Same has been $30/mo on Optus, is Telstra really worth double the price??

    • +11

In some areas yes, I'd rather pay double for usable service.

      • +2

I've never really had any of the problems most mention about Optus, but if that's the case in your area then yeah, Telstra's the only option I guess.

      • Fully agree - I was on Optus and reception in some areas was awful. Switched to Telstra (actually, Boost) and it was good. Switched back to Optus (Virgin) last year and those areas I had issues with way back when are now good.

Still, worth checking first (get a cheap sim and see how reception is for you with your mobile and the areas you are normally) before jumping carriers.

As an aside, Boost provide some decent Telstra network deals (eg unlimited calls/text plus 3GB data plus 1GB extra data on weekend: http://boost.com.au/shop/7gb-for-30/) plus free apple music streaming. I have Google music so Optus/Virgin is better for me as streaming that's free.

        • Where I live got Optus 4G pretty early on, but even whole travelling I've not noticed many problems. Only places I've seen without signal are really remote towns in outback Australia. For those situations I just dual SIM with Optus and a $50 prepaid Telstra broadband sim (1 year expiry). Beyond that it's been quite solid for me, despite all the issues I've heard others have had.

    • Where is the $30 per month on Optus with 15gig of data?

      • $40 plan deal combined with the 25% off deal.

Currently $40 plan is 14GB (not 15) and 25% isn't active, but you could still probably contact chat and get on it the deal if it's a new plan.

  • some people on whirlpool reported to be offering 17g/18g/20g for $50 per month.

    • I got 15g for $50 pm via Web chat (with some other inclusions like some free international calls etc) not long ago. Had 25gig for a month randomly seemed like a glitch but it just got fixed to 15gig.

    • I would love $50 for 20gb a month

Just twist their arms. Rang disconnections, told them I was going to Optus' $40 14GB plan. After some extensive negotiations, eventually they crumbled and offered me $49 20GB. But this was also negotiating a NBN FTTN/VOIP bundle at the same time…

        • I'm leaving their nbn their call centres are dog shite.

      • I got 19gb for $44 out of them today. M plan with $15 discount and 4gb bonus data. Just ask disconnections what your contract payout is and they'll throw all sorts of deals at you. I've also only been back with Telstra for a month after trying Optus and finding out how shit they are

        • Did you have to call retention to get that? I just tried the Telstra Chat but they couldnt do anything for me. useless sales department!!

        • @arctan: I did it via online chat. You can select disconnections when starting the chat.

  • I got 10GB for $40/month about 6 months ago - wonder what's going on with the pricing

    • For people saying they're getting x GB for $y a month with Telstra - would you mind posting how? (Web chat, called sales, OzB post, corporate/private rate) Did you tell them "Optus is offering X" or did they offer the plan without you asking?

My contract is up for renewal next month and I was going to switch away to an MVNO, but 10GB for $40 is enough for me to stay.

Check comments for this deal for details.

Most existing customers were chatting to disconnections for the BYO M plan discounted from $70 to $50/m

I had a $60-70 plan for like 5-7 gig or something and called up and basically asked how to go about cancelling (I did this because I knew I would be transferred to retention which I did). Anyway spoke to retention and told them Optus were offering $50 for 10gb and I wanted to stay but if they couldn't price match I was leaving (I said all of this nicely of course). Anyway, they were happy to price match (and in fact price beat by $10), but the lady had issues adding the additional data on, so she ended up saying she could only add 14gb on my plan. So I ended up getting $40 14 gig 12 month contract.

I always found it is hit or miss, some are happy to help, some are happy for you to leave (which happened recently with my sister).

      • Sorry, I was given a $10/month discount on a $50 plan when switching to postpaid from prepaid. This was around the time of the 12 month Apple Music deal.

Frankly everyone here should target good data deal … who needs text and unlimited calls .. when you have Whatsapp, FT and etc.

oh emergency you can call free from your phone if it has activated line… but generally Whatsapp quality is better than normal phone calls the voice is more clearer.

Because in some place internet is nt the same level of service as voice and FB etc calls can be choppy.

My mate uses his personal phone for work and a lot of business people don't have whatsapp etc.
I know a lot of older people don't know how all these apps work.

    Lukewarm…. Gimme 5GB, 1000 minutes for $25/month

Seems like prices have increased with some greater inclusions. Mx is now $49/m. Sheesh!

Might have something to do with their "low cost subsidary" (Telstra Jetstar?) Belong adding mobile plans soon.

    • Telstra.
      Gimme service in rural areas…

I am a customer of both Telstra and Optus. Although I'm a Melbourne metro customer I do travel to country areas. I have found Optus' coverage to be reliable and more than adequate (for me). Where Optus falls down is data speed outside metro. My Telstra device will get approx 40mb/s while Optus gets under 3mb/s.

  • Crazy to think 10 years ago we were on plans with plans 30-500MB.

    Now we are exceeding 20GB!
