this is actually not too bad. states $149 p.a so looks like its not for 1st year only.

Amex usually charges $395 for their platinum card which includes a free flight.

    • $149 is the ongoing annual fee, not once off. I rang to check.

      • +2

Yes, p.a. means recurring yearly, obviously…

    • +1

Kind of. Amex Platinum now has 3 tiers. Platinum Edge, Platinum Reserve and Platinum Charge. Existing 'Platinum Credit card' members are migrated over to Platinum Reserve which has extra benefits over Platinum Edge. So old Amex platinum= new Amex Platinum Reserve. The fee is still the same. This card basically has most of the benefits of the old Platinum for $149.

    • Yeah for those already on that $395 (or $295) Platinum card they are moved to Platinum Reserve. Their options are explained here http://perthhacks.blogspot.com/2010/10/old-cacpa-platinum-is…

  • i honestly dont think this is a bargain. you can get cheaper platinum master and visa cards which are more widely accepted

    • +4

Well could you please point me to one that has all the same benefits as this one because I'll go for that if it's cheaper than the $149 AMEX one. I'm keen to sign up on one of these sort of cards.

  • At least with the Amex platinum $395 or $295 through a professional association ie E.A you can choose to fly return to bali or NZ or choose a free hotel stay where as the American Express Platinum Edge card offers 1 domestic virgin blue return flight only per year. The DJ amex card has basically the same benifits as the Amex edge card but with no flights and has a lower annual fee $99. BTW Woolies just released a new rewards Qantas credit card issued by HSBC with 16,000 ff bonus points if you sign up by 31 jan 2011 but its has a $89 annual fee. only if the first year fee for both cards was waived then id be more tempted to apply.

    • Does the DJ card offer triple points at supermarkets? My supermarket bills would easily be $15,000 annually which equates to 45,000 points, which equates to atleast $400 worth in Coles vouchers.

Edit: Yes DJ card has 3 points per dollar. But DJ supplementary card is only free for the first year then $29 yearly afterwards.

    • "you can choose to fly return to bali or NZ"

      I dont know about that?
Do you have that option? I am guessing you would have to pay out of pocket

      • No, you don't have to pay out of pocket, although it's only Perth-Bali and I think Sydney-NZ that's included as the complimentary flight.

        • You pay additional $250 for the benefit of Bali or NZ option (difference between $395 for the ordinary Amex Plat CC and $149 for Amex Edge).

which credit co amex visa or master?

  • +2

Do they give you some shit return flight to some place woop woop and at 3am in the morning of a wednesday?

  • On the old Platinum I used to have the pick of pretty much any Qantas domestic flight I wanted. I never flew around public holidays or weekends though so I'm not sure if they are available. Amex changed their flight provider to Virgin last year and I haven't tried booking on them yet. I took the free hotel this year.

  • Thanks for the post. Just applied.

    With this program.

How much points is a 100 dollars coles/wollies voucher? No gueses please, exact number.

    Cheers.

(i have an Amex through CBA and if the benefits are better then ill switch)

    • 13,500 points. How many CBA points you need to redeem for the same value gift card? Do you get 1 CBA point for every $1 spent?

      • +1

CBA Gold = a Gold MasterCard and a Gold Amex for 1 fee.

Gold MasterCard 1 point for every $1
Gold AMEX 2 points for every $1.

You can redeem a $100 pre-paid MasterCard for 16,700 points.

If you use your Amex card, that means $8350.

For Platinum, Amex gives you 3 reward points per dollar.

I find having both Amex & MC is the best way to go.

        • True. It depends on the amount of monthly spend. I don't spend that much and do not have the opportunity to place business expenses on my personal card to ramp up my points earning capacity. Hence I rely on the regular Amex promotions that are only applicable for Amex issued cards (not bank issued Amex cards). For example, the current promotion gives you 250 bonus points for every $50 charged to the card, up to a maximum bonus points of 25,000. That's effectively 27,000 points for $2,000 spent. Another good promotion that they had a while back was 5,000 bonus points for every 5 transactions regardless of the amount. That was a really good one. And my Amex card is free annually.

I have the ANZ Rewards Gold:
      AMEX $1 = 3pts
      Visa $1 = $1.5
$100 Visa prepaid card cashback = 21,375 pts

So with the AMEX, that's only $7,125. Plus, at the time we got it, they had a "double points" offer, so for three months after activation, we were getting 6pts on the AMEX!

I also have the AMEX Platinum Reserve…but I'd cancel it if they haven't been waiving the annual fee.

