FREE Entry into The AmEx Lounge @ Sydney/Melbourne International Airports, Various AmEx Cards Required

640

Long-running deal, last post was more than 6 months ago, and prior to that, 2 years 7 months ago. Complies with deal posting guidelines.

Posting for the benefit of eligible Amex Card holders (hopefully most OzBargainers) looking to relax in a lounge, away from the crowded airport terminals.

I am in Melbourne and also don't have any of the eligible Cards, so have not taken advantage of this offer, but will be applying for an Explorer and if the rumours are true, will be visiting Melbourne airport's lounge later this year/early next year.

Copied and pasted from the terms and conditions on the Amex site, the Eligible Cards are:
* American Express® Centurion Card
* American Express® Platinum Card
* American Express® Business Centurion Card
* American Express® Business Platinum Card
* American Express® Corporate Platinum Card
* American Express® Qantas Corporate Platinum Card
* American Express® Explorer™ Credit Card
* American Express® Business Explorer Credit Card
* American Express® Platinum Reserve Credit Card
* David Jones American Express® Platinum Card
* Qantas American Express Ultimate Card
* American Express Velocity Platinum Card
* American Express Airpoints Platinum Card
* Westpac Altitude Black American Express Card
* Westpac Earth Black American Express Card
* Commonwealth Bank Diamond Awards American Express Card

The first four offer unlimited entries, the rest offer 2 entries per calendar year.

Hey, free is free…

Edit 27 March 2018
The Melbourne AmEx lounge is now officially open. Reports are it is bigger than the Sydney one, and is a welcome addition to the bore that is MEL airport.

  • Alternatively you can join priority pass to get lounge access.

    • But I thought priority pass doesn't extend out to spouse / kids, you would still have to pay US $27 per person right?

      Although, I think you can get some discounts, at certain eateries where there are no lounges (something like $36 dollars off your bill - never tried it though)

      • Yes, if you travel a lot amex platinum charge card is the best, unlimited access. If you travel only once or twice a year with family, amex explorer is good enough.

    • Priority pass has no lounge in Melbourne and no plans for a lounge

    It's not bad, accompanying kids can actually get in for free which is stated on their conditions, rather than up to discretion like Qantas if you use their complementary invitation cards.

    Used it for a trip earlier this year, with wife and 2 teens (At the time with ANZ Black). The kids loaded up on the free food and drinks and then complained during the flight on how bad plane food was !!

    • It's good that they state the conditions clearly. I hate it when I have to ask especially when everyone is already there

      • Yeah, exactly, imagine telling the kids that everyone going eat at the airport lounge before the flight, and then when you get there, you have to pay $$$ for them all to get in, or at times, can't even get in !!

        • I feel like I'm begging when I need to ask…

  • In case anyone is wondering, I have called AMEX to clarify if it is indeed 2 passes per CALENDAR year (for those non-Centurion cardholders) and the agent confirmed that is definitely the case. Technically, you can apply and be approved by 31 December and use your 2 passes for travel by 31 December 2017. Then will be able to get another 2 passes from 1 January 2018 and it would be valid until 31 December 2018.

      There was probably no need for you to do that, because this is specifically stated in the description.

      The first four offer unlimited entries, the rest offer 2 entries per calendar year.

      Although maybe it could be a little more prominent?

      I thought about suggesting for that to be stated until I realised it was already there.

      • Thanks illumination, thought I had covered all my bases. Just edited the description to make it more prominent.

        I am still yet to use this feature as I don't even have an eligible card yet, but posting it for the benefit of the OzB community since the last post was more than 6 months ago. I certainly am very excited to try it out when I do get the chance! Going to a lounge while flying economy must be the best thing ever!

  • Check with your Amex Card, some cards may give you priority pass membership for free, then give two free priority pass entry every year.

    • Amex lounge in Melbourne airport is so small, not much food and we couldnt even find a table for 4. No one at the front desk so we just walked in. Overall, quite disappointing but luckily charge card also gave us priority pass for $144 worth of food at movida.

  • If you want to check it out virtually, AusBT has published a review now.

  • The Sydney lounge could do with a little improvement in general, but especially regarding capacity. Once they gave priority to Platinum card holders, but not any more. In the mornings it is very usual for lots of people to be refused initial entry due to it being full. It is not a big lounge.

  • Does anyone know if these lounges can be used on arrival / in transit to a domestic flight ?

    • Amex lounge in Melbourne airport is at the International Departure Area, near the gates you have to take an escalator down

      • thanks - transiting through the Sydney one. Its more a question on whether they will let us in so we can have a shower before jumping on a flight back to MEL.

        • Sydney Amex lounge is International Airside (Outwards) and not possible to access from the inwards side. And so you would need to be transitting to an outwards International flight. And I don't think that there is a shower.

  • MIght want to update this for Commbank - https://www.commbank.com.au/latest/amexclosure.html

  • I got the Westpac Altitude card almost a year ago, recently took a flight and used my Amex lounge access in Sydney. the drinks were awesome, but the food was a bit meh

    the lounge itself was FULL and a bit noisy, and the boys toilet was tiny and filthy.

    overall it made a nice change from sitting at the gate waiting for my delayed flight
