Massdrop X Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones Delivered USD $215 ~AUD $281

370

It's back in stock if you have missed out the June release. Only 4500 units and more than 3000 unit has been sold(it hasn't been 24hr since the release time). Be quick because I have a feeling this will be the last drop that they will be having for this year. Also, i suspect all stock will be gone by early Sunday morning. God knows when would the next drop be in 2018? Delivery is estimated in 20 Dec, so my guess is that we wont be getting it by Jan'18.

update 15 Oct 23:45 Less than 100 units now. Crunch time begins and soon it will dissapear.

These are great! wearing one right now, bought in the first drop last year.

    • That's cool. How does this compare to your collection? I can't wait to get my hands on these bad boys.

    • Any idea how the bass compares to a DT990 pro 250ohms? Looking to upgrade my DT990's.

      • +1

Having a DT990 600 ohms cans in my collection, i can safely say that the DT990 has more bass without having to hear a HD6series phones. HD600/650/6xx is more for midtones and clarity in the music. More critical listening i should say.

        • I’ve heard good things too.

        • Thanks for that. :)

  • Patiently twiddling my thumbs waiting for mine :)

  • I got this drop in the morning today when it was still less than 1k units sold.
Was just wondering if my pc motherboard onboard sound can drive this headphone. If anyone owns one and would be able to provide some info?
Not really keen on buying an amp at the moment. A lot of people say that you need an amp.

    • +1

Only time will tell i guess. However, you still can listen it on your pc or mobile phone, it's just that not to the fullest of its capability. I'm bored listening to people giving advice s like "YOU HAVE TO GET AN AMP". My advise is to save around AUD$160 and get yourself a jds labs O2 amp down the road. That amp can drive pretty much any hmdynamic headphones except planar magnetic ones, that needs to be accessed further.

      • Thanks. I'm just not wanting to receive my headphones then realise my pc wont be able to drive these =P But ill consider an amp later on.

        • Like the other guy said, depends on the sound component of your motherboard. These days any decent motherboard has built in DAC and/or Amp, like my Z270 Taichi. So you might be fine, just check your specs. If you do feel like getting a proper amp later on I'd suggest a vacuum tube amp, I use one with my 598's and I have literally had a tear roll down my cheek at the sound of EITS in FLAC ;_;

    • Depends on the PC motherboard. Mine with an ASRock Purity Sound 2 (Realtek ALC1150) 600ohm headphone amp powers my DT990 250ohm headphones just fine. So it depends on what sound chipset is on your motherboard and whether it has a headphone amp.

    • Instead of spending money on an amp, use that money to buy the best headphones you can get.

An amp is only needed if the volume from the source is not loud enough. And if it is needed, I would not spend on the amp more than 10% the price of the headphones.

  • Just note the expected delivery date of mid December….with massdrop's delivery track record tho it might be early 2018.

Picked one up anyway and a modmic5 to replace my astro a50s.

  • Can anyone recommend the kind of amp/DAC is require to power these sufficiently without spending a lot of money? Preferably something relatively portable as I use a laptop.

Just trying to work out what my “all in” cost would be.

    Thanks

    • Try JDS Labs O2 amp/dac combo..or if you can stretch the buget a little bit more buy the element series for that more ommpphh and sort if future proofing for any cans you buy in the near future. Yes, being an audio enthusiast will break your wallet. Trust me…next up you'll be looking at tube amps LOL

      • Thanks for the response. I’ve dropped plenty of coin on my guitars and amplifiers (I’m talking point to point handwired stuff; not a PCB in sight.

I fear how over the top I would go if I get into this!

      • JDS Labs O2 comes in about 4 variations. Which would you recommend ? The standard 2.5x / 6.5x gain or one of the others ?

        • If you are not planning to get a dac, standard would be a safe bet. I think with a dac it's recommended to get 1-2.5 if im not mistaken. Also, the question would be will you ever buy a 600 ohms headphone in the future? Cause at 600 ohm, you'd need a gain setting of minimum 4-4.5x just to get it amplified. I know it's a bit tricky as there is no one solid setting. It all depends on what you will be doing and perhaps think of some future proofing. Dont want to keep on buying gears if you need to right. Good luck.

    • Massdrop often have suitable portable DAC/amps around $2-250. Pico, Xduo and plenty of others.

    • If you are in Melbourne, I have the JBS Labs amp and dac that I can sell for a good price. It has been rarely used and may not have been burnt in yet. The amp can run on a rechargeable battery (installed) as well as wall power.

      • I am in Melbourne, in fact. Is it possible to send me a message?

  • This is a very good price. I was recently on the phone with Addicted to Audio asking if i can get the hd650 for a price close to $350 which they've had a few times in the past and they stated that its not longer possible as sennheiser has increased the rrp on these

    • They are selling the HD600 for $317…crazy price for a 20 something year old cans.

      • +1

for a 20 something year old cans.

the components and specifications have changed, only model designation hadn’t. They’re selling the ‘Mini’ for $50,000 - crazy price for a 58 something year old car. It’s marketing.

6XX is 650, so, it's quite unfair to brick-and-mortar retailers who have no hope of competing on price whilst losing rare high-end or aspiring customers. Sennheiser should temporarily incentivise 650 during 6XX offer. I'm all for lower-priced high-end audio gear, but this just seem unfair to retailers.

        • +1

I guess that's the pulling power that massdrop has. They make such price a reality. Im hoping a HD800 to be massdroped. Anyways, I can't imagine the impact for local retailers when amazon sets foot into the aussy market. Hardly normal and jb will start packing up their bags. Sad day for australian workforce but a win for the consumers.

        • @Volution:

          pulling power that massdrop has.

