    Mini review.

I have been using Bitdefender for my folks for a year or two now, and really like it.

    • It doesn't hog system resources, with very little noticeable difference running the windows and Android clients.

    • It has a web interface available. if they complain that they got a pop up notice, I can check the web. I can also look at their start up processes and remove things after they have installed their 12th toolbar and find it's running slow now.

    • web interface means I can also kick off full scans, optimisations etc.

    • they use the Android app as well, which offers devices tracking for stolen devices and remote wipe.

Before the subscription is up, I get emails offering me cheaper and cheaper prices. I end up paying no more than $50AUD for the full package with 5 devices and 1 year of updates.

    • I been using them for few years as paid product, good product but then I switch to Kaspersky, same features, basic vpn, but cheaper.

Anti-whatever for Android is a joke, just don't install APK's from dodgy sources on versions of Android with known root escalation exploits. (I.e. update your damn OS, don't install unsolicited APK's, and when you do, don't ignore all the warnings.)

Anti-whatever for Windows is also mostly a joke for the same reasons. (However my parents are a fantastic use case for such systems, as I can't be their common sense / pc guardian at all times.)

They are very good at detecting known malware which does nothing on the latest versions of Windows unless you explicitly give them permissions. They are terrible at trying to detect malware that has yet to be classified, i.e. NEW malware. They are incompetent at protecting you against targeted attacks, which are the only ones you should be concerned about if you're even slightly careful about what you execute on your system with administrator privileges.

I do however recommend the use of the FREE included Windows Defender software, because we do sometimes make mistakes, and there are occasionally outbreaks, and WD is more than capable of isolating those cases.

I personally use Virus Total's desktop file uploader to weed out suspect files when I'm downloading from less than reputable sources; it's lightweight and requires zero services, and all it does is send the hashes of files to their server to compare them with existing scanned files to determine whether or not the files are known to be safe or dangerous. (You can submit the file by uploading it if they have no record of the file, and they will run the file under their entire suite of scanners, [which includes Bitdefender] and give you the report, for free.)

  • Not much of a deal if you already have an existing licence, but I will add that BitDefender is an excellent product. I switched to it from F-Secure 2 years ago and found it to be very good - low resource usage, good detection rate, ancillary tools are actually useful.

ps cannot extend - i tried hah

    Activation code
This code is a promotional code and can't be used to extend your current subscription

  • I just tried a new email account. It went ahead and reset my trial by 90 days.

  • My 5-device 3 month trial just expired, however today I entered the email address associated with my existing account at https://www.bitdefender.com/media/html/consumer/new/get-your… , signed in to said existing account when prompted, and after a couple of minutes it automatically updated the software installed on 3 devices to make them active again. I wonder how many times I'm going to be allowed to do this? Is this a loophole to get free Total Security for ever? We'll see… :)
