Don't even try to replace jv.

You can buy this Lenovo ThinkCentre M72e (Ivy Bridge) for $132.05 with PINCH5 code. It'll get you Core i3 dual cores (still) but much newer architecture and DDR3 memory.

You should see a very big performance / power efficiency boost going from a 2008 era Core 2 duo to a 2012 era Ivy Bridge.

    • +2

But at the same time you can get a Dell 790 core i5 2nd gen for 7 dollars more which I think should perform better. Was $114 yesterday with the party18 code

      • +1

Correct. Add $70~100 dollars still and you can get 4th gen Haswell, although the sweet spot is around Core i5 2500 series.

        • +1

Haha, add 300 dollars more and you can get yourself a 6th gen core i5. Add in a gt 710 and it will be a great performer for $450.
Desktops are just so cheap in the 2nd hand market

          @BrodenIt:

Add a thousand more dollars and you can get that Mac the original poster said you shouldn’t get!

        • +2

@BrodenIt: Add about 79000 more and you get a high yield investment

        • +9

@brokeunistudent: add $2 more and you can have my wife, the kids and the wife's shitbox Barina.

        • @adrianhughes1998: do I get fries with that?

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Which model Barina? (asking for a friend)

        • +1

@ebenezer7: 1996 three door. No cabriolet on this one babe

I got a pallet of 790SFF i3's with the 2nd Gen Processors that will be $110.40 after the discount code

      http://bulksell.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?SingleList&sell…

      • Throw in the pallet?

        • Pallets are pretty heavy

        • @Calmago: do you even lift Bro?

Windows 7 Pro (upgradable to windows 10 for free)

    ??

    • Yep

      • Must be not official.

        • Official

My bad, you can get a free upgrade if you are a assistive technology user but anyways just contacted the rep if they can offer a free upgrade to windows 10 in this deal as well.

    • +3

It's official. Google "How to Upgrade to Windows 10 for free in 2017"

You can upgrade to Windows 10 for free after turning on Accessibility features in 7. Then install over it. Windows will activate with a genuine digital entitlement.

Also with the way digital entitlement works after Creators Update, Windows license is sticky to your Microsoft Account. That means that if you're ditching an old computer and you're moving to a new one, you can activate an un-activated machine by simply connecting to the net and logging in with online MS account. This is useful for people who are continuously upgrading their systems with new motherboards and CPU's.

The exception is for OEM licenses — OEM licenses can't transfer to new hardware. But in my scenario, I have always had success getting Microsoft to activate OEM license on new hardware via phone call.

    • You can do a fresh install of windows 10 using the windows 7 key. If you have problems activating just contact Microsoft support and they’ll fix it for you.

Just did it a couple of weeks ago on a Dell 9010

Brilliantly useless comment, well done. You got lucky in a bid and therefore rule out anyone buying a similar product via retail.

It's not about luck here mate. It's about persistent and observant. If you're serious about getting one of these 10 years old tech, go look around Gumtree to see its true market value. Plenty offloading these for a lot less, some even free.

  • Worth it for a legitimate Win10 key … that you're actually not using legitimately if you install on another box, but whatever.

    • I'm guessing that they use oem codes. Oem codes can be found for around $5 on ebay.

      • Yes and it's been revealed that those are not legitimate, apparently. Like, not supported by MS at all.

    • Nothing to be fancy for, anyone can get the windows 10 key by installing a pirate copy of windows 7 and turn it to legit upgrade. Sellers also take advantage of this trick too.

  • Moderator deleted another post to combine with this one, but those details haven't been added here yet. So to anyone, there are more options available.

For the same amount of money as the listed HP 800 G2 above in the OP ($399.20 after POWER20), I would say the HP ProDesk 600 G1 with i7 4770 may be a better deal for those looking for higher performance (at the expense of slightly higher power consumption).

The i7-4770 is really only one architecture generation behind (if you dismiss the node transition), and the higher cpu clock helps in closing the gap in single-thread performance (if not out-performing i5), while the available 8-thread will give better multi-thread performance compare to the i5-6500.

  • Does the Optiplex normally include MS Office? I bought a 790 USFF recently and it included Windows 10 Pro and Office 2016.

    • no but a lot of resellers include it

i bought a cheap refurb laptop and it came with the above too

      registered but probably msdn

removed the drive and added an ssd though

Honestly Core2 desktops like these are landfill and given away for free from many companies.

  • Apologies noob question but is the “Onsite warranty till May 2019.” on the ebay G2 listing true?

    • +1

Yes, In the last deal the rep said the hp 800 g2 is still covered by warranty. I suggest you to pm the rep for more info

should be $50, at the most…. JUNK

    • I just took about 30 old Opitplex 740s and 780s to the tip 3 weeks ago.

  • hackintosh

    • Sub $100 qualifies it as a Crapintosh.

I bought a used HP 8300 SFF at the last PTECH20 sale from 3igadget. Died after a week and a new PSU didn't revive it.

    • Did it have warranty?

      • +1

I could return it within 30 days at my own cost for an exchange. Didn't actually look that up (that I recall) until just now.

        • +1

Seller has to cover return costs for item's purchased within 30 days
