Been watching for several months - This is the normal price

  • I've only been researching vpns for the last week.

Nord and expressvpn consistently rate as the best 2.

Apparently Nord is "more" secure , a little slower than express, and a bit cheaper.

I'm not 100% convinced about the independence of some review sites - i.e. do they push a particular service because they get a commission ?

Have also seen sites that advise against both of these vpn's - but once again I wonder about motive ( e.g. whether they may be set up by / for competing services.

Would be glad to hear other views

    • I use Nord, it's not very good for browsing, I get terrible speeds and fast speeds about 70/30 split. If I leave something large to D/L overnight it will get through it though. I'm on ADSL2 in Melb. Happy enough with the service as I have no need to browse, streaming is not possible because of the surge in speed in my experience.

      • im with Nord and on NBN, i have not had any issued with them at all, i've been with them for years now and i must admit they are the best out there, i've tried a few including express, Unlimited, Vyper and PIA, none are as good and user friendly.

6 Devices is also very generous, they offer pretty good security levels and even P2P in Australia.

      • For secure and fast browsing try our proxy extension for Google Chrome

VPN review sites = affiliate spam

and WTF would Choice know about VPNs & how to rate them?

These guys are ok, but there's equivilant services, cheaper out there.

Basically to comes down to what you actually want it for and how much you want to pay.

Get a free trial, try them out is usually the best way.
ALso note in a few weeks the various sales will begin (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday ) VPN's tend to be heavily discounted, so now is a good time to trial a few, then get ready to pounce during one of the sales.

IF you really want to do some reseatrch check out That One Privacy Guy's VPN website, here's their FAQ's

here's their comparison chart (it's handy just to see the one's available)

      • if anyone's curious, i just had a quick flick through that site and his most highly recommended service seems to be Mullvad, a Swedish mob. I might sign up for a month and see what they're like.

      • I agree with supabrudda'a points above.

I have been using PureVPN for 3 years and Cyberghost Premium for 18 months without any issues :)

I'm not 100% convinced about the independence of some review sites - i.e. do they push a particular service because they get a commission ?

It's said to be common practice and NordVPN is reportedly involved.

On VPNs in general, I'd recommend taking this grain of salt:

      https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20170404/12393537084/techd…

      • nice website, Nord had mostly green!

  • VPN providers are extremely competitive… There are lots of terrible sites out there 'reviewing' vpns for cash. I'm not saying this is the case here, but if you've never heard of the reviewing site, why would you trust them? I'm with VPN unlimited, the reviews on pcmag etc were good, and they did a lifetime deal for 130 bucks. Been good so far, five connections available. My UK family are using 2 for p2p, I'm using it on my phone and laptop, also for p2p. So I'd try out a major site for reviews, although that's not a guarantee of independence either. I took a punt, and it worked out, but most vpns do monthly, so you can try and cancel.

    • I got them a few years back, but I found it painfully slow. It was handy for when BBC was blocking VPN's for iplayer (but it used to take 1.5-3hrs to d/l a 500mb show.

BTW if anyone does want VPNUnlimited. they are doing Lifetime 10 devices for $us56 (or $us51 if you get the 10% signup discount)

      https://stacksocial.com/sales/infinity-vpn

      • I've been setting my server to Paris, and getting 1mbs from torrents, doesn't seem to be any slower than my base net connection… I've streamed BBC, seemed OK, never bothered trying to download though. 56us is cheap enough hey? Dunno if they'll be around in 2 years, who knows?

        • Dunno if they'll be around in 2 years, who knows?

Yeah I'm surprised too. They were doing $us19/3yr (i got) & $us29/lifetime when I got them nearly 3yrs ago and I said. Ha! Why buy lifetime when they probably won't be around in 2, let alone 3yrs…..well I was wrong :-) glad their speeds are going well for you guys.

It's rare to get Nord cheaper than this on a 2 year plan.I paid $108 for 2 years and thought that was a good deal for this awesome vpn.

    • It was much slower than PIA last time I used it.

      • does anyone else have experience comparing with PIA. I have been with PIA for a few years and they are great - but I can't access BBC iplayer anymore (this is not their primary purpose though). I see Nord advertise as allowing BBC - do they actively engineer the service to allow it?

        • BBC every so often do a Netlix & start blocking VPNs. I found some of the smaller ones worked (the cheapier lifetime ones on stacksocial).

