550

HN Business & Education has the Google Home for $159.20. Postage to NSW metro is $5.95. You also get a $50 HN gift card, which makes it a pretty sweet deal.

To access this site you need a membership from educational, government or private organisations. In other words, you can only browse the HN Business & Education store through AGL Rewards, TAFE, fitbit, RACQ, etc. websites.

P.S. I used the AGL Rewards site to get access.

Who here has a Google home and did you use it after the first 15 minutes?

    • +9

      Yes and yes…

      Any more questions?

      • +1

what did you use it for ?

        • +4

I use mine for music a lot, telling it to turn on and off spotify is fun and really nice to lie in bed before I fall asleep and then just yell at it to turn off just before I doze off. Also as an alarm to remind when laundry is done etc.

I really want to connect it to my chromecast (which you could buy with the gift card :p) I should be able to turn my tv on and off (with CEC capable tv I hope) and browse netflix which will make things easier for me.

Lastly I want to use it with a lamp so I can switch the lights on and off because I'm lazy.

If you like development, you can hit up api.ai and you can make your own bots and test them on the device (US eng needed) which I hope means the skys the limit someday (program everything to do whatever)

I use mine to control my lights and get the weather report pretty frequently. Sometimes for podcasts too.

        • @eug: how do you set up control with lights?

        • As mentioned below and above, a whole heap of things.

It’s connected to my SmartThings hub, Logitech Harmony hub, Philips Hue hub and a whole bunch of flows created through IFTTT which lets us control 95% of the electronics in the house which includes the home theatre setup, lights, door locks and a combined shopping list that my wife and I share by simply asking GH to add an item to the list.

I’m pretty new to the whole home automation game but even as a novice I’ve found it easy to setup and the convenience has been great.

@shandawgg: My lights can already be controlled with RF remotes, so I now use Google Home to control a BroadLink RM Pro which can re-broadcast RF signals to control the lights.

I wouldn't recommend the BroadLink if you have RF-controllable lights though, something like this Sonoff has native Google Home support so would be more reliable.

        • I now have two Google Homes in the house, for different rooms.

They control the lights(4 lights total in different rooms), play music, listen to podcasts and soon control the television/projector/Amplifier with my Harmony.

I got one to integrate into my home automation but I was surprised at how useful it is standalone. I have it near the kitchen so I am frequently setting timers and adding things to the shopping list which is shared with the Mrs. One cool feature I like is you can ask it how to spell words. Great for primary school kids that are asking how to spell every second word. It is also just that bit more convenient than pulling your phone out of your pocket.

I'm new to home automation but I have a Raspberry Pi running OpenHab 2 and a Z-Wave USB stick controller plugged in. So far I have my Sony TV turning on/off, my Windows media center PC sleep/wake, a set of downlights on/off/dim and some lamps on/off.

I wouldn't recommend OpenHab unless you have a background in IT. I haven't used it but apparently Home Assistant is easier and also installs on a Raspberry Pi.

Even without advanced tinkering you can get other automation hubs connected easily like the Phillips Hue and Belkin Wemo.

        • @eug: Have you tried playing the name game with it? My Niece loves it!

        • @paaj: Nope! I'll give it a try tonight!

    • Yea I've had mine for about a year (brought one in America) I use it to control lights, use its "my day" feature in the mornings and ask it a question every now and then.

On average i'd say I use it once every day and without smart lights id use it like 3-4 times a week.

      • +2

I use the 'my day' feature every morning and recognise it has massive potential.
Google recently added a 'news' feature where it will read to you the morning news from a podcast!

Had one for about a week…won it in a competition :-)

I work in IT, so was curious about how far I could push it. Not far enough for me (yet), but see potential.

I have many WiFi connected devices (Smart TV, Printer, HTiB, PVR, Xbox One, etc) but 'Home' can't interact with any of them. Can't make calls, even if my phone is connected via Bluetooth. 'Home' in the US can do this natively.

'Home' (and AWS Echo) are in their infancy, and have some potential.

We use it mostly as a jukebox (Spotify), have played with "Crystal Ball" and trivia, and also trying out the shopping list app.

Interesting, but probably wouldn't spend my hard earned on one (just yet)…

  • Dang… Now… anyone want to get me access there :)

  • +2

I was very sceptical when i bought it but i find it quite useful (timers, reminders, music & radio). Now that Bluetooth functionality is added, it is even better. My son keeps asking it questions which is helpful as a educational resource.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • how do I get to it via my fitbit account?

