Now That The eBay Sale Is over

As per the title, What did you end up buying, if anything at all.
I had to take myself away from my computer for the last few hours to help myself :/

So.. What did you pick up?

    nothing

      I 2nd this

    • +7

      same… nothing

    • +11

Yeah, I looked at a few things, could not get to the $75 minimum, then found the things I had in my cart were half the price on Amazon …. decided to delay buying until Amazon gets here and offers a REAL discount.

      • +2

Hi do u have things in your cart on Amazon Australia ?

      • -1

Hi those things in Amazon cart do you ?

    • +7

NOTHING - WASTE OF TIME AGAIN

      • Added an item to my cart earlier before sale (a dryer which was a good buy at approx $250 but was to be better with extra 18% off);
      • Scrolled through things I need to buy, found two other things, but a quick price check found I could get them cheaper elsewhere anyway (another hour or two wasted);
      • Found one thing that was a good buy at $79 delivered (less 18%) just a bit before 10pm;
      • then went to the checkout only to see "a seller has revised the listing…." - the first item, from a major retailer, had 'surprise surprise' been revised to $350!! What a rip off!

So, I removed it from the cart after checking it was in fact now a bad price, and only then realised at checkout that I hadn't hit the min spend because my $79 item was $70 + $9 postage!!! ARGH!?

A quick scramble to buy something for $5 with literally one minute, added something, went to checkout, "CODE HAS EXPIRED!!" 10:01pm on my machine!?

      THEN THE QUESTIONS I ASK:

      • Why end at 10pm, what kind of a crap 18th birthday party that doesn't end at midnight or later (like every other sale)!?
      • Why do sellers still itemise postage prices when it is fixed for all of AU!?
      • Why do major retailers jack up their prices when the sale starts!? Its against consumer law and just pisses customers off!

WHY DID I JUST WASTE 3 HOURS ON ANOTHER EBAY SALE!?

NEVER AGAIN … …. (until next time)

      • +14

Um, it took you 3 hours to buy an item and you left it to the last minute? Don't think the issue here is with ebay lol

        • +4

What kind of self-respecting OzBargainer would not use all available time, every minute, trying to find deals during a sitewide eBay sale? You're not committed zeggie, you'll have to go find another site.

The aim was to deliberately use all the available time to search for things I actually need at a good price (like I am sure most people on here), not just any crap on sale, whilst half-OzB-bloods had given up and gone off watching porn.

Further to that, I had to shop for/with the misses, that takes time! Online window shopping, C'mon!

To clarify, I searched for MANY items (like 20-30+) from my/her shopping list, had already added 1 to my cart, found about 2 that I thought were okay, but then price checked ebay found them not competitive (So why buy it there when I can buy it at a shop down the road or another site for less - that's against my OzB religion)!

So sure, its totally my fault they changed the price between when I added item to the cart and tried to checkout, knowing I had a good 5-10 minutes to complete the check-out process and not even having to think about the min spend as my cart was already over $250 at that time. Yeah, I'm the problem here, I price-jacked myself - Thanks for your feedback. I'll get that problem "checked out" (unlike my f..king items).

        • @MrFrugalSmith: thank you for that novel.

I bought 5 things. Pretty committed. How many items did you purchase?

        • +2

          @zeggie:
I bought 5 things as well.
Ebay sales like this require careful planning beforehand.
Hunt down the items you want.

        • +1

          @zeggie:

I dont think the quantity determines commitment - its how much money you save from purchasing the item elsewhere.

        • @zeggie: Buying a 5 pack of fidget spinners doesn't really compare to trying to furnish a house

        • +1

@cwongtech: That would be fine if I didn't have to work all day beforehand - Hence having to do it during the sale, for which I am being criticized. I am sure I am not the only person on here who spent hours looking for stuff to buy, but not being impressed enough to make 5 purchases.

        • +1

          @MrFrugalSmith:

but not being impressed enough to make 5 purchases.

          That's okay.
Have a hitlist of stuff you want to buy in the future and only purchase when you really need/ebay sale comes around.