I use Ivacy & ibvpn for beeb with no issues. Ivacy was cool as it allows split-tunnel, which means I could route iplayer via a uk vpn & the rest of my traffic normally, thus allowing me to screencast iplayer on my phone to the TV.

I also used to use VPNUnlimited (see comments above) they were slow for me, but worked when others like Toguard & PIA didnt. But apparently they're quicker now.

        • Nord 2 yr has previously been $40. PIA is often on sale via stacksocial for around $60 for 2 yrs. Very comparable.

        • with NordVPN you can access 400+ streaming services, BBC and US Netflix are a few of them.

      • Every day we're doing our best to improve and deliver top quality service, we'll be more than happy if you'll give us a try now.
Feel free to take 3 days free-trial https://nordvpn.com/free-trial/ and share your experience.

        • Can you offer a better deal. PIA is more competitive, and your previous offering has included a 2-Yr VPN Subscription for US $39 (US $35.10 with email subscription discount)?

        • @chyawala:
This price was more than 2 years ago, so sorry we can't offer you such price at the moment.
And by the way it does not fair to compare only price because services have different features:
          1) NordVPN provides you 24/7 customer support through live chat, while PIA have just contact form (tickets);
          2) We're based outside 14-eys (PIA based in US)
          3) Pia doesn't work accessing streaming services like Netflix, BBC and other;
          4) doesn't have ad-blocker and much more features like double VPN, TOR and etc.

        • @Nordvpnmedia:
Fair points. However I had a 2 year Nord subscription and after a while some AU servers would just plain not connect, despite their status of being up and running. A real headache when repeatedly needing to reconfigure at the router level.

Switched to PIA and never had that problem again, though it was a waste to let 18 months of paid Nord subscription just go unused. To your credit though I have noticed at times Nord can be faster.

        • Well I have signed up to trial - but after trying different UK servers I have had no luck with BBC iPlayer.

  • do you guys support static IP? I have Vividwireless which on every reboot provide a new IP address but I need to work from home once a week so, I am looking for static Australian IP to use once per week

    • All our servers have static IP address, so if you'll connect to the same server all the time - you'll get the same IP address.

  • Check this - https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-anonymous-review-2017-…

Bear in mind this - https://torrentfreak.com/purevpn-logs-helped-fbi-net-alleged… - "Until now, PureVPN had always maintained it carried no logs - almost."

I use Nord for the last 3 years and have had no issue so far, with torrenting and speed (that isn't a local issue or international cable) - DL speed is often maxed but I am on ADSL2 and can't speak to faster connections.

I also like https://airvpn.org/ because it's run by serious activists and not just businessmen.

    • what speed before ADSL do you get?

Im on NBN max tier and the speeds with VPN are still crazy good

      • 1200KBps is the best I've ever had on my connection and it's the same on any Nord server in the region - Sing, HK, etc. Speed is not an issue on their servers.

It can vary and a connection can drop out and I don't know why but a server change usually fixes that. The Kill switch is handy in that case.

  • +1

I can vouch they are pretty good, customer service is good and if you have a stable internet service at home then you shouldn't have any issues.

I'm currently on the higher tier with NBN, speeds through vpn is still pretty damn good! (i can do test for anyone)

    • +1

Yes, CS is very good. And they actively develop the app, which is also very good once you get to know it - comprehensive controls but can also be set to auto.

Oh anyone looking for VPN deals (again I'd wait until US Thanksgiving/cyber monday)

    Always check Reddit for deals
    https://www.reddit.com/r/vpncoupons/
and for cheap/backup options check StackSocial (lots of lifetime one - which are fairly questionable on how long they'll last)
    https://stacksocial.com/deals/software#70-security

I use PIA and on my 100mbit NBN connection I get 67mbit which is fantastic. Great torrent speeds as well.

    • +1

Feel free to take 3 days free-trial https://nordvpn.com/free-trial/ and try our service.

      • that should have been in the description. You'd get a lot more sales offering a free try before you buy

      • if you give me more then 67mbit I will join you. ill test this weekend.

      • im trying and i press connect and it just times out…so far not the best first experience.

i tried to connect to your 24/7 live chat and it doesnt even open up a window to chat…

  • so whats the general consensus - NordVPN or PIA?
