    It's 3lbs not 4lbs

    • Thanks! Updated.

    • +4

      1.36kg

  • Is it good for editing, photos, videos ..

    • +4

With a i5-7Y54, I'd quite comfortably say no.

It's more for mobility, uni work, to and from the office etc.

Can be used for light editing.

      • thanks

        • +2

Just to add that i have an older gen m3 6y30 which is about 10% slower than this i5 and i can edit and make films in Adobe Premiere at 1080p with no issue.

4k is out with this machine by far.

          @adrianhughes1998: thanks for information

its no desktop level powerhouse its still very capable for editing all of those things.

I think people are underestimating how far CPUs have come in the last 5 years. this 2 core 4 thread cpu would be on par with a good quad core 4 years ago, which was perfectly capable for video/photo editing back then. could say its faster since most people now use SSDs/flash technology.

Any problems with getting a laptop from Amazon. I'm thinking of getting one from there.
Things like: warranty, au plugs or adapted voltage, shipping problems?

    • +2

I've had no problems. I rank Amazon one of if not the highest reputation for online stores. My DOA warranty was dealt with super quick and they even credited me $77 for postage back to them.

    • +3

I've found amazon great with issues in the past.

Bought a zenbook off amazon about 5 months ago. Currently in with ASUS Australia as an international warranty repair. So far no issues (apart from motherboard issues). I had to pay for shipping to ASUS in Sydney ($11) that would have been free if locally purchased machine. ASUS service received yesterday, rang me this morning wanting to wipe it to test it with factory settings (I'd already done that - so no probs there for me). I'm expecting a replacement machine or a new motherboard replacement. Hopefully that will happen, all signs so far are good.

      • Wow that's a good news story - we have other members in the past who've had different experiences though. Which zenbook did you buy?

        • +2

The one "get-innocuous" recommends bellow. The ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54. Which I'd also recommend apart from having motherboard issues with-in 5 months.

          Haven't had it repaired/replaced yet.
When I initially rang I'd already done a factory reset so they asked me to send it in without any more questions.
Told them it was from Amazon US and they said it was still covered by their international warranty.
Haven't heard back since they were doing their own factory reset yesterday, so maybe it's wishful thinking that it will all go smoothly - phone tech seemed relaxed about it. I was/am a bit worried that the international warranty wasn't going to work well.

        • @chevson: yeah im looking at getting that model from Amazon US as well, only concern is around motherboard issues and whether Asus Australia will repair it locally if there's any troubles. I've heard different regions have different motherboards so there might be servicing issues.

Let me know how you go with them please! If they repair it under the international warranty then I'll definitely buy it!

        • @chevson: I bought an Asus laptop from Amazon 5 years ago. Had a couple of issues but have had no problem getting it repaired locally. When it was under warranty they wouldn't provide a courier to pick it up because it was purchased overseas - I had to drop it off - but it was repaired on the spot at no cost to me.

        • @chevson: Just to add further to this - I've just received a reply from Asus on the Amazon Q&A page for the Zenbook UX330UA regarding warranty specifically for Australia:

          https://www.amazon.com/forum/-/Tx3FHK56W0SR323/1?source&asin…

'Hey Gareth Lee, yes the international warranty would be valid in Australia.'

Which gives me some peace of mind especially since I've already bought it!

          @chevson:
Just got an update from ASUS australia repair centre. They have replaced the motherboard and are sending it back this afternoon.
All up no real issues calling on the international warranty from my ASUS zenbook bough from amazon. Had to factory reset it (to prove it was a motherboard issue), I had to pay for postage to them ($11, wouldn't have to if local purchase), australia post sent it via a different state (not ASUS's fault), repair then took over a week - they diagnosed it on the first day - so wondering if then had to have a part shipped in. A little slow being my only issue.

        • +1

@chevson: just to complete this. Amazon US purchased ASUS UX330UAK repair received back today. They replaced the motherboard and IO board. Computer factory reset. Overall I don't think I can complain too much about using the international warranty service in the case. Slow and could have had better communication about the progress of the repair, but they weren't difficult to deal with and didn't put any barrier up to doing the repair.

Unless the touch screen is essential to you I would strongly consider spending the extra $50 on this model.

Smaller SSD but thinner, lighter, faster CPU and better battery life (despite the higher wattage CPU). Looks like better build quality too, though I haven't seen the flip in person.

