  • What can I do with a raspberry pi? Is it to learn to code? How does it work?

Good question. It is relatively new, nobody probably knows what it does and I doubt it will catch on….

      • YouTube search , things to do with raspberry pi3

      • Problem with pi hole is that it can't stop google adds

      • Can you pls elaborate on the torrent box. Do you have it set up with permanent vpn / proxy.

There's heaps you can do. Its a small, cheap low power consumption computer. Personally, I'd recommend learning to code on your main computer.

Personally, I'm in the process of moving home automation control off an old laptop that I've been leaving on around the clock. I'm also planning on setting it up as a media server. The main benefit for me is lower power consumption, its small, I can show off to my non-tech savvy friends and it's silent (no fan).

I just finished installing Retropie on my rp3 and about 10000 games from just about every oldschool gaming console there is, with my ps4 controllers hooked up I'm in retro nirvana.

      Try https://home-assistant.io/

As you can tell from the URL it's a home assistant package that supports a bunch of smart-home devices and platforms.

    • Makes the bees knees Plex client with Rasplex + Black Edition skin installed.

You could get it to do menial network tasks like DNS resolving with Unbound.

You could install a GPS unit on it and mount it on an RC car powered off a lipo battery (not sure why you would though).

You can learn Python in it. There are a lot of resources around to do this on a pi.

  • Just don't expect it to arrive quickly, ordered mine 9/9, still waiting. I'm in no rush but very slow.

  • Yeah I suspected this would be the case.

The last RPi I bought was from element14, it arrived the next day!

    It's about $8.50 more from element14

    • RS Components also have it for $49.01 for next day delivery.

        ex. GST

        • woops, missed that … thanks.

        • After having looked at element14 and gone to place an order with them for a RasPi3 - their price is also ex. GST.

It gets added when you go to place the order: $48.30 + GST making it $53.13

  • People that don't know what a Raspberry Pi is good for, google it, then google the Internet of Things. Now go order one and your life is forever changed, you're welcome.

    • lol … I've had two of them sitting in a drawer for 4 years doing nothing because I have an always on PC that can do everything I would have done with the RasPi and more.

Conversely, I had a mate ring this week wanting an always on torrent box, so I'm setting up a RasPi with DietPi.
