  • What did it used to be?

    • +2

It was $15 for 250 mins and 500MB data that didn't rollover. Still has unlimited SMS, MMS.

Woolworths Mobile recently released an $18 unlimited calls with 1.5GB data plan so the Aldi one is good if you want something a little cheaper with less data. Both AldiMobile and Woolworths Mobile use Telstra Wholesale.

The next step up is the AldiMobile $20 for Unlimited Calls, SMS, MMS and 1.5GB rollover data.

      • Ah ok thanks. Do you need a Rewards card to get the Woolies $18 deal?

        • +1

Yes, Rewards Card required for the Woolies $18 deal.

Checkout the Woolworths Mobile post for all the details.

Looks like a good alternative once Telstra cancels Google Play rorts on current prepaid offerings.

    • +2

Dont. Just don't even think that into existence.

      • +1

Check the Whirlpool thread - Simplicity is going first it seems. So the rot may be setting in 😡

        • Noooooooooooooooooooooo….

      • Too late. They've already started killing it off =(

    • +1

Wait can you explain that please? As in refunding your credit cost through those special app micro transactions? I thought they closed that loophole

      • Yes. On Freedom Plus you pay $40/mth and get $40 included Google Play credit plus included calls. Use apps to convert 50-55% of the $40 to cash. Loophole was still open but they have started closing it starting Wednesday this week.

  • I added some more information to the post. This only affects two of the cheapest plans — the $15 Per month S plan and the $20 M plan.

    • +2

Perhaps this is also relevant to append:
Unused data rolls over once only then expires after 30 days.

It's reading like perpetual rollover otherwise.

    • +1

Great work scrimshaw. The post is much more informative.

  • Boost and Aldimobile is using Telstra.

Just wondering if they are using different 4G networks? as in ALDI's 'Telstra' is not as good as the Boost's?

Anyone know if there is any difference?

    • +2

Telstra and Boost use the Telstra Retail network.
      https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage

AldiMobile and Woolworths Mobile use Telstra Wholesale Network.
      http://mobilemaps.net.au/maps/mcm/4G.html

Telstra Wholesale has less coverage that Telstra Retail, especially in areas with no Optus coverage.

    • Boost has access to the whole retail Telstra network whereas Aldi only has access to the wholesale network. So boost wins out on coverage. However the 4g speed with boost is capped vs the actual Telstra network to provide product differentiation.

      • Boost has uncapped speeds, whereas Aldi is capped to 100mbps down. I'm not sure exactly where people are getting the idea that Boost's speeds are capped, though I will say that their customer support isn't very helpful at providing that kind of info.

I can say with almost 100% certainty that boost doesn't have any speed caps whatsoever, as I frequently get speedtests at home of around 120mbps, and there have been about 3 or 4 times when I was near a tower where I've gotten between 250 and 300mbps down.

        • Because Boost is 4G, not 4GX. Telstra own Boost so its unlikely they would be a cheap version of themselves, with full access to towers and speeds. Its fine though, Ive been very happy with Boost.

You get to go Telstra, or pick one of the Telstra benefits.
The wholesale side gets full speed, while Boost gets its full coverage. And only Boost has the full coverage AFAIK.

        • @Tuba: Telstra don't own Boost …

        • @Bargain4U: The direct debits from my account, say Telstra.

        • @Tuba: Thats strange but it's operated by Boost Tel Pty Ltd at 170 – 180 Bourke Street, Alexandria, NSW 2015. Their name is on the sign too.

        • @Bargain4U: Thats how subsidiary companies work. They legally must run independent of the parent. Has to as theres a duty to Boost shareholders to ensure Boost runs in Boosts best interests, not Telstras. Boost share holders have no benefit from Telstra share price. My understanding is Telstra is involved in more than the supply of a network. Id be interested to hear good reasons to doubt it.

        • +1

@Tuba: Telstra doesn't own Boost, it operates the backend systems (and billing) and provides the network via an agreement with Boost.

Here's an old knowledge base article which doesn't acknowledge the 4G changes to Boost, but the ownership information is still valid:
          https://community.boost.com.au/t5/Setup-Phone-Support-Knowle…

This is why Telstra are moving to create their own cut price mobile brand with their actual Belong brand:
          https://www.itnews.com.au/news/telstra-to-launch-low-cost-mo…

If they owned Boost, they wouldn't need another brand :)

    • Yes there is.

Telstra runs 2 networks, telstra, and telstra wholesale (often called telstra mvno).

The MVNO reception is 'tailored' to roughly match Optus' coverage, with a few minor exceptions in remote areas.
I also believe the MVNO dont get 4gx speeds; only 4g.

Telstra network is much broader reaching, and has 4gx.
The only exception is BOOST who partnered with Telstra before they had a 'cut down network'.

The tldr, is that Telstra mvno's are usually ever so slightly further reaching than optus and vodafone, however nowhere near 'full telstra'.