    • anyone???

      • Can't work it out either

  • Yep, can only see it for $199, but if you log in via Cashrewards you get free postage…

  • Wonder why through CashRewards to HN BnE, this shows as $199?

    • Hopefully TA is working on this right now

      • +9

4 steps ahead of you. Sent email to HN B&E as soon as I saw this post.

        • +2

We can always rely on you to be on the ball and act on behalf of all ozbargainers. Well done.

        • Absolute legend. Much appreciated

        • and probably your email alerted them and they raised the price.

  • I've found the deal via AGL but it doesn't have $50 Gift card with it.

    • Read the description in the screenshot

      • Got it. Bought it. Cool

  • Can you also please advise , how to register? I tried searching about registering but cant find how? It would be of great help.

  • Yeah great deal, go it via AGL rewards.

    • What price are you seeing it for via AGL rewards? I can see $199 with $50 HN GC

      • Same here….

  • Can you change the name recognition from 'OK Google'? Would really like to set it to any name I want instead of constantly advertising Google in my own house everytime I use it.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure my default it's either "Ok Google" or "Hey Google"

      So yeah still advertising google.

    • +1

No you can't change the hotword. Rumour has it that they might enable customising it at some point.

  • Is it really any better than 'Ok Google' on the mobile phone ?
As I find that very average and only useful for basic stuff e.g timers, alarms, stopwatch, weather, basic trivia.

    • I use mine for home automation, pretty sure the google on the phone can't do integrate the same way.

      • Ok so let's take out the home automation and pretend I use it as a standalone device. Do you think it is just an Android phone in a big case, big speaker type device or is the 'ok google' smarter / better ?

    • Is it really any better than 'Ok Google' on the mobile phone ?

It depends on how you intend to use it. It's much louder and you don't have to turn on your phone or leave it plugged in for ok google detection to work with the screen off. Very few phones have a dedicated voice recognition processor to allow that.

The mics on the Google Home are amazing too, they can pick you up from quite a distance away.

      • Ok thanks. Our mobiles seem to allow Ok google detection when phone is locked (but still must be on). I'm now curious if it is any smarter as at least with the phone if it can't answer something it throws up a bunch of links. Whereas this device isn't going to have the option for me to click on links (unless I presume it then has to be connected to a screen which then means another device running (the screen)).

  • I ordered mine from this offer on Monday. the site said personal shoppers only but you can only pick delivery as the option when you pay.

    • Does this mean if you put Organisation/Company name the $50 card is not provided ?

      • No. Personal shoppers mean no commercial/business customers. It has nothing to do with the gift card.

  • Thanks Op.
    Just ordered one :)

  • +3

Ordered one but don.t think I need one but for the kid as she ask too many questions.

  • +1

They have raised the price :(

    • B@stards!

  • Went to $169.15 when logging in via Cash Rewards, but now seeing it for $188?

  • I tried logging in using Cash Reward or AGL Reward but both is showing $199 and not $159.20.

  • -8

    jacked the price. not happy

  • no wonder i kept showing $199 :/

    • +1

Yeah.. they probably realise that too many orders coming through and loosing money with the $50 gift card.

  • -2

Just so everyone knows, Google Home and Android Phones for "knowledge purposes" activate voice recording / voice prompting upon "OK" automatically. So for the people that are concerned about privacy, be careful because if you use this thing it will record at random moments to capture your voice to improving itself or simply on the word "OK" if loud enough and it will do silently. To check for yourself of previous recordings, be sure to check this link: https://myaccount.google.com/activitycontrols/audio?utm_sour…

  • Has anyone's shipped yet?

I presume you get a shipping notice?

    • shipped yesterday, delivered today - and the $50 gift card was in the box.

As an aside, I wasn't home so TNT took it to the nearest 'sorry we missed you' pick up place so I could pick it up later. This is a network of places and sure beats waiting for a redelivery or having to travel to an out of the way depot.

      • Thanks. Did you get an order shipped email? I only have an order confirmed email after ordering.

        • yup. Got one from TNT when they picked it up, and then another when it was about to be delivered.

        • @wallet72:
Thanks. Mine just shipped this afternoon.

  • Using the link through RACQ showing price as $199 now :(

  • Received mine today along with the $50 voucher.
