are we guaranteed riots and fighting amongst customers?

    • i thought that's standardized nowadays at aldi? hahaha… :P

    • +15

      I know right!
I have to call out props to the manager of the Aldi store at Eden Rise in Berwick, Victoria, though.
He comes out to the line of customers and tells them how many of the 'high value' items that he has received. He brings with him tickets for those items and asks who is in the line for which item and on a 'first come, first served basis' gives tickets to those customers.
It makes things a lot more orderly and there is no rushing and people pushing each other out of the way…yes, there are always those who try to push through to grab a ticket but the crowd in general adopts and accepts the store manager's sense of fairness.
You can't go in and grab a high value item and bring it to the counter because if you don't have a ticket the cashier wont sell you the item.
I got one of the egg chairs a couple of weeks back - the store only go 5. Also that time they only got 1 of the 6 burner BBQs.
Yes, I probably cheekily jumped on your first in line post but I reckon the guy does a great job at this store.

  • How much is the split system air con? The aldi website just says coming soon.

    • $599 but only 2.3kw

      • Yeah I was hoping for sub $500 for that size.

      • Plus more $$ for installation… unfortunately.

        • +1

Yeah something like $1K including install would have been nice

They did an offer including install with toilets last year so it’s not unprecedented

      • Does anybody know if this will be a ‘brand name’ unit? Is anybody seriously considering it if it’s not a known brand?

    • +3

Honestly if its $600 then maybe go for a better brand. Got my fujitsu 2.5 KW for $600ish after cashback and promos couple months back. You'll still be paying for an install $400-800 no matter what brand you go for. Also the better brand will be more efficient in the long term which would save you electricity cost.

      • +1

Good guys recent 20% sale had some reasonable prices for air con

Kelvinator was $527 and has the same specs as the more expensive brands (5 year warranty, 5 star energy rating etc).

        • Yep, got the kelvinator 2.5kw from that sale. Very quiet and no complaints so far, other than non back lit remote.

  • Curious about the ceiling fans as I am thinking of getting some… there's no mention of wall control plate, so I'm guessing if you are replacing an existing light fitting it will use the same cables in the roof?

Not sure how traditional fan/lights work with wall control plate as I would have assumed it would have needed 2 lines of power cable between wall & roof (one for fan power, one for light power)(????)

I'm no expert but if the right person is reading this feel free to enlighten me :)

    • Are you thinking to diy install ?

I'm not helping here. Just want to know more as well.

How much does it cost to get someone to install ?

      • +1

Yeah thinking DIY, as my mother paid for electricians to install and it wasn't cheap… I've changed light fittings in the past, so if it uses existing cabling I'll be fairly confident to do it myself.

SAFETY NOTE: For anyone doing anything electrical DIY, turn off your power mains!

        • +1

I'm not saying it's hard, but changing over anything hardwired legally requires an electrical licence and if anything goes wrong with the work, ie, a fire because of it, insurance won't pay out.

        • @Brouw3r:

This, but honestly it's not hard to do.

        • +2

Don't JUST turn off the mains, you should be confirming there is no current coming from any lines you're getting close to touching as sometimes you could get a nasty surprise if somethings not grounded properly or there's capacitors around.

        • If the fan has a light it will need 2 live wires.
Definitely get an electrician to wire it up for you…

        • @xywolap: The light can't be switched individually. It is one switch for fan and light.

        • @leTintin:
Yes, they vary.. If the wall switch has seperate fan and light control then it will need 2 live wires… Anyway.. electrician job. Oh, and dont nail the fan up like someone has mentioned… screws are a must.

        • The difference between a light fitting and a fan is that the fan will pull itself out of the ceiling and land on your head if you don't do it right.

      • +3

Having a ceiling fan installed tomorrow for $80 - not including the fan.

    • +3

the cieling fan comes with a remote .. on the remote is the light on off switch

so all the electrician has to do is mount the fan where your existing light is, might have to nail some support if its not there to hold the fan.

you do not need to run new wires, the light switch should always be on and you control the light and fan with the remote.

      • Cool, thanks for confirming.

Yeah, so that makes we wonder if Aldi are selling them do they expect people to be getting electricians to install them or do it yourself. As a disclaimer to cover themselves though I guarantee the packaging will state "to be installed by a qualified electrician".

        • +6

Legally, you are not allowed to DIY

        • @rdhupar: OK, if that's the law I'll leave it at that then. Thanks.