Optus and Vodafone MNVO's get their whole network.

If you do live remote, always check Vodafone first. The recently tried to 'fill black spots' even Telstra are weak at, and have a wider bandwith for mobile data, so are the most reliable for data (if your reception is good).

As for this deal, i still dont think id go this, over Jeenee mobile….

      • If I'm in a optus 1 bar spot, no 4g coverage only 'H' whatever that is, will going to Aldi help?
On optus I'm in a full 4g coverage area technically. Must be a valley or sth.

        • H is the fastest form of 3G
Well, technically H+ but not all phones differentiate.

Not many people want to hear it, but usually the blame lies with the phone.

Even if you're not with telstra, look at what phones meet their bluetick (reception) ratings.

Ive been places with my blackberry, getting 4 out of 5 bars of 4g where people with iphones and samsung phones get single bar, and drop out.

Now ive tried to help, think mate, theres no way for us to know an answer for you.

Wheres the closest telstra mvno tower?
          How about optus?
          Voda?

          Which is closest?
We dont even know where you are.

Perhaps you have a friend or two? Maybe they're with a different provider?

I dont mean to be rude, but its late, and im tired, and how would we know better than you, who lives in that location, and has a phone to test with, first hand?

      • 4GX is just telstra's marketing for their 700mhz network, which all MVNOs have access to. You might be thinking of Carrier Aggregation, where your phone will combine multiple frequencies together for faster speeds, but in my experience, Aldi has access to that as well.

        • I can test that theory hopefully within a few weeks.

I have a mate with an aldi sim, and we have multiple nighthawk modems at work.

Ill see if it can hit 1gbps throughput, like the telstra sim.

  • provided you immediately recharge

I'd like to know their definition of immediately. Say if my current pack expires late at night and I recharge the next day.

    • +4

On the AldiMobile website it says
"Rollover only applies if an equal or higher priced Value Pack is acquired within 24 hours of expiry of the previous Value Pack. Otherwise, unused data is forfeited."

      • Thanks! Very helpful.

  • Hi, Is there any advantage of this plan over the kogan ones apart from having a different network? I'm just wondering since I'm looking for a different provider.

    • +3

Kogan is way better value for included data (6GB for $16.90 vs Aldi 500MB for $15) while the offer is currently running. Just need to check Vodafone reception for where you live/work/conduct life.

      • Was Kogan's one (6GB $16.99/Month) only for certain numbers of renewal or is it unlimited?

        • The offer is to pay for 1 year upfront. Then it's back to the normal price, or wait for the offer to be repeated.

        • @amts: Ohh right! Thats right, I can recall that promotion by Kogan few months ago…

        • @PAXA359: Currently on now.

    No roaming is the killer.

    • AldiMobile has roaming but they don't think it's cheap :)

      https://www.aldimobile.com.au/roaming/

"You should be aware that charges for usage whilst you are roaming are much higher than charges at home in Australia. If you need to use your phone a lot whilst overseas, we would suggest that you consider buying a local SIM in the country you are visiting to avoid high charges. Here's some other tips to help save your PAYG credit whilst roaming:"

"You'll need to log in to My ALDImobile via our website and select the service you would like to enable for roaming. In the shortcut menu, you'll see the option 'International Roaming' select this and then you'll see the option to enable or disable roaming.Make sure you enable roaming a week before you intend to leave to make sure your phone is activated in time."

  • I don't understand, why can't they just offer unlimited data rollover??

    • Just guessing, trying to think of a reason why.

Might be related to uncertainty about future rates from Telstra.

Woolworths mobile has rollover that expires September 2018. Perhaps that's when they renegotiate with Telstra.

By limiting their risk Woolies and Aldi may be able to offer us better deals.

      • mmm…. time will tell and we'll soon find out!!

    • It's simply to keep costs down so they are able to offer these cheap unlimited plans.

Offering one-time unused data rollover is really just a bit of clever marketing especially on these low-data plans. To take advantage of the small amount of data that rolled over, you first have to use your normal plan inclusion which means there will be no data to roll over for the next month.

For me it's not a significant selling point of these low-data plans.

  • Assuming Woolworths' coverage is the same as this, why wouldnt someone use Woolies oppose to ALDI? 10% cheaper with Woolworths rewards.

    • -1

Maybe for someone offended by WW's reliance on poker machines and the subsequent exploitation of disadvantaged communities that goes with one armed bandits?

    • +2

i think perhaps you cant do roaming on woolies? and no rollover of data

      • I see. Roaming. Will make the switch once my monthly cycle is over.

        • +1

Roaming is one advantage but you don't need to switch until the need for roaming is getting close.

Woolies has the advantages of easier access to sim cards as there are fewer Aldi stores and slightly different plans.

AldiMobile has the advantages of roaming, PAYG if you want gaps between valuepacks, rollover data for month to month data usage variations and superpacks when they are available.

Woolies needs something to match Aldi's PAYG.