    • Good recommendation: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7Y54-vs-I…

If you can wait 6 or so months, I would hold of and wait.
8th Gen Intel CPU chip sets have just been announced and Intel has finally released chips with a considerable performance advance over their predecessors in response to Ryzen.

      • announced chips can take a while to get deployed and longer to be available in well priced / discounted models.

    • if you pay in USD only works out to be $30au more

Everyone this is not an i5, it's more like an M3. Don't get fooled. Deal is still decent.

    • +3

Correct. From benchmarks it still turbos like someone on Viagra so it is still decent for fast bursts.

    • +1

Agreed. Y series processor is basically a rebranded M processor due to the poor reputation of the latter. So no more M5 and M7 processors. They are now referred to as i5-xYxx and i7-xYxx. Y series processors tend to have about half the base frequency of their counterparts.

      • +1

I like mine cos it's fanless. I deal with 1080p 120fps a lot of time and with colour grading and some effects the export time goes up, but not detrimentally. I can still export a 45 Min video in 2.5hrs which is ok considering integrated GPU and that it's 4.5W TDP

        • +1

Yeah the Y series should be great for battery life given their low TDP which is less than a third of the TDP of U series usually found in laptops and ultrabooks.

Fanless is a plus too. However, lately there have been fanless devices with an i5 U series in them.

@Harshad: somehow I'll find an excuse to upgrade every year cos why not HAHAHAHHAHAHAhaahahh

  • Price good, but also want AU plug and the bigger screen. The 14" version of Zenbook on ebay with 20% off for $1180 which isn't too bad. $1300+ seems to be usual AU price (give or take). Although Futu/Shopping Exp doing the usual ebay jack up, on their website for $1299 but $1475 on ebay store.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX430UA-14-FHD-Intel…

EDIT: also has i5-7200U processor (2.5Ghz)

    • +1

i bought one of the 14" zenbooks i5 256GB ssd from computer aliance in the ebay deal - very happy with it. Drive size is fine for my requirements and the screen is very nice

  • I'd be all over this if I hadn't picked up a Dell Inspiron 7000 a few months ago. Looks like a excellent deal for a nice portable machine.

  • How would a Macbook air compare to this?

    • +4

This has slightly higher Res screen and is touchscreen.
The Air has a proper i5 so Air's processor is significantly more powerful.
The 512GB Air costs $2099 before any discounts.
      Air has backlit keyboard.
Air has thunderbolt while the Zen has usb-c and micro hdmi.

      • Ah cheers for that- its a close call

  • +1

Can this drive a 4K monitor at 60hz via usb-c or mini HDMI ?

    • Finding a laptop that will do this, as well as have dedicated GPU is hard for under $1200.

    • yes it can through hdmi not sure about usb-c

  • +3

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i5-7Y54-Notebook-Pr…

According to the benchmarks on this, the rebranded i5-7Y54 (was M5 previously) is <5% off the i5-7200U across the board. It effectively benches the same as the Ivy Bridge i7's back in the day, which is still a respectable processor. It uses substantially less Wattage compared to the "full" i5 (4.5W vs 15W) so this is much better for battery life etc.

I'm running the lower grade M3-7Y30 as I type and its fantastic without the need for active cooling and lasts me a full work day (9 hours) on battery with about a dozen tabs and windows opened.

  • Does anyone know when this deal / price will last until?

  • Is the SSD replaceable? Standard Sata or M2?

  • Views compared to this? This one's got an i7 cpu

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX330UA-13-3-FHD-Int…

    • Why are people negging? He has literally asked for other people's insight/views compared to another PC.

Sorry, I can't comment on the difference in the processors but i7 for an extra $600? I'm not sure its worth it… depends if you need touchscreen and have good cloud storage (smaller SSD on the one you linked).

      • +1

        Hmm yea not sure.

But this one on ebay works out to be ~1050 after 20% off ebay discount, 10% GST back (if you're travelling) and 1% cashrewards. So it's only ~$200 on a newer model and more powerful CPU, but smaller SSD.

Did you guys see the comments? It can't work properly in tablet mode! When you flip the keyboard the keyboard still works! You should press the 1 star rating to see what they say! The good comments were old. New comments are all negative. None said a good word.

  • +1

How does this compare to Xiaomi Air 13 with i5-6200u from places like GearBest etc? What are people's thoughts?

  • I bought this via a visa card on Amazon and incurred a 3% fee (circa A$30) that neither my bank (NAB), Amazon nor Visa are prepared to take responsibility for and repay. Beware of this risk if considering.