        • +1

yes, previously i got an electrician to install mine, just call around for some quotes. 100 odd is not worth you risking your life and doing it dodgy with all the other risks. and you will save money from air cons as fans use less power.

im not sure what the warranty is on these, but the ones you buy from other places, they only give u warranty if you get an electrician to do it, make sure you get their license number as they ask for it.

        • @hippyhippy: I certainly will shop around, pretty sure my mother was charged around $200 per fan, but would be happier for $100 per fan.

        • @bassiveguitar: It takes less than an hour per fan so definitely not worth paying more than $80-100 for each fan. Put an ad on one of those sites that get the tradies to bid for your work. Likely to get lower quotes. :)

        • @rdhupar: Awesome, thanks :)

        • @bassiveguitar:
That is red hot.. did it include the fan/light as well?

        • @xywolap: I don't believe it did. Think she was ripped off pretty badly.

      • +2

Correct. I replaced mine with similar ones and no need for new cabling. The remote controls both.

      • +2

I experience the joys of a remote controlled light/fan every year when we visit the in-laws. It is the biggest pain in the a** setup I have ever encountered. Walk in the dark room, flick the light switch - nothing. Have to dig around to find the stupid remote to turn the light on. ARGHGH

        • +1

That would be annoying but thankfully these ones work differently, when you turn the light switch on the light comes on - every time without fail, and they are very bright.

        • @leTintin: same for mine. Have to use the remote to turn the fan on but the light always turns on with the switch.

    • +2

I have the Aldi Fan and its fan-tastic for the price, its just hooked up to the light power…. its all controlled in the fan by the remote so it only needs one power wire (and the neutral).

      • So it's just 240v? No problem with the DC AC thing?

Any idea if I can mount it in a concrete roof?

        • DC motor, but still 240v AC supply.

Concrete ceiling mounting shouldn't be a problem if you've already got power there but you'll probably need your own fixing gear suited to the job.

(I don't have one of these though, no idea if you are replacing a light fitting whether you can just use the existing anchors but you'll want to make sure the weight difference won't be a problem)

  • What's the go with a 'smoker' that runs on gas? I thought the point of a smoker was that wood was supposed to burn?

    • +3

There will be a woodchip bin built into the gas smoker.

      • +1

Right so you're effectively using gas to burn wood?

        • +3

Pretty sure that's how the power industry works …

        • +2

I guess the argument is that it's easier to control the temperature with gas while still being able to get that smoked tasted on the meat.

        • +4

          @Morphine:
No, it uses money to buy politicians.

        • +2

I have one - it just heats the wood to a temp where it smokes, but no flame.

It works very well. You can also remove the smoke unit and use it as a gas-powered oven up to 200'C

        • The wood is seperated from the gas. The gas heats the wood to something below combustion temps which causes smoke.

        • Had provides the heat to cook, Wood chips are in a tray and the indirect heat causes the smoke.

    • +1

I've had one of these for about 5 years. It's bloody brilliant for the money. We've had some great cooks with ours. Ribs and smoked chicken are two faves in our household. You won't know it's cooked on gas. The smoke setup produces the real deal. Few would be able to tell the difference to a wood burning smoker. It's a great intro to real smoke BBQ. So much so that I'm pondering upgrading to a bigger gas smoker so I can do whole briskets. This unit would struggle to fit a whole brisket.

  • BBQ looks interesting, does anyone have it or something similar?

    • MY mate got it the last time these were on sale. Pretty decent size, looks pretty cool, PITA to build (and im generally pretty good at assembly). Never used it though, so im sorry i cannot comment.

I'd imagine the stainless steel would get old, fingerprinted and non-shiny very quickly.

      • Baby oil is the secret to keeping Stainless clean.

        • +2

I use this stuff but wouldn't be surprised if it's essentially the same thing.

        • +1

Baby oil is scented, use mineral oil as it is the same just without the perfume.

    • +1

I bought the 6 burner version of the same BBQ a few weeks ago. This one is essentially exactly the same minus two burners. It is absolutely brilliant for the price and you won't find anything out there in the same price range with the same quality. It takes a while to put together but isn't hard at all. Allow a good couple of hours.

I keep a few microfiber cloths handy and wipe it down regularly and it stays nice and clean.

  • Any Storck Knoppers?

    • +1

      settle down Tommy

  • +2

Bunnings have an ARLEC DC Fan/LED Light in their everyday range @ $169 anyway.

    White/Black/Silver

Less Lumens from the light (850 Lumen, 4000K). Not dimmable, though not sure the ALDI one is dimmable or not.

    • +1

Good find. These kind of fans have come down a lot. Almost makes me think it was in response to the Aldi ones a year ago. No the Aldi one isn't dimmable either.

