malware installed, forced me to root and install a cyanogen mod; even then, the phone would absolutely cook (too hot to hold) when pushed (like, 1080p video or pokemon go).

I wouldn't trust them again, but ymmv, it's superficially nice for the price.

    • custom rom support is critical. So many chinese phones with good specs on paper come with rubbish software.

  • 2nd hand LG G3 is a better option.

    • +2

Not really, LG G3, G4 all have reliability issues after 1-2 years of use.

      • -1

That's G4 and V10. G3 only has the minor side crack issue. I have used three G3 before, all had the hairline crack through the microphone edge side. The phone itself is great.

        • +1

I had LG G3 that bootlooped on me. Would not recommend it.

        • @gadget guy:
Have you tried to replace the battery. It's normally the old battery issue for G3.

        • The biggest problem of G3 is having flickering and black screen after 1-2 years of usage. It's their CPU design flaw.

    • The cpu is not in the same league as this.

  • Can someone please suggest which phone less than $150 Aud comparable for this phone or Xiaomi ?

    • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-4
      Or Redmi Note 4x https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-4x

However, the Snapdragon 625 found in the phones above are slower than the Helio X20.

But you should not notice the difference in everyday usage.

      • Thanks, Mate. Will wait for the price to come down

      • helio x20 also has a mali T880 mp4 GPU, with 106 GFLOPS - should be enough for its 1080p HD display.

There seems a few different models in the links you gave, one also has an x20. The only GPU I saw listed was an Adreno 505, which only has 48.6 GFLOPS.

        • The first one is Note 4X "Pro" which has more RAM and Mediatek Helio CPU

notice it costs a lot more than the others.

          There's a 625 variant.

this one, with SD435, is actually tagged wrongly. It is a 5 inch smaller variant, just called the Redmi 4x (not called Note). It is the most budget one of the 4x family.

        • @scrimshaw: the x20 version is only around $25 more

      • all 3 of these great options

        • Which one is capturing the best photo ?

        • @yht: Can't help you with that, sorry not something i care about so I have no Knowledge on that. Anyone else???

        • +2

          @yht:

GSM arena usually has some sample shots. But they only do it for well known devices.

Also check FLickr and use search by device. For example, this search will show photos taken with a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x and this for Redmi Note 3 good luck.

        • @scrimshaw: The 4X pics are great.. and from a <$200 phone.

    • Yes, Lenovo Zuk1 on Aliexpress is going for $125 USD shipped.

      • Unfortunately the camera rated bad though.

the company has now changed owner as the original founder went on the run in US A….
the phone business is likely be sold or discontinued. one wonders who want to buy the assets given they have owe millions to the manufacturer.

The compare to other hundred dollar phone, this device is good enough as the original software is better fine tuned then likes of blackview, just dont expect software support.

there is also NO third party ROM for the devices what so ever….

  • Got this last week. Really bang for buck. Works great with the new 5.9 firmware. Easily rooted too. Seriously rivals $500 phones. Not much bloatware either.
