There's one called cmoar vr theatre on android that is very good. I just load up my sd card with movies and it works perfectly fine. Also when you are connected to Wi-Fi there's a Netflix vr app that is pretty cool.

The tradeoff is you can come off looking like a knob. I don't really see anyone else wearing them but they are fantastic.

Too slow I was daydreaming :(

BTW, any reason why need compatible phones?

    They are just VR display.

    • To reduce motion blur, proper VR displays need to be "low persistance" - Here's a Valve engineer explaining it. http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/abrash/why-virtual-isnt-real-…

Your phone also needs to have enough CPU and graphics processing power to run the experiences/apps/games.

Google Cardboard (the predecessor to Daydream) was compatible with any appropriately sized android phone - all of which didn't run in low-persistance mode. Thus, they were all garbage and just leave people with a bad impression of VR.

      • Thanks for the link.

I have G6 but don't seem on the list.

        • You can probably use it as a crummy Cardboard viewer, or hack Daydream support into your phone https://www.vrheads.com/how-manually-enable-daydream-phones-…. Either way, the results won't be great because of the whole persistance thing.

        • @akaakmdm:

So the Samsung Gear VR is not a Daydream type, right?

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/334846

Why S7 or S7 Edge not compatible they are also super amoled screen.

        • The Gear VR is similar to Daydream in that only some phones are supported. The Gear VR phones will put themselves in a high performance mode with low-persistance enabled on their screens.

The platform is different however. If you buy a GearVR you can run Oculus GearVR apps. If you buy a Daydream, you can run Daydream apps.

Technically the Galaxy S7 can run Daydream. http://www.techtimes.com/articles/185750/20161114/google-day…. However, for some reason they never officially supported it. I'm not sure if the AMOLED will run in a low-persistance mode or not if you force it to run.

        • @akaakmdm:

In that case I assume nothing similar for other phones.

I was too busy researching M9's comment

    • mind sharing your findings with us common folks?

Moist Most articles are NSFW so try Googling it. This new toy might blow you away (your mind).

  • Would this work on a xiaomi

    • +2

      No.

Mostly only super amoled screen phone.

  • +6

I use it to watch VR porn on S8. Its good but with 1080p videos stretched on VR screen effectively making it 144p, its not as useful. You need 4k or 8k videos to get 1080p in VR.

  • Serious question, can VR headsets be an alternative to big screen TV's?

    • +3

I don't think your eyes can handle watching from VR headsets for long period of time also wearing VR is not comfortable because it is heavy.

    • you'll run into the pixelated / screen door effect

this comes up a fair bit on reddit, you can watch on a simulated screen with the for 2d vids/movies as for desktop VR you have things like actually running your desktop in VR and screen sharing too (see Bigscreen Beta and Virtual Desktop)

  • Are these better then the Samsung Gear VR?

  • +5

It's still available on the Telstra Accessories site, just bought one at the same price.

    • Thanks just ordered one from there as missed it on eBay.

    • Got one through the store. Thanks!

      • Online or at a Telstra shop?

      • +1

No worries, was really interested in it after seeing someones comment about using it for movie watching on the plane and couldn't resist haha, even if I have an iPhone it should still relatively work.

  • Thanks OP - woohoo new toy for the Note 8

  • +2

I'm proud of myself. I've finally resisted buying something that I'll use once then store it away only to realise a year later I still have it.

Must resist. Shall not buy. Please be sold out soon. Then I'll regret not buying it and will kick myself for a day.

    I need help!

  • -1

Don't need one… got it anyway!

  • Unless you have a significantly high res screen, get ready for plenty of "screen-door" effect. I've tried a cardboard thingy with my iphone 6 and it was borderline un-watchable. I still grabbed a Daydream though in case I upgrade to a Pixel 2 :P

  • +1

    Dont need one.
    Don't have a compatible phone.

Your order was placed. Estimated delivery: Tue, 17 Oct–Thu, 19 Oct We'll send you email confirmation soon. View order details.

Well I need a new phone now I guess.

  • Thanks Bought one to use it on my Note 8 and also will be my First Experience with VR :)

  • Thanks OP just bought one hehe

  • Got mine delivered this morning. Great!!
Will see how it goes with s8+

  • Sigh! No use for my old G3.

  • Damnnn this things is in high demand. Good thing I check Ozbargain every 15 minutes. Would have missed out again. Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP, I don't have a compatible phone but it's a great present for someone who does. :)

  • Bought one. Thanks OP.
    Now I just need to buy a S8/Note 8.

  • So they went out of stock as i bought it, they took my money out my account but there is nothing on ebay or my email to say ive actually purchased the item. Did this happen to anyone else?

  • +1

Arrived bloody quick, now I just need an LG phone so I can watch bootloops in 3D :D

  • Bought one this morning :)
Now I need to find a way to put my iPhone X or current 6 plus into this thing,,

  • Arrived…. now i need a phone that will work with it. I'm looking at you PixelXL2.

  • Got mine in less than 24 hours. I'm amazed. Pity it doesn't come with a USB-C cable though to charge the controller.

  • Mine just arrived at work too - let's see how this baby works - lucky the boss is away today so the team can play with it lol. thanks again OP

  • Did anyone get this working properly with Note 8? I had weird issues where the screen would glitch and move around. I couldn't really do anything.

I ran out of time to test properly.

  • So for everyone who's received it - best apps suggestions? I'm on a Note 8 if that makes a difference (which also, sits funnily above the flap because it's pretty big)

  • If anyone in Adelaide has received theirs and changed their mind, let me know. Will pay cost price.

    Thanks

  • Just spoke to Telstra, Mines yet to be posted due to "Technical (shortage) issue".

Hopefully Still get it, I received an invoice at Sat 14/10, 8:59 AM

    • I received my invoice at Sat 14/10, 8:37 AM. Got the daydream today. It is my second daydream device, the first one I ordered it from Telstra ebay which was deliveried last week. To be honest, if you have samsung device, I highly recommend samsung gear vr, far more better than daydream. However, for $25, I cannot complaint, the remote is worth it.

  • anyone knows how to skip payment method during setup? there is no "skip" option and don't want to add payment details.

  • Anyone n ow how to select stuff like ‘start’ when using an iphone? Only using as a fancy google cardboard button but without the magnetic button I can’t get j to anything…
