Shockingly good deal on a 1700X. It's been this price before but still a bargain.

Local delivered prices for a 1700 (non x) usually runs about $440 so this is exceptional when you consider it's the 1700x and delivery is about $10-$15.

The 1700 is about the same price at the time of posting!

Good deal. Keep in mind though, the 1700 (not x) includes a cooler fan, while the 1700x does not. Also the 1700 is 65w TDP vs 95 for 1700x… Some people might prefer the slightly slower 1700 even at the same price for these reasons

    • +3

You're talking about how the CPU acts under load, which can be modified in either direction. The fan is a bigger consideration.

      • plus its the RGB fan, would take that over the x version any day (unless price is really similar and I have an opaque side window

1700 can happily overclock and run under 3.8GHZ with Stock Cooler. Plus the shiny fan.

  • I'm getting 395.42 before delivery?

    • I'm getting $386 with delivery.

      • That's bizzare - mind copy & pasting?

The quoted price would be assuming you charge it in USD and use a decent card which has no currency fees like the bankwest platinum or 28 degrees mastercard.

If you use AUD then amazon throws in a few % fees in profit for themselves.

        • +1

Oh you set currency to AUD… yeah that'd do it. :P

        • @wetsandwich:

Thing I don't get is though - I've only got a NAB CC & when I check their website for the US exchange it's giving me this (this is pre fees) so isn't that just the market foreign exchange that would apply to bankwest too?

          https://www.nab.com.au/personal/international/foreign-exchan…

It's weird as it seems to be higher than the Amazon conversion

          Australian Dollars $ 397.87
          United States Dollars $ 299.00

@urbancartel: Nah basically they rip you there as well.

Just use google '299 usd in aud' and the result is very close to what the 'real' market rate is and what a decent card would cost you if charged in USD.

        • @wetsandwich:

Thanks mate - I was put off from buying some stuff from the US last week when I checked the currency converter above as it was more than I was expecting - seems like it may have been cheaper after all… Just wish there was a way of knowing EXACTLY how much I will be charged before pulling the trigger…

        • +3

@urbancartel: You should invest in one of the many CCs/Debit Cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees. Nab will probably slug you 3% of the cost in AUD even if their mid market rate is reasonable.

        • @ilikeradiohead: agree, I got charged 3% last time using Commbank for international transaction fees. I could have used 28Degrees :(

        • Yep most cards charge 3% fee for currency conversions

        • +1

          @ilikeradiohead:

Thanks - yeah i had a read and think i'll go for a Citibank Debit Card…Cheers!

        • @roonaqdai: Commbank’s AMEX companion credit cards don’t charge international transaction fees anymore either, if you have one of those.

    Great stuff
    Thanks Op
    Let the triggering begin

  • I think Intel Coffee Lake i5 would be a better and cheaper choice?

    • Maybe. i5 has 6 cores and no hyperthreading, better per core performance though, so depends on usage. I think the Ryzen 1600/1600x (6 core/12 threads) is best bang for buck.
      (Ryzen 1600x about $270Aud delivered using Amazon's converter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XKWT7GD/ref=psd_mlt_bc_B06… )

    • Without HT, the i5 will be 6 cores vs the 8core/16thread

I'd go for AMD anyway over it. Intel shouldnt really be pushing a non HT option (unless for the i3 or lower lineup)

      • Hyper Threading is useless for the majority of games and it actually hinders single clock speeds slightly.

There is no point going with an 8/16 CPU unless you are rendering videos, compiling code etc, and most people aren't doing that. Single core speed is king and Intel is way ahead of AMD in that regard.

        • Not sure why this guy got downvoted when what he said is pretty much true?

        • +2

Don't worry about it, these type of threads always attract controversy cause of fanboys of both sides.

Long story short, the 1600 is probably the best bang for buck because you can pick up a cheap MoBo for it right now and it comes with a cooler. Once the new H or B boards are released for the coffee lake series then something like the 8400 is going to be the best mid range cpu as the higher IPC on Intel chips is great for gaming.

Even apps like adobe photoshop are heavy on single core speed, just do some research if the extra threads are going to be worthwhile to you.

        • @Snoopy113:

Probably because it is not. Single clock speed is not king, it is a fringe stat that shows up if you use a GTX 1080+. If you want to speak about MOST PEOPLE, then MOST PEOPLE play at 1080p on a maximum GTX 1060 so your clock speed does almost nothing for them. You can play on a Ryzen 5 1400 and not give lots of money to Intel.

          Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFwiDlmp1hg&t=684s

So MOST PEOPLE should not buy an Intel CPU, they should buy AMD (or a G4560) and put the difference to a better GPU.

Reviewers like things simple, that is why when a new CPU comes out they test with the best GPU available to show a difference. That difference is usually not found in real life because people usually do not pair a G4560 with a GTX 1080.

          @misu p:

You pinpoint some results down to a mid tear Graphics card and one game with very low requirements when we are looking at a deal for a Ryzen 1700X which is not a low or mid tear CPU. Any reasonable person would expect a gamer who buys a 1700X to be a gamer who also buys at least a 1070 GTX which there IS a difference in gaming in single core speed.

It would be a massive waste of money for a gamer to pair a 1700X with a 1060 GTX if gaming was the focus on their machine.

        • @Snoopy113:

you agreed with somebody that said MOST PEOPLE, you clapped at what he said. MOST PEOPLE (even most gamers) do not have 1070 or 1080s. Most people have 1060s and lower.

          Source: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/

First most popular card on steam is a 1060 3gb, the second one is 960. GTX 1070+1080+1080ti market share is an amazing 6%. Basically, for 90+% of the people clock speed does not really matter. These are MOST PEOPLE. Clock speed matters is very, very fringe tests, for very few games and at very specific resolutions.

You probably have a better CPU + GPU combo…. YOU ARE NOT MOST PEOPLE.

        • I agree, that for most people, it is better to have fewer, faster cores than more, slower cores. Games generally aren't good at making use of a lot of cores (more than 2).

I do quiet a bit audio operations and conversions (eg converting flac to ape, calculating Replay gain values), and most of the programs I use can process as many files simultaneously as there are cores on my i7 CPU (Foobar, DBpowerAmp, Adobe Audition, IZotope DX, XRecode 2). In contrast, I have never played a game that gets anywhere close to 100% CPU utilization.

  • Cashback eligible 8% ?

    • Not in the eligible category i think

  • Dam. I just got myself a 1600x. I would have got this instead! FML

  • Still waiting on 8700K Aussie prices from reputable stores as opposed to rip off stores.

    Great deal though

  • hmmm looking at a new computer for my bro but considering he uses single thread apps like Adobe Photoshop Will probably go intel. Tempting offer though

  • +1

im just sick of intel crap.

yes i know maybe 8XXX series will change, maybe i5 will have HT just like AMDs.

but idc anymore. look at i9 bullshit. they even chew up their own Xeon lineup. intel changes purely based on what AMD is doing. come on,

[email protected]+32GB@3200mhz trident Z RGB hell yeah.

    • +1

The last processor where Intel gave a f@ck was Sandy Bridge, AMD failed so hard on Bulldozer that Intel could do nothing whilst simultaneously price gouging for the last 6 years. Now that Ryzen has been so successful Intel will have to step up.

      • glad i bought 3930k and stick with it until today. what a heater

  • How does this compare against an i7 7700k?

    • Wins some looses some, in short no need to upgrade unless you really need more cores. With a 7700k you probably have no need to upgrade for years.
