        I think not.

        • +6

          Look at the Jetstar website,
In the the From it has
          Melbourne (all airports)
          Melbourne (Tullamarine)
          Melbourne (Avalon)

Now you can remove your neg

        • @supabrudda: Avalon is to Melbourne as Ipswich is to Brisbane…..a distant relative

        • -1

          @supabrudda:

Okay, but the description of this bargain says "Departing Melbourne (Avalon)". A flight which takes off at Avalon is not departing "Melbourne", no matter what way you look at it.

        • @MrZ: Well according to Jetstar it is. Take it up with them, or Linsey Fox.

You obviously haven't travelled by air outside of Oz.
Off the top of head, London, Paris, Oslo, Stockholm, New York, Bangkok all have airports a lot further away from the CBD then Avalon is (it's only 50km!)

and the new Badgerys Creek airport is also ~50kms away from Sydney CBD. Do you reckon it's going to be called a Sydney airport?

        • @rayski57: yep and if they plonked an airport there (which they may have to in 50yrs as the current one will likely be under water) Of course it'd be called Brisbane (Ipswich) airport.

Like Avalon to Melburne, it'd probbaly be quicker to get to for many Brizzos.

        • @supabrudda: The difference is that domestic airports tend to be named as the city they're in, not the nearest capital city unlike International airport (which international tourists wouldn't recognise by their true name)

        • @supabrudda: Nope, Avalon's not convenient for most (almost all) Melb. residents to access unless you live on the west side of the Westgate bridge.
Even worse for BrisVegans, they'd have to fight traffic most of the way to get to Ipswich and then out to wherever they'd plonk an airport that services commercial flights.

        • -1

          @rayski57: Many != most.

        • -1

@rayski57: not travelled much either eh? EU countries are like Australian states. Lots of those "city" (but in the middle of whoopwhoop) airports are used by intra-euro low cost airlines.

Anyway if you have an issue with it being called Melb (valon) then take it up with Linsey or Jetstar.

And they are planning to make Avalon an international airport. They announced it as part of the 2013 masterplan fo the airport. I believe they were trying to fast tack it back then to entice AirAsia & Scoot to use it. but they couldn't grease the state & federal govt wheels in time.

        • @supabrudda: Sorry to disappoint you, but I have travelled a lot.
In fact probably more than most people here as I used to extensively travel nationally and internationally with work when I was employed by a multi-national technology company.
I was specifically referring to domestic travel in Oz and how it is the norm to name domestic (or primarily so) airports the same as city they're located in.
Melbourne Airport (located in the Melbourne suburb of Tullamarine) will often have the subtext of Tullamarine to differentiate itself from the old Essendon Airport nearby.

As for Avalon Airport (not Melbourne (Avalon)), it used to be used for commercial pilot training and big bird maintenance. It was due to be used by some of the low-cost Chinese airlines (think Air China West/East/South whatever), but having absolutely no interest in using them, I didn't follow the news to know if this eventuated or not.

        • @rayski57: Don't worry you're not disappointing me. Well maybe a bit in that you've travelled extensively but didn't realise that big cities often have multiple airports, some not close at all to the city they call home & service.

Have a look at the Melbourne planning map for 2050
          http://www.planmelbourne.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0…

It's closer to metro Melb then Geelong.

But if you have travelled around Europe you'd know that Luton & Gatwick, both designated London airports, most traffic is intra-EU, but they're way out of London. Even been to Beauvais? It's designated a Paris airport & it's 150km from Paris. EVer been to Torp, it's a Oslo designated airport, but is 110km from Oslo. Ever been to Västerås? It's a designated Stockholm airport, yet is 100km from Stockholm. Ever been to Newark? It's not even in the same state of NYC, but it's called a New York airport. Flying for business means you probably never flew budget airlines and aren't aware how common this is.

As for Oz, how many cities have two airports, used by the big 4 carriers within 50kms of the city? They're named after the city or town they serve. Avalon was & is planned to service Melbourne. Badgers Creek is to serve Sydney and is being called Sydney's second airport, even though it's the same distance as Ipswich is from Brizzy or Avalon is from Melbourne.

        • All of the foreign airports you mentioned are within the "metropolitan area" of the respective cities, though. Avalon Airport is not within the Melbourne Metro Area.

        • @supabrudda:

I haven't traveled much, no, but from what I can find online:

Paris (Charle De Gaulle) airport is well within the Paris metro area. It's 35km from Paris CBD, compared with 55km for Avalon. Both of Bangkok's airports are also less than 35km from the city centre, and are both within the metro area. Only Oslo and Stockholm seem to be comparable, as their airports are not in the metro area. But distance wise, they are both closer to their respective cities than Avalon is to Melbourne.

        • @supabrudda: you have to have the last say don't you. Give it a rest.
No point making a viable comment when you have a different viewpoint and wish to push it.
          Whatever

    • +2

It's not within metro Melbourne but it's an airport that services Melbourne, hence why it's called Melbourne (Avalon).

      • -4

Correct, but it also services a lot of other areas, not just Melbourne. Saying that the flight departs Geelong would be much more accurate, since it's closer to that city than it is to Melbourne.

        • You are right, however I think the intent is for it to help passengers trying to get to Melbourne. The fact that it services a lot of other areas is just the logical placement of the airport.

It's the same as all the London airports. There are Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick, Stansted, Southend and City. Only City (and some would argue Heathrow) is actually in Metropolitan London, but they're all called London with the town name in brackets. Most are closer to other satellite towns, but ultimately they service Metropolitan London, so are named to aid passengers.

          https://cdn.londonandpartners.com/visit/general-london/trans…

    • With your logic, I guess Tullamarine is not " Melbourne" either.

  • +1

Nice work Op! I was just thinking about a Jan hol. I can'tr believe how cheap it is to get to the Rock.

    • It's going to be so bloody hot though…

  • Not interested in a flight but +1 for the effort

  • Any flights discount next month OP ?

    • +2

There are heaps, I just cleaned up on 8 flight. Serious savings as a commuter flyer…

      • Thx

  • Awesome, thanks for this. I've never flown Jetstar before however relatives have and can vouch for it. For anyone questioning as I was, yes there are extra fees. The standard flight includes 7kg of carry on baggage, you then pay extras for checked baggage (we chose 20kg each way), you also pay for choosing to sit together ($7.00 each for each way) and extra if you want insurance for baggage. Total fee for return flights from Perth to Gold Coast for 2 was $600; awesome, thanks :-)

you could have flown Virgin/Qantas with that price if you buy the free flights on credit cards being sold at the classified section

      • Great if you've got a credit card….
