Lenovo Tab P12 Tablet with Pen $349 @ ALDI

800

Part of their upcoming special buys.

A solid all round large 12.7" tablet.

Yes you can get the Xiaoxin version from Ali with some upgrades and hope for the best. But if you are ok with 60hz and want local warranty with 60 days to change your mind, $349 isn't too bad? I picked one up a few month back 2nd hand and it's been great for browsing/reading/YouTube/game streaming. Just got Android 15 as well. This also works pretty reasonably as a drawing tablet and whilst some may scoff at 60hz for this purpose, the pen is surprisingly smooth and responsive even on top of tempered glass. Tablet however is extremely slippery without a case and its large size is certainly not for everyone. Also, it's only USB C 2.0 so no video out. But when the screen is this huge, it’s not a deal breaker.

Resolution: 2944 x 1840 for crystal-clear visuals
MediaTek Dimensity 7050
8GB memory & 128GB storage for seamless performance
Wi-Fi 6
Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3
Quad JBL® speakers with Dolby Atmos® for immersive sound
Includes Lenovo Tab Pen for enhanced creativity and precision

    What's the Bunnings equivalent?

  • +7

Thanks OP. I don't want to deal with custom ROMs, hacking the matrix and all that mumbo jumbo.

    • I did that with my P11. Now it doesn't do OTA updates. Not sure what to do with that, but I also can't justify spending over $300 for a new tablet. 😢

      • +2

$350 for a huge tablet is worth it.

        • +3

          Shhhhhh… don't tempt me.

        • -2

Since when did a 12.7" screen in a tablet become huge ?

      • Flash back to original factory ROM.

        • +2

Ah! And here's the problem I have. Some person is hosting the ROM in some Google Drive. I don't trust it enough. If I ever want to sell it, I'll do that.

Right now, it's fine as long as I keep telling it to not install the latest update when I reboot.

It's the OTA update that tells me it's not compatible.

I guess I mistyped it up there. OTA works, but the OTA update version is incompatible with my official global ROM. The global ROM was installed via the official Lenovo app from their website. Windows app.

Anyway. Long story. I'm not explaining it right. But basically, I too agree to not mess around with changing ROMs. Pay a bit more, get tablets from reputable stores with the original software installed.

          • @BadGiraffe: If you haven't gone through the process of unlocking the bootloader on your device which it sounds like you haven't then your tablet will only accept valid firmware images signed by Lenovo so you can safely trust the Google Drive link, if it's been modified the device will refuse to install it.

    • it's definitely worth hacking the matrix

    • +2

You don't need to with Xiaoxin either 😝

    • +3

Used to be that guy too, just can't be (profanity) with it all anymore. Give me something that works.

Even using google camera is too much effort now lol

      • -7

Get an iPad if you want something that just works.

        • +2

… for a little while (till its planned obsolescence hits, Apple stops updating the OS, newer apps can't be installed, and Apple makes it impossible to install legacy versions for no good reason).

        • or any android tablet that does what i want out of the box, either would be fine.

Just referring to not taking a chinese model and messing around with it.

    • +1

Custom roms are for when the device manufacturer gives up on support and that's the only way you're going to get any updates in future.

It takes a lot for me to throw perfectly good hardware into the bin.

      • Custom roms are great and I used my previous phone for a little over 5yrs (OnePlus 5T) and the one before that for 5yrs too (OnePlus One) thanks to LineageOS. I seem to get pretty lucky with the phone lifetime, I try to buy one with good specs so it doesn't feel slow after a few years.

That being said if the tablet is probably for media consumption unlocking the bootloader will kill the L1 certification so you lose picture quality for the streaming services and are stuck at 480p.

  • ThanksOP! How’s the speed? Did you notice any sluggishness at any point during use?
Since it's got 8GB of ram only.

    • +2

It’s not iPad smooth but it’s certainly not sluggish. Little bit of choppiness in transitions from time to time, but doesn’t break the experience for the most part.

      iPad Mini

Er, this deal is for a 12.7" tablet 🤷‍♂️

    • +4

Probably better comparing to the 11” iPad 2025 on sale for $470 last week. But this is still another 1.7” for those that need as much real estate as possible.

    • +6

Where was there a iPad mini 7 for $350?

    • When is the new iPad Mini ever close to $350

  • Silly question… does it do Netflix at 4K? Or at least more than 1080p? This one is 2 or 3K.

Because of the region lock or whatever.

    • +4

This is a 3K screen. Supports up to 1080p Netflix (Widevine L1).

      • That's good to know. Thanks!

        • +4

You can steam 4K YouTube and at higher bitrate (if you have Premium).

    • Can you really see 4K on a 12.7" screen? I can't see 1080p on my phone screen, which is only 30% smaller on its longest side.

      • Not sure. My monitor is only 1080p, but when I play YouTube in 4K it seems clearer.

        Could also be psychological maybe.

        • +1

I can definitely see the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 10" Lenovo Tab M10 3rd Gen, but not on my phone. I doubt I'd see 4K on a 13" screen.

  • Is the included pen one that charges with usb c, has palm rejection and is pressure sensitive? Anyone knows?

    • +4

Yea to all of that. Palm rejection works great (I only use Sketchbook).

      • Question. I have the xiaoxin pad and it senses my palm if the palm lands on the screen before the pen tip. Is palm rejection just app based or can I disable palm recognition when the pen is active?

        • There are settings that you can tweak to let you use finger as well at same time and there is a button on the pen that brings up a little side menu that lets you do some cool pen only features. My favourite is image snipping. But for drawing on sketchbook and taking notes, I’ve not had any palm rejection issues.

  • +2

Anyone know how this would go with Oldschool Runescape?