      • they waived your $395 fee??? not bad! how much do u spend on the card per month on average? they never offered to waive the fee for me :(

  • There's currently the 250 bonus points offer for every $20 spent for some Amex cardholders including myself. I don't see myself using the Amex Plat Edge card anytime soon if I apply for it now as the bonus point offer only ends in 31 Dec 10. I want to take avantage of the Amex Plat Edge 20,000 points offer by spending $500 in the first two months, so I'll have to wait until end of Dec before applying for this card. This is a good deal no doubt. I'm also considering another good Amex deal - the Amex Plat charge card with $900 annual fee but you get 75,000 points if you spend $500 in the first two months. The Amex Plat charge card also comes with free Amex Plat credit card that offers 1 free Qantas domestic return flight every year. Hmm…

    • $900.00 is so expensive, but I've had a look through the benefits, and it's worth it I think.
But for those interested, you have to earn a minimum of $100K a year.

    • If you're eligible, can afford it and do a bit of traveling, then the Plat Charge card is completely worth it.
The benefits that go along with simply going overseas once or twice a year (or with family), will far outway the cost. Plus you get the little additions such as the best table at certain restaurants and access to certain events that others don't is a nice touch.
I would say this is their best value card providing you use the benefits (as with most things), as it can end up SAVING you money.
OR you can wait until you're invited to become one of their Centurion members with the Titanium (yes that's the material it's made from) Card, for a small fee of $4300 per year of course :S

    • can['t find much info on the charge card + free plat cc w/ free qantas dom flights that you are talking about.. did you have the link?

      • Can't find it myself either, perhaps call Amex to confirm?

      • Yeah they don't tend to advertise their higher end cards. The website is www.americanexpress.com.au/platinum or you could follow the above link then look at all cards and select the platinum charge that way.

    • can you shed more lights on the 'Amex Plat Edge 20,000 points offer by spending $500 in the first two months'? I'm thinking of applying for this one but would wait for the 20,000 points if it's coming. Thanks.

      • It's T&C #4 in the offer website (go to the link provided above for this offer).

    • +1

My new plat edge card arrived today and rang Amex and they said I would still get the 250 points per $20 that I had registered for. Happy about that:)

  • I don't fly domestic much but the value here is obviously if you spend/travel a lot. Travel insurance is probably worth at least $100-200 every time you take a decent trip overseas?

  • I noticed when I was flying through KL that some Platinum American Express Cards gave you free entrance to their premium lounges. Anyone know if this card will work with that?

    • +1

      No this one doesn't.

    • I think only the Plat charge card comes with Priority Pass that gives you access to lounges at selected locations around the world.

      • The Plat Charge and the sister card to this one, the Plat Reserve both get free Priority Pass membership.

        • free membership but only 2 free visits per year which cost US$27 per person and no free guests

Citi Select / Visa Signature has free membership with unlimited visits for cardholder and 1 guest

it costs $700/yr and is in some ways better than Amex Plat Charge

LOL @ complimentary insurance. the free flight is cool but I would never rely on a credit card for insurance of any kind. Has anyone read their terms and conditions on there about that. It practically wants to deny you any form of assistance whether your overseas or domestic. trust me you dont want to be stuck during an earthquake trying to rely on getting help with these type of cards.

otherwise if your in it for the free flight, thats pretty tempting as I do fly home yearly (depending if its a choice):P

    • Haha I think if you look at terms and conditions on insurance of ANY kind, you'll find that the majority of it reads how they will weasel their way out of it at any given opportunity. I wouldn't rely on insurance at all in times of desperate need.
Insurance and Stata companies = the biggest money making schemes out there!

    • +1

Actually, I have read the terms and conditions of the Amex Platinum Charge card travelinsurance. It's actaully quite good. You and your family and any supplementary cardholders are automatically covered whether you put your flights and travel expenses on the card or not. I know someone who claimed Dental expenses while on holiday in the US (expensive health care) and had no problems redeeming a claim. See more here: https://www.iplatinum.americanexpress.com/prospect/australia…

      • -1

I am not sure you are right here. As far as I know, you have to pay for your flights/cruise by AMEX card to be covered by their travel insurance.
As about the actual cover - it's no better or worse than any other travel insurance

        • +2

I think if you have Amex Plat credit card you need to charge your travel costs to the card. But if you have Amex Plat charge card, you don't have to. You are automatically covered, regardless of the method of payment.

    • I haven't made any claims myself but there are many positive outcomes experienced by other cardholders as discussed in other forums. Just Google to read some of them.

  • All this shimozzle would be $149 - $80 for the Ascent program enrollment = $69 p.a. no?

    • Could you enlighten us on this ascent program please? :)

      • +1

The Ascent program gets you more points per dollar with the option to transfer these points to an Airline Partner.
Alternatively there's the Choices program that earns you less points per dollar and you can't transfer your points to an airline partner, and for those reasons it's a cheaper program than Ascent.

        • +1

Correct, but with this card they automatically put you in Ascent. Given that the program usually costs $80 p.a. for the card and here you do not have to pay for it - this would mean that $149 p.a. card fee - Ascet $80 p.a. = $ 69 p.a. for the card - looks like it at least.

          I have 2 AMEX cards:

          1) Green Corporate - have to pay for Ascent program on the yearly basis $80 p.a., no annual fee.

