    White noise machine?
    Just use YouTube

    • I use an echo dot .. has many many sleep sound free apps and can also use it to stream music etc. About the same price as this also.

      • Which white noise skill would you recommend for the dot?

Cant you buy a $5 radio and dont tune it? Whats the difference?

    • +3

      static isn't white noise.

You are correct. However, Avatar didn't say "static". He was referring to white noise. Now, FM interstation hiss is not equal power at all frequencies, but it's close. It does the job. The paragraph below is helpful (but inaccurate when it talks of FM interstation hiss as "static").

White noise is a common synthetic noise source used for sound masking by a tinnitus masker. White noise machines and other white noise sources are sold as privacy enhancers and sleep aids and to mask tinnitus. Alternatively, the use of an FM radio tuned to unused frequencies ("static") is a simpler and more cost-effective source of white noise. However, white noise generated from a common commercial radio receiver tuned to an unused frequency is extremely vulnerable to being contaminated with spurious signals, such as adjacent radio stations, harmonics from non-adjacent radio stations, electrical equipment in the vicinity of the receiving antenna causing interference, or even atmospheric events such as solar flares and especially lightning.

I'm assuming the $5 radio can receive FM radio transmissions. Usually, static is heard not on FM tuners, but rather on AM tuners. Static is the pops and clicks from electro-static discharge . Most people don't distinguish this noise from the hiss from an untuned FM receiver.

I already have a noise machine at home, she makes a high-pitched whine noise.

Thank god for the Bose ANC headphones.

      thanks for the laugh
I guess they have a explanation of the grunting sounds we make :)

Listening to Turnbull and Shorten is equivalent to white noise

It's this price every couple of weeks. Not really a sale imo.

  • I find brown noise better, white seems to high pitch for my liking, as others have said, I just use YouTube.

    • Agree. I use a phone app that allows you to adjust and mix different sounds."relax and sleep".

  • Looking at Amazon now, there are heaps more sleep sound machines than when I bought a Marpac ten years ago. It's too loud for me- have to put it in a wardrobe to get preferred volume- rarely use it. This has lots of volume control so should be better.

I just close my eyes and fall asleep.

      I wish ! :)

I need a fan on all night to help me sleep.

White noise is too hissy to be comfortable since Human hearing responds approximately to octave bands.

Pink noise is a more neutral sound.

However, professional noise masking systems use a negative slope spectrum in octave bands of about 5dB/octave, flattened out at low and at high frequencies.

You have to find what suits you.

I use an air purifier, it makes white noise (I think) whilst cleaning the air so I don't wake up with a stuffy nose. It also goes into auto turbo fan mode when I fart.

    • Any on sale?

      • +3

You know he is not selling farts, right?

      • +1

I haven't seen any. Get one with both a charcoal filter and HEPA filter if you are buying one.