        • @cwongtech: That's basically what I did with the dryer, but then the retailer jacked the price up for the eBay sale - that's my main gripe!

        • lol! upvoted lol!

      • Username checks out.

      • It’s not hipster if you have a party till mid night

      • Not sure why you didn’t just buy the item when it was cheaper and pay for it during the promo period. Unless eBay recently changed that…

        • Say what? Can someone please verify if this is possible?!
It would only have helped had I suspected the seller was going to price-jack, as I like to see the final price I am paying before hoping for a future voucher to come along.

I had a similar problem. When I checked out at 9:50pm I had two different currencies. So eBay being eBay made me do two transactions. By the time I reached the second transaction and hit the button to go to paypal it said that the payment was still discounted. When the payment was processed the full amount was charged.

I immediately got onto support which showed it was just on 10pm so I took a screen shot to keep as proof of payment being before 9:59pm.

After a bit of haggling with the support person they agreed to arrange a courtesy credit (refund). I also wrote into support complaining of the discount being applied and not given by the time I reached paypal checkout and received written confirmation of the discount being applied.

Basically if you've made the payment and it's processed and no discount and. It was just on 9:59/10pm send a message to eBay and request a credit of the refund. Be polite with the support people and generally they'll do their best to help.

      • Which dryer and retailer?

    • I bought a garage shelf usually $100-120 range.

    Kogan 55" curved 4k TV

    • Tempted to get one of these, Hope it's smooth sailing for you!

    • +1

Please let us know your experiences.. I am looking into buying a Kogan as well if not an aldi.

      • They're okay for cheap TV's… but the quality and customer service are pretty bad.

Even if you compare the quality of the image from Kogan's 4k TV to a current 1080p model from Samsung/LG/Sony.
Sadly Kogan (and Aldi) is no Vizio.

      • This review (https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/kogan/curved-4k-55-inc…) looks pretty promising, they said it's a great value TV for $799 so $520 is a STEAL.

        • Where is it for $520 atm?

    • I just got my Kogan TV this afternoon. It is good but the sound is little bit small. So I connected it with a creative speaker with the audio cable. However, when I connected it I found I can change the volume and the mute button is not working as well. I'm wondering someone have the same issue?

I sold 1 of my items but the details seem a little off.

    • with the buyer?

      • +1

        Buyer.

eBay name doesn't match whom I'm sending to which is also suspect as its 2 people.
        Address isn't 100%.
PayPal email address seems very generic.

        • +7

I'd go with your gut feeling and pull out.

        • +1

@dylanando: I sell regularly on eBay and often post to a name that's different as to what's on the payment. Often its a parent or partner paying, hence the difference. And people have all sorts of weird email addresses and user names, so I'd never go by that. PayPal's payment confirmation you received should mention whether you're covered by Seller Protection anyway.

What's the buyer's feedback score? And how long have they been a member? I've been selling for years and have yet to be burned or scammed by a buyer. Had a couple where I've had a funny feeling about the buyer, then it's all turned out to be fine.

If you like, PM the buyer's eBay page and I'll have a quick look and see if anything looks suss to me.

        • +1

Sounds like you have never let a mate or something use your ebay account before.

        • @dm01:
Feedback is 3 and an eBay member since 18-Jun-17.

I've been burned as a buyer on PayPal in the past where I only got 1 cent refund.
Not looking forward to potentially having the sale refunded and losing the item as well.

I'll be emailing the PayPal user later today.

          Thanks for all the help.

        • @Crownie: Jump on to the eBay chat and raise your concerns with them as well - they can advise whether there's anything suspicious about the buyer from their end too (they won't be able to tell you exactly what, but they can tell you if something is up). The other week they helped me confirm a connection between two different accounts I was having dealings with - I suspected the two were the same user, and they confirmed that it was.

        • +2

@dm01: Just make sure you send to the Paypal listed address. Not the one that appears on ebay.

        • -1

@dm01: i often order through my account using a different name, different business paypal and business address. nothing fishy.