          2) Gold Australian Computer Society coBranded - no annual fee, and was an option to have one of the programs added either Ascent or Qantas with no fee for life.
          http://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=show&conID=acsgoldcc - For Geeks only though :)

  • I've got a Qantas Earth Gold Amex & Mastercard (bundled). Wonder if this would be a better deal for me?
If so, wonder if I can just get the Amex card converted to the Platinum Edge. Anyone have any ideas or advice?

  • I have one of those CPA/CA/Engineering cards - American Express Platinum now apparently called Platinum Reserve, but not sure what to do. Unlike other cards, when you try to cancel this card, they are more than willing to do it (ie no real bargaining from my experience, they don't offer 1 year waiver of fees for example).

As a result of the change to the program.. now that we are "Reserve":

East coast Reserve card people get 1 extra international destination - NZ
West coast Reserve card people get 1 extra international destination - Bali
We also get complimentary entry into VIP lounges but not sure where they are

Anyone in this situation, considering move to Edge? Unless you want to go to NZ or Bali, its not worth the extra 2x more annual fee

    • I have the Platinum, but not through those associations. They've waived my annual fee for the 2nd year in a row now, but I'll be cancelling it next year anyway. I find that I don't use the benefits, anyway…and I find the rewards rate better on other cards.

      • How exactly did you manage to get them to waive your annual fees? like two years in a row???
        mind sharing your experiences? :)

    • +1

Lounges access you will be looking at PriorityPass - this is what they are using www.prioritypass.com as an add-on to pretty much every Platinum card - or used to at least before the "new Platinum" got out. In Oz - lounges you can use with this card are "THE LOUNGE" by VirginBlue on domestic flights and if you are travelling from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport on international flight you would have access to "UNITED RED CARPET CLUB" lounge as well.

  • I find myself spending more with a credit card. Haha. I got this offer in the mail last week.

Jokes aside, any idea if there are limitations on the flights? IE: can we all just get thus for the Melbourne to Perth return ticket?

    • you call up and they will tell you what flights are available for booking.. there are quite a lot of flights and not as few seats as Qantas FF

  • Quite an eye opening thread :)

  • It's a shame an affiliate link was used. Please read the rules when posting deals. The next person to sneak their affiliate link in may not get off so easily.

    • What's an affiliate link? Exactly what have I done wrong? I have not tried to sneak in any extra link. Whatever has happened, and I don't understand what has happened, must have been an accident.

      • To quote the mod "Mod: Removed affiliate link"

This has been happening quite a few times, especially with some razer promo that was happening earlier (that wasn't you, just showcasing an example). The rules have some info about affiliate linking IIRC which you can read up on.

  • Check out the ANZ platinum card. They recently got rid of gold cards and now you can get a platinum easily. If you spend 20k a year on it its free (otherwise 99 p.a.).
Gives you a number of benefits including free travel insurance and travel medical coverage (6 months) etc.

    • drprox isnt the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum Total annual fee $295? its good to hear gold ff card is now upgraded to platinum. but is it true if you spend 20k a year on it its free? do you need to ask for it or is it automatically waived? is it for existing cff card holders only? i have the standard ff card for $49 /year as an existing old customer. i wonder what will happen to the annual fee if i upgrade to the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum caed.?

      http://www.anz.com/personal/credit-cards/compare-cards/plati…
the only way i know off to get it waived is if you were a private wealth customer but i think u need 1 mil in assets or loans with anz?

      • Hi coolsteps,

to clarify, my existing gold card was not a ff card, neither is the platinum that has replaced it. The fee waiver for $20k spend doesn't appear to be for existing customers only as i have a standard pds and booklet that indicates the fee waiver. Note: i believe the standard fee for this card is $195. I can't locate the non ff card on the ANZ website so assume this is coming. Having worked there for a while I know things sometimes take a while at the Bank's end :P

        • thanks drprox its good to have insider knowledge. do you know what the minimum spend or requirements are to qualify to have the annual fee waived for other anz cc like the standard ff card when you call up?. anyways i found the info on their new card offer. though i don't think you get any reward points with the new ANZ platinum card. the Annual account fee 87/$0. free first year and later years if you spend 20k+ . more info at http://www.anz.com/personal/credit-cards/compare-cards/plati…
though i think bankwest zero platinum card is a better option with similar benefits but with no annual fee and no minimum spend required.

    • ANZ Platinum and ANZ Rewards Platinum seem to be available only for existing Gold customers as a replacement (since Gold no longer exists).

      http://www.anz.com/personal/credit-cards/existing-card-holde…

      • confirm.. got the letter from ANZ last week under breakfree package

  • Now when you try to cancel your existing Platinum Reserve Card, they may offer you $150 credit to keep your card http://perthhacks.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-avoid-credit-c…

Good idea if you intend to use the free international return flight and want to try out the free lounge access :)