  • -2

LTE and would have been a sale

    • +5

Not gonna happen. Do you really need it when hotspot is a thing?

    • +1

Don't know why the negs but I to prefer Sim option

  • If only it get to 300 :(

  • +1

Would be interested to see how this performs against the Samsung S10FE for a similar price.

    • Also curious

    • +1

      10.9" vs 12.7"

  • Can I use this as a wireless display with windows 11?

    • +5

Yes, has an app called SmartConnect but you can download Super Display which is arguably the best one for that purpose.

  • +3

Excellent screen size. You will not get a ipad with the size screen at this.
However, I experienced a couple of silly bugs that frustrate the hell out of me.
    1. If you enable developer mode and subsequently disable it, the Bluetooth headphone will not work. Solution : full reset.
    2. If you run "preview" app in MACOS, your "android file transfer" will not work. Solution: close "preview" app in MACOS.

  • +5

I bought one of these a while ago purely for reading comics and it does a hell of a job. Huge two-page spreads. Love it.

    • My Samsung Tab S2 is still going strong for this purpose. Only "issue" I have is the pedantic micro USB charging port and the extremely slow charge compared to modern devices. Lasts ages though in airplane mode to read all those Humble Bundle comics I keep buying.

  • +1

Perfect for wall mounted Home Assistant Dashboard.

    • Quite a big budget for a dashboard.

      • -1

        What do you suggest instead?

  • -3

Compare Apple iPad (2025) Lenovo Tab P12 and P12 Pro
    https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone2=12443&idPhon…

    • +3

Apple will always come out ahead. But this is mainly for those that want a massive screen at a reasonable price.

      • +1

        Yes, apples and oranges there.

Lenovo have proven a solid option over the years. I've bought my daughter 2, I own Lenovo laptops. Never the best of the best but good enough for the rest ;)

        • +1

Apple tablets vs Lenovo tablets is what I meant specifically. Lenovo as a brand is fantastic. Good experience with their laptops over the years.

          • @EitherWayUp: Whoops I wasn't very clear there. I've bought my daughter 2 Lenovo tablets. In addition, I also own Lenovo laptops. But yes their tablets have been great. One only died because my teenage daughter threw a tantrum one day. Until then, working like the day we bought it. Never slowed down etc.

      • Yes if the extra large screen is a must.
Likely the iPad 2025 might be sold for around $400 to $430 range for the EOFY sale so the price premium is less of an issue for most

        • Apple hardware is sure always premium, but Apple euthanises it with planned obsolescence.

  • +1

just get xiaoxin pad from aliexpress better all around and cheaper

    • It's approx the same price. The xiaoxin pad has the newer/better processor but doesn't come with a stylus pen, no Aussie charger, poor/no warranty. The Tab Pro is the best option (essentially the Aussie xiaoxin pad) with stylus pen, Aussie charger and warranty, but costs more, currently $499 but has been $429 on sale.

      • +1

Username "Clear" might be able to chime in here on how this compares with overseas stock currently?

      • Why are you comparing to a different model (Pad Pro)? I got the Xiaoxin Pad Plus for $255, I think it was $280 with pen. Came with P12 firmware, I just got Android 15 OTA.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/lenovo-tab-p12

        • Apologies I thought the Xiaoxin Pad Plus was an 11.5" screen.
Was trying to compare apples with apples - i.e. 12.7" tablets by Lenovo.
With the current prices (almost identical) the Aldi P12 is the better buy.

          • @sinners007: Agree. This is more of a cautionary note for the impulse buyers that it's possible to get for less if you wait for another sale.

The other difference is this has a glossy screen vs matte

          • @sinners007: Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2025 is a much better tablet if you want to use it for media. Has a 600 nit brightness screen compared to P12 400 nits. Xiaoxin also supports HDR and Dolby Vision

  • Why not wait for the Google Pixel Tablet discount? Same price but supported by Google.

    • Whens that due?

    • Is supported by Google really a good thing? They drop support all the time or just kill off lines (see the killed by Google site).

      • Well, yea it still is. First to Android software updates and stock google android.

        • Is stock always better. I've grown accustomed to the extra functionalities in Xiaomi's miui, and miss them on Lenovo's.

          • @wisdomtooth:

I've grown accustomed to the extra functionalities in Xiaomi's miui, and miss them on Lenovo's.

              • gallery app with filters
              • 3-finger screenshot
    • You answered your own question.

    • Just don't go looking for the dock. I got my tablet for dirty cheap Sadler last year, pretty bloody good

    • What is the screen size?

  • Can you put lineageos on this?

  • How does this compare to the Samsung tab A8? Is it worth the upgrade ? I’m looking for a better resolution screen

    • The A8 is ancient. Time to upgrade.

  • Have never claimed any warranty from Aldi on electronics how easy is it?

    • +1

      Pretty much no questions

    • +2

Tried it before for their house brand Bauhn TV. After 60 days and during warranty they refer you to the manufacturer or importer for recourse and they dont bother to replace or repair, just refund. After warranty period you need to threaten them with Fair Trading.

  • +1

Not for everyone, but I've found a cheap second-hand Chrome OS tablet fulfills my tablet needs. It has a full Chrome web browser experience, and it can run light games like Balatro flawlessly. It is a 2022 Duet 3, and I paid $100.

  • this or a Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE, they look very same.

  • Is this the model with matte screen?

    • No

      • Nice, I prefer the glass/glossy version more. Thanks.

  • +1

Does the bluetooth on this allow 2x head phones to be connected and used at once? Would be a perfect tablet size to play movies for the kids while travelling.

When is Lenovo ever going to release OLED tablets again?? 😭

  • Have Lenovo fixed the problem with their screens breaking 'ALL THE TIME"!
