  • Whoa when has Dell become so cheap?

    25% off, nice deal!!!

On a related note, looks like Dell recently have revised the pricing on some of their monitors. I'm pretty sure the U2711 used to have an RRP of $999 but now its listed at $848.98 and when you apply the 15% discount code (BNCMBQ4LKKLPT7) it takes the price to $721.63. Thats a pretty good price and rather tempting!

    • You are deadset right, the RRP has now come down for the U2711!

Forgot to mention, although you can't use a coupon, you can still get a 7% cashback from MoneyBackCo or iRewards. But I think it's only 7% on the pre-gst amount (that's what happened when I ordered my U2711), so that means a CB of $90.62, bringing the total price down to about $1333.63 (The sale price is actually $1424.25)

    • Excellent, thanks for the heads-up!

      • yeah thanks will be going through moneybackco for sure :)

Why would you even bother though? For the same price, you could buy a 42-50" Sony LCD TV and use the HDMI input as a monitor. The only difference would be that you've got a better quality screen that runs at 1920x1280 instead of 2560 x 1600. Am I crazy?

    • i was going to say the same things. or if you're on tight budget, get an $800 32" LED TV from Kogan (not sure about their quality) and use the hdmi input.

      • +1

800 is more than what a U2711 costs and it has 75% more pixels and 50% more gamut and a million more % street cred lol

People have said the extra resolution gives them much more room for work/designing stuff.
Also I have a 55" TV and a 27" and I much prefer gaming on my 27", but maybe that's just me.

Higher res makes it so much more practicle in terms of productivity and work.
Using a TV for a monitor also has it's draw backs, if you sit too far it's hard to read the text, as well as the text being slightly blurry, because of the relatively low res on a large screen. And if you sit up close to a 50" TV you're gonna be turning your head a LOT!

      • also the tv colour and greyscale accuracy is inferior

Super full HD vs just full HD is the reason to get this monitor when surfing the net or playing games, you get a better rez.

      • Yeah it's a shame only PC games support 2560 x 1440/1600, the max for console games are 1920 x 1080 and most are only 1280 x 720.

        • Playing games on PC! RTS get allot of extra realestate when in this higher rez its almost like cheating :):) by being rich eheh

        • dont forget about FPS where you can see more periferals too.

Don't forget, your bluray discs would look blurry against this beautiful display!
haha not really, but it is higher res than bluray.

        • Watching blu-ray on this would be like watching SD on a HD TV ;P

i placed an order but mistakenly used the wrong billing address now my order is on retry! yey! noT! .. -1 Dell :P sux

      Isn't that your own fault…..

      • No because i tried calling them to fix it up but the call centre in India doesnt open until 12:30 "lunch time" and my 30" is in limbo intil then and the support call centre i got through too refuse to cancel the order until the sales call centre opens up because thats something THEY! do, How stupid is that! OUTSOURCE = FAIL

        • After spending about 2 hours on the phone and talking to 20 indian call centre workers i finallty CANCELED MY ORDER omg you really do NOT want to get into any payment issues when buying a Dell as its a Nightmare to try and have it resolved! worst customer service ever!

        • payment issue? If you're paying by credit card, contact your credit card company.
The plus side of having late opening hours is late closing hours, when you're at home and in no rush to get anywhere.
Other than the ocasional accent problem, I don't see an issue with Dell outsourcing to India with their call team, I once got someone who spoke almost with a perfect American accent. And also they were very nice and courteous, albeit a little slow to update their information but at least the eventually called me to say that my monitored was delayed, after hundreds were sold in the 27" sale earlier in the year.
Get over yourself, your just cheesed off because you had a bad day. And most certainly isn't Dell's fault.

        • Sorry dude, but it does sound a bit like you muffed this one up all by yourself! :p

That said, I do agree that IME outsourced support does = fail! Not due to lack of competence or communication per se, but usually lack of delegation! All the grown-up decisions need to come back to Oz anyway it seems, so it can become frustrating! ;)

  • Is it just me or is the link broken?

    • Works fine here!

      • Yep it does for me now too! Wasn't earlier on.

I've been reading about this unit recently, and a couple of things I've picked up (for anyone not familiar with it) are:

    1) it's quite sparkly due to an aggressive anti-glare coating. This bothers some people lots, and others not at all.

    2) You can't drive it at full resolution with HDMI or (obviously) VGA. You have to use DisplayPort or dual link DVI.

    3) However, if you have a Dell (and possibly others) laptop and docking station, you better check whether its DVI outputs support dual-link DVI as some don't, including my Latitude E6500, meaning that you're stuck with DisplayPort (of which the U3011 has only one).

    4) Further, for some laptops with Nvidia GPUs (again including the Latitude) you may then also get bitten by the GPU throttling problem - the GPU has to work harder to drive more pixels, it gets (too) hot (without even doing 3D or video decoding), and the laptop throttles itself down to unusable speeds under BIOS control. The Latitude Es with NV Quadros are notorious for this - it can make using two standard res monitors unworkable, so one super-high res monitor must also be a risk.

They are supposed to be quality monitors generally though. Dell really does do good monitors at good prices.

Trance N Dance) i've been buying Dell PC's for the company i work for as a Systems Administrator since 1999 spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and i have had next to no issues with them at all "going through my own corperate account manager in Australia is great" BUT having to deal with lowely sales and tech support from india is horrid and they pass you off to someone else when they cant deal with your issue.

  • Bought on the 2nd, arrived on the 4th! Thumbs up!
