Not everyone wears tinfoil hats …. and it's actually useful.

    • +12

You must be confused and logged on to the wrong website, this is Ozbargain, nobody here has a conscience.

      • correction: we don't as long as it is 1c or more cheaper!

I don't know why this comment has so many negs. 4 people liked the deal where as 7 people negged a poster questioning the fact that nobody wants to be recorded night and day.

I enjoyed the youtube series 'Surveillance camera man' as what is the difference between him and these devices… the difference is that these devices will be hacked and your data will be mined by anyone.

      • It only records after you say google, as you can see by the logs

        • Correction: For as long as it continues as intended, and provided it is not compromised, it is only recording after you say Google, and probably other words that are not documented.

@kipps: better rip out the microphone in every single mobile phone and computer in your house, and rip out all your colleagues ones at work too

      • Yeah because of all the tech companies Google is so well known for being hacked all the time.

People who aren't just clueless conspiracy nuts who make up crap to feel important take a great deal of interest in these devices and that's why it took sfa time to discover the flaw in the Google Home Mini.

  • I don't get it. Im worried about these in that everything you say will possibly one day be used against you…

If hacked, then all your conversations will be made public, So that fake sick day, or the time you did e at a club etc.

Just wondering, isn't that just the same as the microphone on your phone? Isn't that just always in constant use without your knowledge the same as this for things like "Hey Siri" on iPhone?

      • I turn data on only when I am using my phone where as this uploads everything and then catalogs your conversations.

Google already know everything about me; my name is Scab, I'm an unemployed Ozbargainer and I frequent porn sites and pay-per-view live cam shows.

        • +3

And that stops your microphone from working?
If they were actually spying on you, it would be easy to just have your microphone record everything and then upload when you connect.

        • -2

          @ScruffTheJanitor:
I dont think they are actively spying in the way you propose.

        • +1

@ScruffTheJanitor: or pretend to turn off your data and pretend theyre not connecting to a public hotspot that they already know the password to

        • Won't stop it storing to memory.
And it can process the audio into text, look for keywords, compress the interesting bits and be uploading tiny amounts of data you wouldn't notice.
Not that you are likely to be interesting enough for anyone to care.

    • +3

Or how many times you asked it what a kookaburra sounds like.

    • The only things that get recorded/uploaded or after the activate command.
It processes all speach offline and doesnt save a anything until it hears the command

    • Any phone app with media and network is able to do this.
Difference is Google are a big company and the device is under a lot of scrutiny and review for security. Vs some free app you installed once and forgot about which gained new stealth features in auto updates.

  • The NSA is listening …. shhhhhhh

    • +16

Recycling an old joke… My wife and I were talking the other day about whether any of the three-letter agencies were listening in to our conversations via our Google Home unit. We eventually agreed that would be pretty unlikely… I laughed, my wife laughed, Google Home laughed.

      • +1

You do know that they have technology that filters certain key words (currently used on phone calls and any internet calls) and Alerts the NSA or other intelligence agencies.

I'm certainly sure they can modify it to be used on voice activated devices

        • +5

Not sure if this is true or not, but I heard ASIO filter this site for the key words KFC and McFlurry so they can get the latest bargains.

  • Is there even any point to this now that the mini is out?

    • +2

I think the speaker is much better?

    • +2
      • Cheers mate.

My main use will be home automation and playing the odd song, and after hearing the difference, the Mini should work fine (and it's a lot smaller / discrete too).

      • wait so this original Google home doesnt have AUX input either? is the music playback via wifi or bt only?

Will this be an Australian plug?

    • looks to be a US plug

  • I think the post is a plug for Shopmonk not Australia. (US plug sadly)

  • still on sale and my tracking shows delivery tomorrow. if that is the case. cant complain!

  • Does anyone know if this one has an American or Australian accent?

  • +1
