lol.. You forgot to mention the phone is $1499 on Preorder + Postage (at least from JB). Not to mention every other place gives better freebies (US to give the Gear 360 Gen 2 and Europe/Asia to give the DEX Dock).

    • +3

I will wait for it to drop below $800… Maybe 2 months after release?

      • +1

LG devices maybe. Samsung devices tend to hold their prices a bit longer. The S8+ have only just started to nudge around or just below the $800 mark for grey imports.

    • Doesn't one of them also get a 256GB MicroSD card?

      • +1

I think some countries are giving a choice between a 256gb card or charger. Either case, still infinitely better than a crappy wireless charger worth 40 bucks on eBay. Samsung Australia has to be the biggest tight arses out.

        • +1

The US gets a choice of the Gear 360 camera, or the Wireless Fast Charging Pad AND the 256GB MicroSD card. Both are way better than screen cover for 12 months and the pad.

          http://www.techradar.com/news/samsung-galaxy-note-8-deals-in…

EU gets the DEX-Dock, which is also more handy and valuable than the pad.

$1500 is a lot to spend on a phone where its predecessor caught fire and was recalled in my opinion.
Even if we take the Note 7's too hot to handle aspect out of the equation.

$1500 for basically a tablet which can do phone calls. Or you can get a reasonable size phone for 10% of that price.

How about the upcoming iPhone 8 rumoured to be priced up to near $2000?

      • -1

iPhones are a better value wrt resale. You make up the difference in the long run when you go to sell it privately.

        • +2

Not much better value in reselling iPhones now. I bought my iPhone 6 64GB in late 2014 outright for over $1100. You can see on OB you can now buy new iPhone 6 32GB for $449, which means if I want to sell mine as second-hand now, I will expect it to be under $400. $700 depreciation in under 3 years is quite a lot.

        • -2

          @edfoo: Solution? Don't buy a 64gb iPhone 6 in late 2014!

Seriously its common sense - the more something costs the more it will depreciate.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: In 2014, it only came with 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models. 16GB is too small for me and 128GB is too big. 32GB model wasn't available at that time until a year or so later.

        • -1

@edfoo: Still, if you wanted an iPhone 6 in 2014 you had to cough up big bucks. Now in 2017 you don't, because its 3 years old. If you have a cheaper phone, it can't depreciate as much. Eg if you were going to buy an iPhone 6 now (equivalent to buying 4s in 2014), it won't depreciate as much as it is older.

Most depreciation happens in the first year.

      • Oh I just disregarded that pricing as a troll :P

And although I'm certainly not an iPhone guy they have a better track record for sales/resales..

        • That near $2000 pricing can be real, we will know next month from Apple's official announcement. Does that mean a troll is real too? :p

        • @edfoo: Well yes a troll can be real, because you can't disprove something simply because you haven't seen it yet xD

        • +2

@pennypincher98: True, just like aliens. I have not met one but I believe they are out there.

Any good deals for a mortgage to pay it off?

  • +1

For $1,499.00 I would expect a free wireless charger, screen protector and case…

    • -1

You get a free screen repair, not a screen protector. They run around $500-600 for the latest samsungs.

      • +1

Actually if memory serves its around the $230 mark for a screen repair by Samsung themselves.

        • I take it back then. I'm only going off anecdotal evidence which was much more than that but maybe they were getting ripped off. It was through Optus.

    • For $1499, I would expect 3-day battery life, a better location for the fingerprint scanner and 256GB of onboard storage.

    • For that price, you get a free wireless charger ($119), a free clear case (one of those back cover cases - $30) in the box, a free 1 year screen replacement ($230-300), and those AKG earphones (also with the S8/+ - $129) in the box.

Just missing from your list is a screen protector which should retail $20-30 in store.

  • +1

$1500? Gosh I bought my run around car for that much. With this current trend the Note10 and Iphone10 will be nearly 2k.

    • +1

So long as people keep voting with their wallets.

  • -1

Wow, literally a $2 item comes free with a $1500 phone. Amazing deal.

    • -3

a free screen repair worth $500-600 is worth $2 to you?

      • +1

Ahh screen repair at Samsung is only in the low $200 range. PS didn't neg you

        • there you go! my bro got ripped by optus then when he sent his recent samsung off for repair it was a LOT more than that.

      • -1

The few screen repair is worth nothing to me. I've never broken a screen in my entire life I've had with mobile phones (since the Motorola TAC days of analogue phones). Glass protectors and proper phone cases also do a great job of saving 80% of the drops for only 10 bucks or so from eBay.
It may be worth something to people who do break screens. But not for me, thank you. I did not want to deliberately break my screen just to take advantage of this laughable "offer".

If you have an AMEX card, register here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325816 and pay with your AMEX card for a $150 cashback.

  • if i can sell my used iphone 7plus 256GB for 1k, i will get it!

and I dont think Note8 can sell for 1k after a year.

Anybody know how much a kidney is worth these days?

    • +2

Free in India because they can steal it from you while you are unconscious.

      • Won’t be able to steal if you sell both before going there

        • Good idea if you plan to fly there in a coffin.

        • @edfoo: You could always use a lemon? Or you know, a kidney dialysis machine :P

  • This is the first phone I can't afford to buy. $1500 is just way too much.

    • +2

      Aren't the iPhone7+ about $1300-1500 already?

      • Never owned an iPhone since iphone 3g.

    • +1

$1350 with that Amex deal …

  • can't wait to see the price going off the roof in the next few years, probably asking like 5k on a phone… smart phone is really smart in making money from us

  • +2

It's worth noting that certain AMEX cards already include complimentary smart phone screen insurance. They will pay for repairs (minus 10% excess fee) to repair your screen, if you purchased it with your AMEX card. And that cover goes beyond the 12 months Samsung is offering.

    • do you know which amex card offer that? i have plat edge

      • Essential has it. I know some others do also but don't know which ones.

  • I visited CashRewards but they only list Samsung NZ
    Pricepal lists 2.0% +

  • Does anyone know if there is a way we can claim Duty Free on these, if we travel before the phone arrives?

    • +2

You can't. You need to have the phone in possession. They check

      • Many thanks; I was wishful about exceptions for pre-orders.

  • Does anyone know what cover this is?

"bonus protective case with your Galaxy Note8 purchase"

  • +1

Does anyone know how we apply for the bonus case?

I've just registered for the screen assure (48 hours to go till confirmed).

    • I was wondering the same thing.

    • +1

Bonus plain clear case is in the packaging with the paperwork.

      • Thanks. I never bothered to open that box.

        It's a pretty crap case.