        • @blaze: Yes i know a lot of people have two accounts - that in itself isn't unusual. In this instance, a seller I'd tried to buy from and after several weeks of being mucked around before I left them a negative feedback, used a second account to end a bunch of my listings (i.e. buy but not pay) as revenge. They obviously thought there was nothing visible to me that could connect the two accounts, but I actually found something, called eBay about it, and they confirmed it was the same person. What the guy doesn't realise is that once the 7 unpaid item disputes finish going through, both his accounts will be locked up from buying for a while.

        • @Crownie:

I have different addresses ebay/paypal but that's because I'm too lazy to update.

When I pay with paypal it gives me the option of 4 addresses I've used to send stuff, work/gf house as well. It also has other people names on the addresses to.

        • @Axelstrife:
I've never, and why exactly would you do that ? Don't they have their ebay account anyway ?

Ram and ssd to pimp my laptop. Really strange that I've bought both with PayPal, but the money hasn't left my account… Better not be an issue, I got the last one of both my items. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

    • Double check the payment method used. eBay seems to be defaulting to my bank account lately, when I select my CC and then enter in a discount code the payment reverts back to bank account. I then need to choose my CC again

      • PayPal, both times. I had to to get the code. Ebay purchase history says paid, my PayPal is linked to my debit card and bank account, so same source. Hmmmmm.

        • EBay seems happy, PayPal seems happy, no change to my bank account though. Maybe it's all free… :)

        • +1

@Robc: If it's a direct debit from your bank account it will happen next day, as opposed to being charged to your debit card. Although the money comes from the same place it is processed differently.

        • @raymond y: Could be a delay in PayPal processing it. I had some payments fail tonight - eBay said it hadn't gone through…PayPal said it hadn't gone through….checked out again…and now I've been charged twice (according to my credit card's transaction listing online). Worst part is PayPal only shows it going through once.

        • @dm01: well I phoned pyapl, they confirmed the two payments, and said "PayPal front the money, it'll be up to five days before it leaves your account" errr….. First time that's happened. Normally moneys gone within minutes. So I'm a bit suspicious, if I'm actually gonna get this stuff.

        • @Robc: that's normal, otherwise there'd be delays in payment processing to sellers

  • +10

I bought $500 of stuff and forget to use the code in checkout. Sigh.

    • +4

i shed a tear for you, so sorry

      • +1

Thanks. It may be along shot but I can try contact eBay to get $90 voucher instead. Let's see.

        • +3

Tell them it wouldn't let you checkout with the code applied to the cart. I was having all sorts of issues (still am), but I got on the chat with eBay CS, he got me to check out at full price but is raising a refund of the 18% through the marketing team. They've been having a bunch of issues with checkout and PayPal tonight because of the sale (I assume) - I've also been on the phone with PayPal CS twice this evening, and they said they've been getting a bunch of calls about it too.

So, as far as you're concerned, you couldn't use the code, you rang eBay, and they said to check out at full price and contact them again for a refund of the discount.

        • +1

@dm01: Hi, thanks for that. I was in chat with eBay and I only have to give subject chat of "issue of applying code" and the person just then help me to get marketing issue the $90 credit back to my paypal.

Be warned though if you buy multiple items, as you only enter 1 item number, they may just see 1 items. If more than 1 you need to tell them it's more than 1.

It's a great day! Thank you eBay!

        • +1

@foxmulder: Did they give a time-frame for the $90 credit to hit your PayPal account?

Last year I had to get credit for a failed promotion code, and they strung me along for weeks before I finally received it.

        • @dm01: Hi they told me 10-15 working days. I will make sure to put reminder to follow up if I don't see the refund.

        • @foxmulder: Yep, same for me.

      • OMG… tragic news.. man what a miss!!

I did that once, contacted eBay support, they said they would fix it up. Took about 4 weeks for the credit to appear in PayPal account but it did arrive.

Not a recent camera, it’s a hasselblad 203fe. Prices for it vary a lot but after the discount it’s the cheapest one I’ve seen by far this year.
