norton sucks so much i won't even use it if you paid me $79 + $5 installation fee :)

    • if Norton paid me $5 I'd do it, but uninstall it once they've paid me :)

    • Why comment on something that you have not used, this new 2011 edition has just been released and I doubt very much you have reviewed it.

      • i've used the 2006 and 2010 version. enough to judge future performance from past performance.

        • As much as you are entitled to your opinion, I think comparing current product with 4 yr old version is unfair.

If everyone go by that no-one would have bought Win7 judging the performance of Vista!

        • errr…tanuj

im actually comparing it with last years version (2010) AND (2006) version.

          what's unfair?

you can't really compare windows os with norton..norton has a history of failures while microsoft only screwed up with vista

    Norton is horrible

The extra RAM thats included is in order for Norton to run on your system :P

    • right on!

    • Friends don't let friends buy Norton, even if they're friends you don't know from the Internets.

  • Your site said:
Please note this is a OEM bundle and will ship with included hardware as per OEM license.

OEM packs are to be supplied only with a new hardware. Then why everyone sells the OEM packs independently.

  • No deal - it is $44 at Dick Smith without the RAM

If you don't want the RAM, we sell it for $30 for just Norton. Please have a look at our website software list.

And if you look at the dick smith website text - its says ONLY available with new pc or laptop.

  • i got my 3 user pack (NON-OEM) NIS2011 without the ram for $20 from HN a couple of weeks ago, which i thought was a very good deal. i dont know how much the ram is worth though, but i won't be needing it.

    • That is an exceptional deal you got mate. What is HN?

      • Harvey Norman

    • That was the best deal of the year for norton.

  • People still use anti-virus? wth?

    • i install it for the sake of my parents who r not tech savvy/unware of the dangers using the net

      • you would be surprised at the amount of legitimate forums, blogs and online stores get compromised on a daily basis. drive by downloads are a common place on the net these days and identity theft is a serious problem. this is not simply an antivirus product it is an internet security package, which does help protect you from a lot of different types of attacks.

Regardless of the performance of this specific piece of software, Norton have demonstrated themselves to be an unethical company. Their uninstallers do not work — in my mind this qualifies them as malware (especially with pre-install deals with Sony, Asus et al).

The mentality behind the design of the product significantly impacts the product outcome. This is why open-source software can sometimes exceed the speed and reliability of proprietary software — it is designed to achieve a genuine result for the citizen.

Proprietary software is good when it seeks to serve the citizen — not to incorporate ulterior and/or criminal design objectives that bloat its size and ramprint, and compromise its ability to perform its stated task.

If it is designed to slow down your computer, hassle you, take up room and memory, install itself and sundry code, hide out in the recesses of your hard drive, send your usage data to some nest of sociopaths, then it should be labelled accordingly.

Now Norton are just one of many, and maybe Norton have turned a new leaf, but if that's the case they've got to prove themselves, and lose the brand name — it is a massive liability.

    • From a non ethical point of view, I have been using norton 360 v4 since it came out, got a pretty sweet 3 licence deal cheap. I can say working in the IT industry and providing support for family on the side (as much as I want to wear a "no i will not fix your computer" shirt), the recent norton products perform really good, I also got norton internet security 2011 for a friend's netbook. In my experience they all have a much smaller footprint than previously and are not resource intensive since they now have smart scan options (not scanning files that have not been changed since previous scan for example), which also happens only when the computer is idle.

Though the one catch I should mention is the subscription costs are a lot higher than what you pay for a retail pack (though it does let you keep upgrading to the latest versions at all times).

So instead I am now shifting to Kaspersky Internet security. You will get the same quality of protection and good performance for a lot less:

      http://www.kaspersky.com/au/kaspersky_internet_security

Even without any specials you can get a 2 year licence for 80 bucks.

      • Rep Tanuj said, one year for 30 bucks for Norton. so dont you think, 30* 2 = 60 is much lesser than the kaspersky?.
I was using kaspersky earlier for 2 years and current version of norton 11 is better than kaspersky.
Norton keep selling total security deals time to time quite cheap. so grab a bargain before your antivirus expires.

Edit> I talked to norton specialist @ harvey norman, Auburn and the guy said, you can keep the additional norton product key for later use and even can use it after one year. So buying 2 product key, when they are super cheap ( like 20 dollars for one year subscription) can save you for expensive subscriptions.
Secondly, best way IMO to get it working is to install the demo version first online and then after it expires, install your key.
