      • Siri is hold sleep/wake. Multitasking is swipe up from the "home zone" and hold.

          Siri is hold sleep/wake

How are you supposed to turn off your phone then???

Multitasking is swipe up from the "home zone" and hold

Sounds so cumbersome, glad I don't have to do this.

        • @pennypincher98:

"How are you supposed to turn off your phone then???"

Press once on sleep/wake, don't hold else Siri fires up.

        • @pennypincher98: If you mean turn it off completely, I would guess that you just keep holding longer. Something like 2s for Siri, 5s for power off. (Speculation only)

Here's the video from apple for multitasking

        • @lupiter: There's a right way and a wrong way to get rid of buttons. This is one such example of the latter..

Hold it too long and you'll power off. Hold it too short and you won't activate Siri. Even if there was a Siri button that would be better.. I'm that kind of guy that when I'm thinking, talking or distracted tend to hold buttons for more than I should.
Worst case scenario I have so far is I've accidentally activated Google Now on tap. Not a big deal.

I'm disappointed in the colour selection for the iPhone X. Back to just silver and black? :( I want pink.

    • Suppose you always got the option to skin it.

      • Yeah, I guess. I just don't like those, and I hate cases :/. Always I want thinner and lighter. Also the silver back with the black front on the iPhone X looks bad in the product shots. Hopefully it looks better in the flesh.

        • If you want thinner and light, the X is not it, it is both
          heavier and thicker, lol.

  • +5

Na il wait for the iPhone 7s plus.

    • +1

      LOL…

  • +9

Call me a conspiracy nut but I could swear my iPhone 6S has slowed down recently. Planned obsolescence?

    • Same. 7 here

      • +7

Happen every year when they make new iPhone. Somehow their ios update make older iphone slower

    • I try this line on my SO. But they say it's me getting faster :P

In reality though lots of the problem is websites & apps that are full of garbage. Trackers and stuff like that. :/ You can block some of it in Safari but beware opening Facebook/Twitter/Snapchat those things are so bloated.

    • iPhone 6 user.

      Same ! Last 2 weeks or so ? I swear it's true

    • iOS 11? Surely that would slow down a 6 to the point of replacing

    • Ofcourse. They want you to buy a new phone.

    • +1

Dont know how legit but an interesting read

  • +1

Heck no. Happy with my note 5. And waiting for note 9 next year

  • Everything that was expected was leaked so was no real surprise factor. Decided against it until price drops.

  • +3

I was all in until I saw the price. I was expecting it to be expensive, but it just cut me deep. You can get a Macbook Pro or an iMac for $1899 (just $70 more than the 256GB model iPhone X).

    • +2

And you can get 10% off the mac regularly. iPhone not so much.

    • Different use cases though.

  • +3

Glass back panel on iPhone 8 with water resistance? Really? Cause glass won't be slippery on wet hand when you get out of a pool? Sometimes I really think Apple designers don't use common sense. Or they just want to make the phone as fragile as possible so that people will pay for AppleCare.

And if you get iPhone X, you are practically paying a lot of money, for 10 months, before they announce the new model again.

    • Its water resistant. Not water proof. Theres a difference. The Samsung galaxy is however waterproof

      • +7

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S8, are rated at IP68, it means they will survive, in 1.5m depth of water, for 30 minutes.
iPhone 7 and 8, are rated at IP67, it means they will survive, in 1.0m depth of water, for 30 minutes.

To have waterproof certification, the device needs to be able to resist water intrusion, regardless of pressure it encounter, say Mariana Trench for example.

        https://www.cnet.com/au/how-to/water-dust-resistance-ratings…

        • Good pickup. During the keynote this morning they said it was resistant but not proof which is why i said that. My mistake

        • +1

          @k-rokfm:
Wow! You stayed up for the keynote!! Good one :)

      • -3

Samsung Watch IP68, Apple Watch IP67
Apple Watch fares better in independent water immersion tests.
        No surprise

        • +1

          Um what?

Samsung Watch IP68, Apple Watch IP67
Apple Watch fares better in independent water immersion tests.
          No surprise

Also Samsung phones fare better in independent water immersion tests.
          No surprise

        • -3

@k-rokfm: the phone isn’t even available yet to independently test. FMD.
But for Samsung, I guess the water proofing complements the self combustion feature….

        • @yoyomablue:
Looks like we got a fanboy over here

        • @Pyrock: triggered

"Glass back panel on iPhone 8 with water resistance? Really? Cause glass won't be slippery on wet hand when you get out of a pool"

I don't really think the material used for the back really matters. Most people will have it hidden behind a protective case.

    • +1

Isn't any wet material that could be used on a phone(metal, plastic, glass, etc) slippery?

