  • IS this a good price? Myers has the iPad mini 4 128GB for $499 at the moment which you could combine with the WW coles myer gift card deal to get 10% off (two x $200 GC and one x $50 giftcard) plus a 4% cashback.

    • It's not a bad one but it's not spectacular either (but hey, it's cheaper than other things).

Not sure why you would compare the iPad mini vs the iPad 9.7 - they aren't really comparable other than being 'ipads'.

      • Yeah, fair enough. Are most of the iPads other than the pro versions are nearing the end of their life cycles though?

Edit: looked it up and the iPad isn't while the mini is.

        • I was wondering the same thing - but the specs for the camera (notably the front facing camera) seem pretty poor. My four year old phone has a 1.2MP selfie camera! Or does the "FaceTimeHD" make it much better than it sounds?

Sadly Apple rarely seem to have a product line that's 'cutting edge' any more. I don't see this changing in the future. However their ecosystem and usability still seems pretty good and the reason a bunch of people buy into it.. interface, applications and how it all fits together.

  • the pencil only works with the pro, doesn't it?

    • correct. Apple do have other touch sensitive screens that technically would work with the penvil but the pencil has firmware that only 'allows' it to work with the ipad pro.

      • It’s not just software, it’s hardware too. Same for the S-Pen, Surface Pen, etc. The screen needs to have Wacom technology (or whatever other company equivalents are available)

  • What's the need to pay through the nose for 128Gb when music and photos etc are generally in the cloud these days?

I personally opted for the 128gb version to allow for offline storage of netflix shows when a data connection isn't available. I tend to fill up 32gb fairly quickly as well with apps/photos/media.

    • What happens if you're in an area that doesn't have access to mobile internet or is very dodgy. You can't access your files since it's on the internet right.

      • I think what they meant was because it is WiFi only why do you need more storage if it will only used where there is WiFi and WiFi generally these days are quite good.

And well the correct answer to that is just cause and just in case.

And because Apple orifices don't support expandable storage what you pick is what you get unlike other devices where you can add storage as you go.

    • Apple products generally don't have expandable storage.

Apps and files these days can easily surpass 32 or even sometimes 64 gb of storage and it is good practice to not try to past 60-70% capacity of storage for health and performance reasons of the internal hardware.

Also sometimes it's just nice to have a back up plan or files in case your home internet goes out like mine does every now and then for a few minutes to a few hours.

So unless you know you won't hit the minimum storage size the higher storage brackets make sense.

As an example I YouTube background download with my free 4 month YouTube red subscription to save time and avoid buffering nuisances. On my android device that has already easily taken 40 gb. But I am considered maybe an extreme power user so ymmv.
