GoPro Hero Session $159.20 C&C @ The Good Guys eBay

630
PULL20

This is the cheapest the GoPro Hero Session has ever been … I think!
$5.06 for shipping if you can't C&C.

GoPro renamed the Hero 4 Session to Hero Session when they released the Hero 5 Session. It's the same camera.

This is a compact cube-sized action camera that you probably already know about. It does 720p100, 1080p60, and 1440p30 and is water-resistant without an external housing.

The product page is here.

You'll also get 1.25% cashback with CashRewards.

  • What are these like for on the front of a surfboard… how "resistant" are they to water?

    • Up to 10m waterproof. Should be alright. These are very compact and so easy to use.

Link shows "NEW GoPro GPCHDHS-102 HERO Session" ? Is that the same as Hero 4 Session?

    • +5

Mmm it's a bit confusing. GoPro actually changed the name of the Hero 4 Session to "Hero Session" when they released the Hero 5 Session. The camera is exactly the same as the Hero 4 Session though. Not sure why they decided to do that! I just clarified it above. There have only been two (actual) Hero Session models, and this definitely isn't the Hero 5 Session. :)

You can see the CHDHS-102 model number in the product page URL:
      https://shop.gopro.com/APAC/cameras/hero-session/CHDHS-102-m…

      • this is the older one. I can confirm that as I bought it last 20% off deal

        • By older one do you mean the Hero 4 Session, or the Hero Session… which are actually the same camera?

        • What’s it like legelas? I’ve read different reviews and can’t make a decision. Looking for one to put onto my drone and was deciding between this and the Session 5 but I don’t want to destroy a $300+ camera in a crash lol.

        • @cala90: I’ve read different reviews and can’t make a decision. Looking for one to put onto my drone and was deciding between this and the Session 5 but I don’t want to destroy a $300+ camera in a crash lol.

Nobody wants to destroy their cameras crashing drones. It still happens. A lot! Buy the cheaper one. Or go cheaper again with a RunCam 3 which has excellent wide dynamic range. In fact better WDR than the session 5 from the video Josh Bardwell did comparing the two, and the Runcam 3 can be had for $132AUD.
On the plus side for the session 5, they are apparently pretty tough and their image stabilisation is a lot better than the hero session 4.
I guess I'm not helping you at this point. I've said too much.

        • @Flyerone:
Or get a Runcam Split so it is fully protected inside the frame, works as both cameras and way less extra weight!

        • @eug:

Yes, Hero 4 Session is the same as Hero Session

        • @wukachuka: Do you have one? I have held off because the video hasn't seemed great from the samples I have seen.

        • @Flyerone:
No i do not, i do plan to though!

        • there is only 2 models of session the newer one is hero 5 session so this one you can either call it hero 4 session (before they release the hero 5 session) or hero session (new name). They are the same.

Quality wise get the hero black. price, size, a weekend user and want all in one package (built in waterproof) get the session. I mount mine on top of my helmet as a dashcam while I ride my motorcycle, can't be happier. Quality: good in daylight, not so good at nighttime. It lasts for about 50-60 mins enough for me

If you want to mount it on your drone, fpv then session is a good option. if you crash, most likely only the glass will be broken, you can get a replacement on eBay for $30-$50. RunCam is a good recommendation as well, I see a lot of people use it instead of GoPro

In short, if you care too much about quality and editing, it's a big NO. if you don't like me, it's a big YES (in my opinion)

        • @legelas:

if you don't like me, it's a big YES (in my opinion)

Aww… but you aren't that bad!

  • +1

Thanks OP. Good quality, light, cheap action cam that will do 1080p/60fps, which is all I need. I'm sure it'll get plenty of use!

    • Crap. Forgot this model doesn't have image stabilization. Guess I'll stick with my GitUp 2 for bumpy situations, & use the Session when weight is a factor, like a helmet extension (gnarwhal) mount.

  • Thanks for this deal OP, Jb hi fi just price matched this (well almost) for $160. I need a good deal on an sd card now.

  • any thoughts on how this would go on a bicycle?

    • Handle bar clamp

    • Works great, that's what I use mine for. I use the Quad Lock Out Front Mount which attaches underneath my phone mount, it looks really sleek and low-profile.

      • How do you find the footage stability? And also clarity (e.g. capturing car plates clearly)?

        • Go on youtube and search for hero session + bicycle. I would expect it would be pretty good, if you want it to be perfect you'll have to mount it to your chest/shoulder/helmet.

        • I'd looked into video stabilization on YouTube a while ago. Mountain biking looked much better for cameras with image stabilization than for cameras without it. So not sure how good the Session will look.

        • How do you find the footage stability? And also clarity (e.g. capturing car plates clearly)?

Stability-wise, it looks fine as an evidence camera… you probably won't want to make an epic movie with a bike-mounted camera though!

With clarity, I actually have the GoPro 5 Session so I record in 4K. Not too sure what it looks like in 1080P, but if car dashcams work fine at 1080P, I'm sure this will too.

  • Code invalid?

  • Any idea how this would go on a motorcycle helmet, I have seen some pretty hectic road incidents on my motorcycle and I would love to capture some

    • +1

It would go fine. You use the curved stick on mount.

    • I use a normal sized Gopro Hero for my helmet.

Can chin mount with the 3M curved mount + sugru. Or do what I did & get a 3-D printed mount that can tilt and rotate for the perfect angle :)

      • Interested in that 3d mount….

        • PM'd you the details :)

    • can confirm it does just fine on top of a helmet. One tiny problem is the footage looks a bit bumpy with mine. Maybe because of my set up or my riding style, I don't really know but I don't really care that much :)

  • +1

thanks OP, pulled the trigger on this one after going out riding last week. glad a waited a few days ;-)

  • I still cannot work out the best GoPro but they're tempting at today's prices.