      • Technically yes, but some are less slippery that others.

For example, brushed aluminium are usually less slippery than polished aluminium. Textured plastic are less slippery than smooth plastic. And glass, unless it's textured, it will be slippery.

  • +10

Still trying to get past the logic of this line

the details of the new iPhone X (pronounced “10”)

If you want it pronounced as 10, call it 10. If you want it pronounced as X, call it X.

    • +1

They're using the Roman numeral for the number 10, just as they did for the Macintosh operating system for 15 years.

      • +10

Yep, but no one said "oh ess ten". It was always OSX (ex).

iPhone 9 will run Windows 9. You heard it here first.

        • +1

It will probably become commonly known and pronounced as iPhone X (eks).

It's such quirks that drive the image of Apple.

        • I just had a look at some Apple keynotes on youtube. They pronounced it as OS 'ten' even if it's commonly known as 'eks.'

      • Oh I see now, how stupid of me lol!

But what happens when the iPhone 10 is released? Will the old one then be called iPhone X?

        • +5

It's clever marketing to appeal to hipsters so they can go around correcting people on the proper pronunciation.

        • +1

probably dropping the regular iphone naming convention. Next iphone is gonna be called iPhone X2.

        • @bao28: the Ten Two?

    • +6

They pulled a Microsoft. Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. NO NINE FOR U!

      • +2

Why did 10 eat 9? Because you're supposed to have 3 squared meals a day.

      • There is no nine because seven ate nine, that's also why six is afraid of seven.

    • they are trying to save the 10 for the iPhone coming out 2 years down the road. :)

    • It's odd too because the "X" in Mac OSX was always called X. The Mac OSX line started after Mac OS 9. Meet the new iPhone X.2

  • +1

I just found out the new iphones have fast charging. Maybe that's worth the extra couple hundred for 8.

    Fast-charge–capable:
    Up to 50% charge in 30 minutes12

  • +8

I see apples yearly release of old technology is upon us.

    • -2

Looks pretty high tech to me. What did you expect, a built in tricorder?

      • +10

Sure if you compare to the iphone 7 maybe but compared to the latest android phones it's just implementing tech that we had for years.

        • -6

Well not really. The Samsung S8 is seen as the apex of android phones and the iPhone X matches it spec for spec. The iPhone probably be faster and work a little better in terms of things like the facial recognition, but is that worth almost $700-1000 more? I don't think so.

        • +7

@Burnertoasty: Wireless charging Android had it first
fast charging android had it first.
bezel less display android has it first.
Hevc support android already has it.
just a few things ive seen i haven't looked though everything properly.

It's good they finally caught up mostly but catching up isnt an upgrade just cause you've been slacking for years isnt an upgrade imo it's just playing catch up and as you said it certainly isnt worth $1579 god damn dollars.

        • +10

@Burnertoasty:Cant come up with a decent response so you decide to insult peoples spelling.

          Welcome to my blocked list.

        • -3

@Axelstrife: On your blocked list. Whatever will I do? I guess I'll have to cry myself to sleep tonight.

        • -2

@Axelstrife: It's amazing that your response to a comment like this still lacks correct punctuation, champion.

  • I don't know about you youngsters, maybe you're used to it, but I find the experience of doing anything on a smartphone, even an IPhone, incredibly second rate even compared to the 8yo craplap with a 1.5 ratpower cpu I am writing this on- using this site for example.

    • Well to be fair, this site isn't optimized for mobile usage. But i get what ur saying.

    • I get it too, however I'm bias as I have a old laptop that I'm upgrading for this purpose….

  • +2

The X seems like an interesting phone but I really hate the cutout at the top. I would have preferred one uniform bezel across the top like the S8/S8+.

The price completely kills any interest for me though.

    • +1

I personally think the top is arguably the only innovation apple has had in a loooong time. Great for seeing time and battery left, yet doesn't take up any of the screen! If it doesn't show percentage though…

I agree. I'm not interested in iPhones at the best of times and this can work out more expensive than a Note 8. I can get so much more stuff with $1500 than just a new phone.

      • I just think it looks half assed, especially when compared with the slew of recent Android flagships with barely any bezel.

        https://imgur.com/3yjtMOf

It's flat out more expensive. Note 8 RRP is $1499 and can be had cheaper. iPhone X starts at $1579 and good luck getting a deal.

        • Yes it's flat out expensive, but that's apples whole point isn't it?? Make kids work 3 jobs just so they can pay for the latest crapple product..

      • +1

I personally think the top is arguably the only innovation apple has had in a loooong time. Great for seeing time and battery left, yet doesn't take up any of the screen!

Have a look at this video and skip to 4:40.

