Samsung Note 8 Deal @ Optus for $100 a Month Lease Plan with -40GB or $75 -if You Add New Service to Existing Account

122

I was looking for Samsung Note 8 deals and came across the Optus limited time offer. You could get this at any Optus store or online chat. Second service 25% discount has ended as of 03rd September 2017.

You also get the pre order convertible fast charge wireless pad and Samsung Assure one free cracked screen repair within first 12 months, directly from Samsung for all pre orders. Once purchased you need to register via Samsung site and app.

They have the Leasing plan on special usually $130 and now for $100 per month. You get the Note 8  on this for $0 handset repayment . With 40 GB data, (You can also go for the NON Leasing plan, where you own the handset after 24 months. $10 extra per month for non leasing plan ($110 per month) and data is 30GB per month) both plans have the following inclussions - Unlimited standard national calls and text, upto 750 international minutes to selected countries, unlimited international roaming talk and text on zone 1, 1GB international roaming data on zone 1 and included entertainment.

Also if you are an existing Optus mobile customer and you are porting in one of your number from another provider or add a new service you get 25% off on the above plan. Which comes to $75 a month on leasing and $85 on the non leasing plan.

Also you could return the handset after 12 months in good working condition and pay $99 to upgrade to another new handset on 24 months contract.

Even though it's leasing it doesn't that bad, but I think most people can get by without using 40GB mobile data.

  • Since when did they offer leasing? What happens at the end of the contract? What hapoens if you lose or damage the phone?

    • Return the phone
If you lost or break you gotta pay 499
Can buyout at "fair market" value

      • Is it potentially $2400 (over 24 months) +$499?

        • whatever the "Fair Market value" of it is thereafter. Arguably it is $10 a month less over 24 months, so the value would be $240.

        • @bchliu: all depends on how the phone holds its value. Don't bother asking Optus as they can't tell you.

    • You can always get insurance. I always add insurance for high end phones.

After 24 months you can either return or pay market value at that time and buy the phone.

If you are not interested in the leasing plan, they have the same plan offer on the non leasing plans. You will be paying $10 extra. Which becomes $110 per month. After 24 months you own the phone. Less data per month on this, which is 30GB. You can also upgrade after 12 months, by paying $99 and returning the phone.

I prefer the leasing plan, since it has more data, less monthly cost and I usually change handsets once a year. I never keep the old phones.

I'm thinking with $10 extra it might actually be worth it to "own the phone" instead of renting it. Considering that after a year if the phone is still in good condition, you might still get about $5/600 out of it if you sell it, compared to having to pay $99 extra to own the phone or to upgrade to a new phone. Unless obviously if that extra 10GB is extra important to you, but I think for most people 30GB is already overkill.

        • If you choose the own it option and want to keep it after a year and get a new phone, it is not $99 to keep it, you must pay out the full remaining cost of your device including any monthly credits that Optus was going to cover.

Leasing plan is a rip off. Would rather buy grey imports with ebay deal + pre paid plans. It would be much much cheaper.

    • +2

They have the non leasing plan as well, as mentioned on previous comment.

Grey import/ebay deal will still be over $1000 if you want to buy in the next 3 to 4 months. Plus grey imports warranty is not that great. If you devide the cost per month in 24 months for the handset if you buy outright will be $45 minimum and if you need good pre paid with data and international calls will be $30 or $40 per month. Which will come round to the same amount as leasing plan or non leasing plan, which has more value on data, calls, roaming and included entertainment streaming. Plus you get australian stock with proper warranty.

      • To be fair, if I wanted anything above 10gb, I would have to pay $105-$110. Current plan is Optus sim only $40 for $15gb. So I would be paying an extra $65-$70 a month. $65*24 = $1560 (10gb plan). So if I can buy a phone for less than $1560, then it's cheaper to buy outright and go sim only - plus this way I can sell the phone whenever I like and have Aus warranty.

        • Asked a few people in the mobile industry. The way you calculate the by the handset value is not exactly accurate. You should calculate a plan base on deprecated value of a handset. Use Stargazor's below one year plan as example. The plan cost over 12 months is 999. The deprecated value of a note 8 is about 40% (You open it, you use it, ware and tare.. all contribute to the DV). The best price now which is $1200, the DV of first 12 months is $480. ($999-$480)/12 = $43.25.. for a 40gb plan, that is excellent deal.

You should calculate you actual plan value the same way, two years DV for a Samsung device is about 70%. Using the calculation above you can see you pay $75 for 30G of data. Not bad at all. It will be $50 if you can get that 25% discount.

        • @syswong: My simple calculation is based on the exact amount it costs over 24 months vs the cost of sim only plans and buying outright.

In 24 months this plan will cost min $2400, at the end I do not own the phone.
In 24 months buying phone outright and sim only plan = $960(plan) + $1200 (rrp of phone) = $2160. I can then sell the phone for at least $200 at the end of 24 month plan. So total over 24 months could be $1960, although probably less. $1960 is the total so far. If you use the new service discount, then the can take a further $240 away, so $1720

So then is $2400 more or less than $1960/$1720?