Sennheiser’s a strong brand so don’t really need MD - they can sell non-retail variants with on their own website, all without cannibalising their sales via brick-and-mortar shops.

Seems like they haven’t figured out future sale strategies, so, they’re dipping their toes in to see how it pans out. Retailers should be panicking.

been eyeing these since the first drop :( but never have the money!!!!

    • +4

May i suggest eating instant noddles for the next month or so just like i did back in my uni days in order to get Playstation 2 LOL

      • HAHAHA currently saving money for my interstate trip with my gf for next month.

        • +3

Wait until she becomes your wife, she will promote herself to CFO and then you will be penniless Haha im just joking, enjoy your trip then.

  • Thanks OP. Got one.

    • Congratz on getting queue#3174 ;)

  • +1

I don't know anything about audio but I'm buying these 29k sold good enough for me

    • +2

This will blow your mind. You'd never ever want to hear music without it. If you can afford a dedicated amp or combo dac/amp, it will bring joy to your ears. Check out jds labs of you dont want to break the bank.

      • +1

Can u tell me what does that do and also a link to where I can find it for the lowest price

        • +1

          PM'd

        • @Volution: can you also tell me what that does and lowest price? :)

        • @haggertm: PM me please. I can't seem to PM you for some reason.

    • You are in!

      Welcome to the group.

Thanks to you joining, the group is now saving a total of $965,271.00. Very impressive.
Now don’t leave your friends hanging. Let them in on the news so they can join in too.

      • 1Million here we come!

  • Would these be substantial enough of an upgrade from HD600's?

    • That's a tough question. If you have the funds, why not have both. On the other hand, you would need to ask yourself if a slightly brighter, slightly deeper bass, more spacial surround but sacrificing slight vocal clarity(on music that's heavy on solo vocals) and shorter cable with a 3.5mm would justify for the upgrade.

  • I would say this would be sold out tonight. It's already at 4150 sold.

I only wish i had the money to buy one. I already just recently spent my headphone budget on a Beyer DT770 Pro.

    • Very tempting…….

I know the feeling, I recently got a DT880 Pro, these velour pads are so comfy. I've tried a friend's old HD650, the clamping force is a bit strong IMO, not as comfy as the Beyers.

      • Yeah. I've also got a pair of DT990 Pro myself which i bought a few weeks ago. Very comfy pads. But i thought i would add a DT770 Pro to my collection since it's a closed design. So far i've got 8 headphones to my collection.

  • Jumped into this yesterday. Joined the drop at person number 3100 or something. I'd been researching quality headphones and was about to go for either a HD600 or an AudioTechnio ATH M70x and then this deal popped up and made the decision so much easier.

Buying this ahead of getting any proper audio gear to power it. Was considering a DAC for my laptop but I don't see myself using it that way often.

Looking at getting a Fiio X3 digital player in order to play FLAC music. Will pair it with a Fiio A5 microphone amp. The A5 sounds ideal for my situation as I travel a lot for work and can use in tandem with my Nintendo Switch.

    • +1

You've made an excellent choice. HD600 is a legend in it's own right but at this price, it's hard to pass up such deal :)

  • if you aim for Hi-Fi, just go for Stax SRS-3100 period.

    • Sure if you've got a spare $1400 to spend on a headphone. That's going by the inflated Australian price of course haha.

    • Remember, this is ozbargain. Stax post is for other audiophile forum LOL sky is the limit with the world of audio. But it doesn't mean an average joe(people like us) couldn't enjoy the immersion of the audio world with a fraction of the cost.

  • Is this overkill for FPS gaming on ps4? Currently use Astro A40 TR's

    • You would need at least a 300 Ohm headphone amp if you want to make the most of this headphone to properly power it.

    • I have the same headphones and man are they crap my turtle beach px21 destroys them

      • Destroys the A40s or these posted? I've used the Px21's and imo they don't even come close to the A40s.

        • I purchased the Astro a 40 TR and I was pretty happy with sound until I plugged my px21 into the little amp thing and that's when I realised the Astro's are crap so I sold them on gumtree and kept the amp thing but now I will be gaming with a blue yeti and these sennheiser cans running of a decent amp/dac combo which I know nothing about Volution already suggested jds labs 2 amp/dac models but I just can't pay retail so I'm waiting on a drop from massdrop for amp/dac there's a big poll on there with plenty of votes so hopefully not long until then I'm sure my motherboard can run these

        • +1

          @ABUKEE:

I never tried them with the Mixamp but if you used the Mixamp TR you'll be blown away when you try another amp or one of the older Astro mixamps. I'm using my Astro Mixamp from 2011, it sounds a lot better than the Mixamp TR (doesn't have that metallic/echoey noise people have been complaining about with the TR's when Dolby is turned on).

I think I'll try get rid of these soon and look into getting a proper headphone/mic combo

    • This headphone is great for music but not for gaming.

      • This is untrue

  • +2

Congrats everyone the drop is over

  • I am looking for a great quality earphone with mic, preferably cordless. Hope to see some great deals soon

    • I've seen 3rd party cable for these with a mic. Get it on the next drop if you want to listen to another sound level. Provided you have the appropriate amp to power it.

  • Got 1 a few days ago and just got the confirmation email. Excited even if shipping is another 2 months away.

    • You'll start the new year with a bang (pun intended)

      • Reading and watching reviews on these just make me excited that much more!

  • Just curious, how do these compare to the AKG AKG K7XX (based of AKG K702) that Massdrop is offering for the same price as a pair of these? https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition…

    • The 6xx are more natural sounding and flat. Dont be fooled by the low impendance of the akg's as they need power to actually hear to it's full potential. Soundstage and bass is more in akg's. It's also more coloured.