That black cutout literally cuts out part of the video you are watching. And if your app has UI on the side where that bezel covers, too bad. The apps treat it as though the cutout isn't there.

    • +1

LGV30 has even slimmer bezels, when people compare phones why do they go straight to samsung? there are better android phones / examples out there.

      • Maybe because the V30 has not been released yet, nobody has one, so no one talks about it because no one sees them anywhere.

  • +2

Seem like a race between Samsung and Apple to see who can sell a phone for the highest price, iphone X looks nice but not $1500+ nice

  • +3

Man, I was guessing they wouldn't go over 1.6k AUD, i was wrong, 1.8k AUD.

    Top kek.

Facial recognition didn't work straight up as well, Craig.F had to wipe his face of sweat/makeup for it to work. LOL.

Will have to wait till Oct 12th for pixel event, and Oct 31 for Microsoft surface event and see what i want to spend my money on.

    • +2

Actually it did work, the first phone hadn’t been unlocked by passcode

      • -1

        Nope.

It asked for the pin code because Face Id failed multiple times leading it to lock the function and asked the pin to reactivate again.

If the phone has just been restarted it would say "TouchID requires passcode when iphone restarts" Try it on any iPhone.

My work phone is an iPhone.

        • Wrong, it takes 5 failed attempts before requesting passcode

        • Exactly, you don't know how many times it failed before the keynote presentation, and you can tell it wasn't a restart because it didn't state it… You just proved my point.

        • @jerjergege: Apple just explained why it didn’t unlock - it had been used by the event set up team prior. So by rejecting their faces, it actually demonstrates it works.

          https://finance.yahoo.com/news/really-happened-apples-face-i…

        • -1

It asked for the pin code because Face Id failed multiple times leading it to lock the function and asked the pin to reactivate again.

Well there ya go, i was right, it failed, just that it failed a different way because it was the wrong user and therefore asked to input the pin.

    • +3

To unlock the phone, you need to swipe your face twice. We all just need to get used to it.

  • +1

I'm not too sure about Face ID. I don't think it would work through sunglasses. I was watching a video of it where the Face ID was set to their friend. If you just open it and face the phone towards the friend, it would unlock. That seems like a bit of a security flaw. At least with Touch ID, you had to press the button yourself. With this, anyone can just point the phone towards you and unlock the phone.

I'm not sure how elegant swiping up to reach home is. What if it's a game and you keep swiping up by accident? I'm assuming it's force sensitive, but could still see it being accidentally triggered.

It would have been nice to see the phone have a solution like the Pixel/Samsung where they still have fingerprint unlock at the back of the phone.

    • +3

Yep, can't believe they removed Touch ID from the iphone X.

      • +1

There's no home button, so no fingerprint scanner.

        • +2

          Yep, it's a mistake imo.

        • @ozhunter: They wanted less bezel because it's the current trend.

Both Apple and Samsung have been rumored for a while now to be working on finger print scanner on the screen instead of a button but both have not been able to produce it.

        • @lostn:

Other manufacturers have small bezels too and still kept the fingerprint scanner. Until they can implement it under the screen, they should keep it.

        • @lostn:
I believe its something to do with a limitation of OLED screens. I heard it was able to be done with the old LED screens, but obviously no one wants those anymore.

  • +3

Huge Apple fanboy here, but not blown away by the X or the price. Seriously considering swapping sides and getting on w of those OnePlus or Xiaomis instead. I will wait to see what phone plans Telstra releases, but if they don't throw some serious incentives my way, like they did when I got the 6 Plus, I'll be paying cash on a Chinese android phone and riding the discount mobile provider data plan wave. The X is basically the same as a Samsung S8. I can't see a real difference.

    • +2

The difference is one thing $$$$$$$$$

    • -7

The question you have to also ask is whether it is worth switching from iOS to Android. Is it worth saving $500 for a relatively clunky OS?

      • +4

What's clunky about stock (or near stock on the oneplus) android vs IOs?

      • +3

Android is pretty much on par with iOS these days. Used to be clunky, not anymore.

      • +2

You do realise that upcoming ios 11 is copying many features from Android? I'm an iphone 7 plus user but considering to switch to android soon. iPhone X screen is also a copy of essential phone and xiaomi. If I really need to use ios simply because i like the OS, i would chooose the cheapest iphone possible that can run latest ios.

    • u should consider 7+. Price should drop to around 600~700 very soon.

      • Nah, why would I when I can get a newer better Samsung for the same money?

        • well i thought u would prefer to stay on iOS. If not, go android I guess.

        • @EnterTheShiftKey: I have android tablets and they are fine. The one thing that keeps me with Apple is the ability to go into the Apple Store and get a replacement phone or repair done on the spot. That's the Apple difference.