*granted we are comparing a 15gb sim only for $40 ($30 with same discount) vs the 40gb plan here. Although as many have said, it's hard to use up 40gb when streaming etc are not included as use.

        • @OnlinePred: The 24 moths calculation I show you is not leasing, you own the phone after 24 months.

$100 line rental $10 handset repayment. 30G data. Stargazor claim you can use the 25% discount if you qualify.

BTW cheapest plan above 15G is most likely virgin which is $60 for 22G.

    Explosion of a deal.

Be sure to also purchase bomb squad suit for safety

  • I've asked online chat.
They said 25% off is only off the main Price of $130 and not the discounted price

    • I was excited for a moment until I saw your comment.

    • So you neg them because they won't let you stack discount….

If you read the 25% off Optus deal comments, someone actually point out (to me) that T&C state it cannot be use with other discount.

      • yeah i negged this before the OP changed the deal and removed the 25% off on the handset plan

mods- please remove neg as OP has changed the details of deal

    • I went and checked from a store and they checked one of the systems and confirmed the 25% second service discount is on the discounted price of $100. Which will come to $75 on the leasing plan.

      • Refer to landroverz7 reply on this deal:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324960

But then if you are willing to pay them 2.4K and not own the phone, may be the discount can apply.

        • I am changing my handset every year and dont want to keep old handset, so i don't pay 2.4k. All i will be paying for this plan and to use Note 8 for one year and change is $999 including the $99 upgrade fee. The selling point for me is the plan and its inclussions, which you dont get on sim only plans.

Also if your not interested in leasing plan, they have the non leasing plans as mentioned previously.

Also the plan I have mentioned does get the 25% off after discount plan of $130 to $100. For every additional mobile plan as i have mentioned earlier :)

        • @Stargazor: If you do get that 25% on top of the $30 discount then yes, it is a great plan to go on.

Hope someone associated with Optus can verify that.

        • +1

          @Stargazor:

Does that mean you can get ($140 - $30)*0.75 = $85 if choosing to own the phone? And if so, is this discount only available in-store (and im assuming mileage varies?)

Also would this be stackable with the student discount?

        • +1

@yoyomaster123: To own the handset after 24 months. Plan Discount $130 - $30 = $100 for plan. If you are adding second service on this plan you get 25% off on the plan. Which plan comes to $75 a month. To have note 8 on this plan, you need to add $10 handset repayment. Which then comes to $85 a month.

You cannot stack another % discount, if you are adding the second service 25% discount. So no to 10% student discount on top of this.

        • @syswong: it does apply the 25% discount on second service with the $130 for $100, you can check this at any optus store and ask them to check the system with plan offers. Only time you cannot stack is with another % discount, such as student discount of 10% on top of the 25%.

  • 25% discounted price is in store only as they had put stickers at entry counter.

I preordered mine from virgin mobile
Went with the $99pm plan with $8 off for velocity members (which took 2 minutes to register) and got the first month credit for asking if I'm eligible for additional discounts. Ended up $87 pet month with 16gb data, unlimited national and international calls to 5 countries with $300 to other countries - good deal?

    • -2

      Optus is better than Virgin.

      • What's the basis you're basing this on since virgin mobile uses Optus 4g network anyway

        • less priority, expected, but usually fine unless there's super heavy congestion during events

        • Virgin can't do busy forward, or similar forwards. That is what i found out years ago.

    • not bad, how to get 1st month credit?

      • +1

I just asked if i was eligible for any more credits, he put me on hold for a minute and gave me the credit ok be he came back.

  • Seems Optus withdrawn the offer. I remember it was suppose to be good for another 10 days at least. SUCKS!!

    • Oh.. You missed it. It was by 3/9. Hope there will be a better deal coming.

      • The $70 140g data sim expires on 03/09 which now actually become on going. Not the Note 8 deal, it was 13/09 I believe the offer expires…..

The reason I remember the Note 8 deal is good for another few days is because I remember the date goes few days after MI MIX 2 launch (11/09). Did not know Optus can pull offers early. No need to argue, I will take a screen shot next time.

  • You can still get this deal through Optus chat. Just need to ask for it..

Anyone find a way to get the extra 25% discount without actually needing to have it as a second service? 85/month would be fantastic for 30gb.

Anyone get any bonus credit/free months for switching from another Telco over to Optus?

    • You only can 25% off from original full price now not from discounted price. Not attractive anymore.

  • Spoke to an Optus store manager today and he gave me a heads up that the $140/month - 30GB plan with the Note 8 will once again be discounted to $110/month as of tomorrow! Not only that, but apparently the $160/month - 100gb plan with the Note 8 will be discounted to $120/month! Brace yourselves.. lol

  • Has anyone received the email "Your Optus Mobile Device is on its way" with "Your Device has been dispatched from our warehouse and will be with you soon" in the body? When I click through it doesn't give me any shipping/tracking details, it just says in progress. What does yours say?
