This appears to be the core I5 version

  • Are there any good alternatives to the surface at a cheaper price? The performance isn't a big deal as it will just be for note taking at lectures so I wouldn't think I need even an i5, but the handwriting input must be good.

    • Hp Spectre? and I think samsung has something too.. they might seem similarly priced, but keep in mind that they come with keyboards which is generally $200 ish more.

Try this Lenovo version of Surface for $655
At the moment there is 10% off Kogan gift cards + if you have a $30 spend over $100 that's also good.
      Basically getting it for $560.

laptops are often more convenient for notes IMO.

      • My gf specifically wants it to have pen input

        • They did have the m3 on sale for $80 USD less, but was only for a few days.
I grabbed one of these, with a keyboard was around $1010 all up including 2 shipments (they add duty if the total is over $1000, so easier to buy separately). you get a lot of machine for this price, but understand that cheaper is tempting. Consider the resale value as well, if you do sell in 1 or 2 years, she will prob still get most of her money back.

Could go into Apple store and try out iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. Its a good benchmark for what an accurate pencil on tablet should be like. She might not like it as much as she thinks. She could just keep pen and paper notes and just scan them into her device, and throw away the hard copy.

I find that 2 in 1's are great for uni - readings you can do in tablet mode; lectures you can watch in stand/tent mode and notes you can type in laptop mode

    • A cheap iPad Air will do fine with taking notes at a lecture. Even a pen and paper still work these days ($0.50 for the paper(200 sheets), $0.10 for the pen)

iPad is crap for doing notes.. no keyboard

    • I am using Cube mix plus. Latest m3-7y30 with 4g ram and 128g rom. Including keyboard and pen cost me around 530 dollars on Gearbest. But it is not as good looking as SP or even Lenovo.

  • Would someone recommend a Surface Pro 2 or 3 with an i5 even if they are old or are they too old to consider buying?

    • reviews often note the 4 is improved in small yet good ways, making the 4 a lot more competent than the previous models. this is a good price, the M3 version was briefly another 80 us cheaper.

Ive had sp2, sp3 and sp4. Dont bother with a 2 its way heavier and thicker. There is not a lot of difference between 3 and 4 but the biggest difference for me is the 3 was a LOT hotter than the 4. If you use it on a desk all the time thats fine, but if you want to use it on your lap frequently i would definitely recommend the extra money for a 4 over a 3

    • I would be worried about how good the battery is considering how old the 2 & 3 are. These don't have user readily batteries like a standard notebook.

I got the sp3 i7. The only issue I've had is with the camera. I didn't realise until after I bought it that it's a fixed focus lens. Can't take photos of books / notes etc with it as all the text jusf comes out blurry. The focus has been set for long distance, so taking photos of a PowerPoint presentation or whiteboard or something similar.

      • Beats what I have at the moment, I normally just take photos with my phone anyway :)

        • Yup. It's what I do now too. Generally just have my phone connected to it, so I take a photo, then transfer it across to write on. Bit painful, so I only do it if it's really important.

        • @Name: haven't even realised that whole avenue of studying, writing on written notes / textbooks on surface. You could do it with the board/slides at least!

If only it was the 256gb

    • You can stick a microsd card in them. Add as much storage as you want.

      • Can't do that with ram though

        • +1

Why would you want 256Gb RAM?

        • @Jackson:

          Why wouldn't you?

Not sure if srs. The 256gb hdd version comes with 8gb of ram

@89tnp: it's all making sense now. I didn't put the two together. I thought your original complaint was just about storage space.

  • International warranty?

  • FYI can currently get Used Surface Pro 4 - 128gb i5 4gb Ram US565.55 (~713 AUD)

    • What's your point ??

      • I'm just saying another option for consumers through Amazon geez no need to take it to heart. I just purchased a used one myself :)