  • Telstra and Telstra resellers don't compete on price at the moment.

  • how much does an aldi sim cost? set up costs etc?

    • $5 at the Aldi checkout with $5 of PAYG credit.

      • The $5 PAYG credit is also valid for 365 days once activated.

        • thanks guys. what can you use PAYG credit for if on an unlimited plan? if you go over data limit or something?
and do you know how long it takes to port numbers across?

        • @chocfrogs456: I would say it would go towards excess usage or anything that isn't part of your plan - international calls that aren't in their included list perhaps. You can always leave setting up a recharge until you've used the $5 credit and then recharge once it's used.

With number porting, my wife activated her sim and the port request Sunday around 12pm and it was ported yesterday at 8am. If you do it during weekdays I'd presume it would be done within a few hours.

        • +1

@Slave1: fabulous - thanks for your help!

  • -1

For just $1 more, you can get more than double the data ALDI provides, ie 1.5GB, with unlimited calls and text from Vaya. No roll-over data.
    Or $1 less, with a 6 months contract $14 per month, 1.5GB.

    Link:
    https://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Mobile

    • +4

      Vote 'No' for Vaya.

      • +1

@tranter, any reasons for no vote for Vaya?
I was thinking of getting it.

        • I had a bad experience with them with their billing. Bought a 12 month prepaid.. started charging me a new plan after prepaid was over. Bad vaya bad. Had to ring them up and cancel and not even sure if I will get refunded one month of nothing that I paid $15 for.

Was a mistake to go with vaya for me.

    • But Aldi is on the Telstra network, whilst Vaya is… Optus?

  • Does anyone if you can transfer current mobile number to Aldi SIM card?

    • +1

Yes, as part of the activation process

  • Thanks for the heads-up with this offer. Thanks also to the great discussion. The indoor's has been on Aldi Mobile for a few years - but we have hit a few coverage issues. Now I look at boostmobile with 1GB data and unlimited calls/texts for $10 - on the full Telstra network - I'm gonna switch.

    • You might be better off with the Boost $30 plan than their $10 plan.
That $10 1GB Boost offer is for 7 days not 30 days.
      https://boost.com.au/plans/

      • whoops - i didn't notice that - thanks GC

    • The indoor's has been on Aldi Mobile for a few years - but we have hit a few coverage issues

      Try going outside :-P

  • Where does it say unlimited calls?
Only mentioned that for the bigger packs

    • On the AldiMobile homepage https://www.aldimobile.com.au they have a banner with 4 promotions.
The first one has a "find out More" link to this page https://www.aldimobile.com.au/newplans

They still have the current plans listed as that is what you get if you recharge before the new plans are available (tomorrow).

      • ok cool thanks
when i was looking on my phone yesterday i couldn't see the "unlimited calls"
        on desktop i can
        :)
        good deal
wish there was more data tho…

  • tried to find this at my local Aldi last time. edit: {thought this was the deal posted earlier for the 12 month plan-which seems to have disappeared}
Settled for Jeenee Mobile found here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324587
    Jeenee pricing
    $9.90
    1 month: 500mb with unlimited calls/text
    6 months: 750mb with unlimited calls/text
    12 months: 1gb with unlimited calls/text

    $14.90
    1 month: 1.5gb with unlimited calls/text
    6 months: 1.75gb with unlimited calls/text
    12 months: 2gb with unlimited calls/text

    $20
    1 month: 2gb with unlimited calls/text
    6 months: 2.25gb with unlimited calls/text
    12 months: 2.5gb with unlimited calls/text

    plus more…

    • Which network is it? Telstra, or Optus?

      • Website says Optus. Wonder how the service is?

        • +1

For us the Optus network is great, for you, who knows??? I tried Vodafone and for me it was useless. I have been on Telstra for a few years and it has been good to me too. Partner has been using Optus with no issues for years. But location seems to be key when choosing a network and what works good for one does not work so well for others

      • Optus and my Partner has been with Optus for years (though not Jeenee) with no issues. But I will say that does not mean much as it really does seem to depend on your location as to which network is best for you.

  • Got a friend on to Jeenee. Pray that you never have to ring them. I have, 3 times- 34-31-42 minute wait for someone to answer.

  • Okay you gorgeous mob… What's the VERY BEST PAYG PLAN for northern suburb of Brisbane?
First time PAYG so need some simple advice for a newbie… be gentle!!! lol ;)

  • +1

Looks like the new Unlimited M $20 Value Packs aren't available to new customers :(
    https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans/m-value-pack/
    Discontinued plan
"Our M Value Pack was discontinued 13th September 2017, but some of our customers may wish to continue purchasing this plan if they are eligible. If you purchased this plan previously, you will continue to see it as a recharge option. If you have auto rechare set on your service, we will continue to recharge you to this pack until you disable auto recharge, or purchase a different pack."

    • That really sucks because in other parts of the website it's still listed without mention of it being discontinued!
