But the peanut butters are only down to $4 :(

i read 'macgyver' and was happy for a split second. Good price for the spread as well.

    • +1

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I read MacGyver spread!

    • +6

In one episode MacGyver made this spread from nothing but a basket of toasted sesame seeds and a rock.

  • So that's just regular tahini, I'm guessing? The word "spread" has thrown me but it says only made from seasame seeds. Great value. Time to stock up on a rarely reduced item.

  • +2

What's the difference (in taste, nutritional value, etc.) between hulled and unhulled tahini please? And how do I eat it, just straight onto toast is okay?
Found the answer if anyone else wants to know:

Best to drink it like a smoothie.

      • +3

I ended up buying one jar of each (all 5 varieties in OP) to try out so I know which one I like for the next time it's on sale lol

        • That's exactly what you were incentivised to do.

There is nothing wrong with dietary fat, especially that which comes from natural sources such as nuts.

      • +2

Versus unnatural fat such as crude oil?

        • Nonsense! Crude oil is unrefined and straight from source, that's as natural as you can get!

          Seriously tho: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalistic_fallacy

        • +2

Versus unnatural fat such as hydrogenated oils loaded with transfat?

I usually ridicule people for drawing arbitrary distinctions between natural/synthetic but this is one case where the man-made version is terrible for you.

      • … especially that which comes from natural sources such as nuts.

Butchered cows and pigs are also natural sources.

    • +3

Peanut butter is also half fat

      • +1

        I suppose so…
        Peanut butter: 49.3%
        Tahini (unhulled): 58.5%

Peanuts are heavily comprised of oils, both oleic acid and linoleic acid, which are both "unsaturated fats".
The same applies for basically any seed/nut, they're rich in unsaturated fats.

When you eat omega 3 which has many health benefits - the omega 3 itself is a type of unsaturated fat.

And that olive oil, while relatively healthy to use when cooking etc, is considered a fat?

          Not all fats =\= Bad

    • It's mostly unsaturated fat, with a leser amount of saturated fat, and a very small quantity of trans fat (similar general ratios to peanut butter). Unsaturated fat is generally considered beneficial to consume, see: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you…

      • small quantity of trans fat (similar general ratios to peanut butter)

Peanut butter doesn't have trans fat, at least none I buy.

        • +1

          It probably does. In Australia/NZ:

Manufacturers are not required to declare TFAs on the label, although they can provide this information voluntarily. However, TFAs must be declared on a label if the manufacturer makes a nutrition content claim about cholesterol or saturated, trans, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, omega-3, omega-6 or omega-9 fatty acids.[1]

That makes it entirely possible to have trans fat in the product and you as the person buying it wouldn't be able to tell based purely on the label. Kraft peanut butter also contains a small quantity of trans fat, although they do at least list that on the label (<0.1g per 100g).

In previous peanut butter threads I've seen people saying they like to buy Pic's peanut butter because it doesn't contain trans fat. The problem with that position is that it does contain trans fat, and this may be reflected on the label sometime in the future.

Wasn't she on Big Brother once?

I wonder why they didn't put it in the catalogue?

Last time they were on offer I gave the 'Cacao Super Spread' a try to find a healthy replacement for Nutella. Can't recommend at all - awful taste and consissteny in mouth. Had to use the whole glass making some sort of cake based on one of their online recipes. Still tempted to give their natural peanut butter a try though.

    • +2

Can recommend their natty peanut butter. Tastes awesome. Unlike their cacao spread haha.

    • Have to agree about the Cacao spread, even without expecting it to be anything like Nutella. However, the regular Super Spread gets a thumbs up from me as an alternative to peanut butter.

    • Did as you did, the cacao spread is pretty difficult to get used to (back to regular peanut butter for me yum yum). When one has 9g/100g sugar and the other has 57g/100g sugar, it's easy to understand why they're so different.

There'll probably never be a healthy replacement for Nutella :(

    • I've tried a load of peanut butters over the past year, and Mayvers's Dark Roasted Crunchy is my pick of the bunch. I agree their Cacao Super Spread is dreadful, but have you tried the Purely Nutz range? Their Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt is like crack - I eat it by the spoonful. Also bought the Hot Chilli & Paprika, but after a taste realised I have no idea what to actually do with the stuff… maybe use it in some kind of satay concoction?

    • I didn't try it on toast. I mixed it with greek yoghurt and it was just amazing. Will definitely be getting more.

  • Cacao peanut butter spread vs nutella?

    • +2

Very different taste. Both delicious. One of course healthier than the other. The Mayver's one still tastes like peanut butter mostly. It's as if you're drinking hot, unsweetened cocoa at the same time. Nutella's only a sweet treat, imo.

      • +1

Nutella is also hazelnut flavoured which is very different from peanut. But yeah also the sweetness factor. Totally different tastes.

        • Ohhhh right i read cacao as cocoa lollll

  • THanks for posting this, was going to go to coles after work today, might try the cacao anyway since it's on sale

  • Thanks for posting . Got the Recipe book for the vegetarian stuff.

  • How's the peanut and coconut as a peanut butter substitute?

    • +1

Your question has given me a headache. What kind of answer are you expecting?

      • Does it taste good? Does the coconut ruin it?

  • Got excited for the peanut butter than realized…