It seems that not having a screen is a recipe for some pretty odd centre video making though?

I was looking for a decent tough outdoor / underwater camera and got an Olympus tough. It's ok but to be honest the video and image quality is just ok.

Do the GoPro really produce such crisp clear videos like their promo videos in all the shops? Those things seriously pop with clarity.

    • +1

It seems that not having a screen is a recipe for some pretty odd centre video making though?

It depends on what kind of video you want to make I guess. The lens is really wide, so if you aim in the general direction of the action you'll definitely capture it.

Do the GoPro really produce such crisp clear videos like their promo videos in all the shops? Those things seriously pop with clarity.

Ahh… in bright lighting conditions, they can look crisp and clear. But in lower light … …. mmmrhmm. That's true with any action camera though, except maybe the $1.1k Sony RX0.

  • So tempted to get this to use on a holiday in Feb. Only issue is won't be able to claim TRS. Decisions…

    • +1

this is ~28% off RRP. it is a good price, but sure you can find better/similar prices before feb. I would hold

      • +2

No point unless buying two - the minimum purchase for TRS is $300.

    • +1

TRS from memory is above $300 single purchase?

      • Just to clarify, I think it is over $300 spent at a single store/seller. So it can be a mix of items. Don't hold me to that though.

And you need to bring that stuff overseas with you.

    • Oh my mistake, thanks for the clarification guys.

  • Please ignore all the comments from people saying the session 4 and 5 are the same, they are not.

The session 5 has voice commands and built in digital stabilisation which is not on the older model.

    • +1

Hmm? Which comments are you talking about?

    • +1

we are talking about the hero 4 session and hero session. they changed the name after releasing the hero 5 session

      • -1

Oh Yes, I misread slightly. Haha sorry.

  • Bought one back in July, absolute pain cycling through the menu to get it sync with the phone. Should've spent more.

Can't replace battery and so far the battery last for about 1 hour 45 minutes.

    • Can you plug it into a battery pack?

      • +1

I could open the door up and hook it up to a battery pack but that just 1) no longer be waterproof 2) the little hinged door exposed to the element and could be knocked off.

      • +1

Can you plug it into a battery pack?

Yup you can. When I use it for a long timelapse that's what I do. I've clipped it to my backpack strap with the usb cable running to a power bank in my bag as well.

        • That's good. It needs that option.

    • 1 hour 45min is not enough for my bicycle ride. Surely there is a better way to have more battery life.

      • People are getting 2 hours and 10 minutes easily on these.

    • Bought one back in July, absolute pain cycling through the menu to get it sync with the phone.

Do you mean turning on the wifi connection?
There are only two buttons, don't you just press the rear button 5 times quickly, then the top button twice?

      • You mean press the rear 4 times then the top button once? Still a chore unfortunately.

        • Hmm ok, I guess we have different definitions of 'absolute pain' and 'chore'. I can do it in under 3 seconds. :)

  • anyone got this error when check out?"Something went wrong. Please try to check out again."Error code: 70049
    Tried three times,:(

  • Thinking about this one or paying pretty much doubel and going for the Hero 5 Session? Thoguhts?
Thinking about using it for riding bicycles and roaming around Japan later on in December/Jan.

    • It depends.. what do you want to do with the footage? What would you like it to look like?
I used a handheld gimbal with my GoPro for a few shots when I went to Japan.. makes a big difference to the footage I think!

      • Im going to Japan next March. Ordered one of these for the trip. Any recommendations besides handheld gimbal?

        • I'd say… play with it a bit beforehand to get used to framing, make sure you have enough micro SD cards, do some test edits to make sure the color/exposure/white balance settings will give you the results you want in your editing application and get whatever mounts you need (suction cup? bag strap?). I think the biggest help for me was a gimbal, at least for the kind of video i made.

  • Anyone thing it is worth getting a Xiaomi version with a screen to take on a holiday instead of spending more on a go pro?

  • Should I get this or Hero Session 5?

I'm using it for road cycling so the only key concern is clarity to capture car plates

    • Got mine today via click and collect for my motorcycle and its captures peoples plate easily enough.

      • That's quick… So you've already used it and are happy with the quality of footage?

        • Ordered at 1pm and available for pickup at 4pm for click and collect.
Surprisingly quick if honest. I've used it going to and from work and so far i'm happy with it.
Picks up plates easily enough but i'm not sure about the night time low light yet.

    • Depends on the length of your ride…

I have been using Garmin VIRB basic for my front camera and Fly6 v2.0 for my rear camera…

VIRB battery lasts almost 4 hours on 720p setting 60fps and you can easily remove it from the cradle for charging.

      Daytime footage..

      Night time footage

      • @pitiek

I've looked into fly6 but found that the quality is a bit lacking - eg car would have to be directly in front of the camera to clearly capture the plate.

Perhaps it's just bad footage I've seen, but has that been your experience?

EDIT: saw your vids… some close shaves!

  • What are some recommendations for SD cards for this GoPro? Are sandisk extreme or Lexar likely to have less issues with GoPro?

    • As long as you go with a Class 10, you'll be fine - try to avoid any Class 4 cards.
They won't get the higher res video transferred across as smoothly.

I've got the Hero 4 Silver and have never had issues with Class 10 cards, be it SanDisk, SanDisk Extreme, or Lexar.
I just ordered 2 of these yesterday (1 for me and 1 for my drummer) and they had to ship it to Melb from Ballarat (mostly sold out in Vic!)