  • +2

Can anyone who's previously purchased a tent from Aldi comment on its durability / how it's holding up since you purchased it?

    • I haven't purchased it but after using a pop up tent I wouldn't go back to a normal one. Too much of a hassle imo. I got the pop up from K-mart. 3 person for around $70 at the time I believe.

    • my friend has one of these tents. I found it a pretty crappy tent because the front "room" is just a flyscreen that you can't sleep under. This means that it is really a one room tent.

      • +4

I don't think the front room is really intended to be for sleeping; more a reasonably waterproof place to dump shoes, bags and other things that you'd prefer not to be huddled up next to at night. My question was about durability; in other words, does it feel like it's going to last for a while or is it just disposable single use garbage?

I only ask because 2.8m x 3.0m of floor space sounds quite appealing for my nearly 2m frame. I have to sleep diagonally across our existing tent so am keen to upgrade.

        • Yeah i've only seen it the once so i am not sure on quality sorry. at least aldi have a guarantee if your not happy though

    • Just about to ask the same thing. I'm assuming Aldi has sold this particular one before..

    • +2

Looks like I'm just going to have to turn up on the 28th and see for myself. Probably not the best place to ask my original question given that 1 cent (or free for your personal details) USB peripherals from China are the things that get people most excited in the OzBargain community.

      • Well, given how little stock Aldi carries of this sort of thing, it's fair to say that probably only a handful of OzBargainers would actually have one (depending how many years they've sold it), and you can't expect every single one of them to be watching this post…

    • +1

Bought this same tent from Aldi a few years ago. Its OK for the money.

I fit a full sized porta-cot, single camping mattress and a double mattress in main compartment without anyone being up against the canvas.

Held up great to rain and isn't to bad to erect once you get the hang of it.

I've only used mine 4 or 5 times but cant complain.

      • Thanks, sounds like it's worth a look if it's held up for a few years and hasn't fallen apart while it's been stored.

      • How long do you reckon it takes to setup

        • I can do it in about 30 mins between beers without assistance.

  • Beacon Lighting has a similar ceiling fan with light with remote for $149
    https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/airfusion-quest-ii-132cm-f…

    • +1

Similar in looks maybe but specs are quite different. 3 speed, IR (not RF) remote, AC, light globes not included, etc.

      • Have to be pretty rare for Beacon to be cheaper wouldn't it?

(I do have referral cards for 15% off there if anyone wants em btw, but they are physical cards you need to present in store.)

        • That Beacon item is an AC current fan. The Aldi one is DC(more efficient). which is typically more expensive at the likes of Beacon.

        • @Flash_Bang:

Yep, proving my point I think ;)

      • [@leTintin], so you're saying the Aldi one has RF remote? How responsive is it, i.e. how long does the unit take to respond to the button presses? Thanks.

        • +1

Yes it's RF (433mhz). It responds pretty much instantly in my experience. The range is surprising too, it works through walls and even opposite sides of the house. It takes one of those small 12v remote batteries which are easy to replace.

        • @leTintin: Thanks, great stuff, this means I can hook it up to my home automation from another room!

        • +1

@zecoj: Yes definitely, if you can work out the protocol, or hack the remote! And the good thing is you can control the fan and the light.

  • Anyone know anything about that ceiling fan? Can you change the light to "warm yellow"? Is it a standard LED?

I'm researching ceiling fans and my understanding is that lighting is the biggest problem (if you use one to replace a previously good light in your place)

I want a STUPIDLY bright ceiling fan for my lounge, bedroom preferably too
Almost all of them are far too dim and "hospital white" blows :(

EDIT: FWIW I think it's otherwise a pretty good deal spec wise - I think 18W LED was the brightest other places claimed - although I could've sworn I saw 65W motors being kinda standard, maybe I'm wrong?

    • +1

They are definitely going to be bright enough for you I think, the problem is though you can't change the 'globes', they are surface mount LEDs like you would see in a LED torch. They were warm white last year which I prefer, the catalogue seems to say these are cool white this time.

      • So definitely not replaceable?
How bright was it overall, acceptable as primary light source.

It's a good price but good damn white is ugly

    • The one from Beacon Lighting allows you to fit your own globes. But it's AC vs DC.

If I'm assuming right, I think the DC fans will have LED panels whereas AC fans will take normal globes. Is that correct?

      • I got the impression globe ones become somewhat directional, based on the fitting location.

  • +1

Does anyone know anything about the quality of the Cast Iron Cook Set? I would like to grab that for car camping trips.

    • +2

I have the cast iron cook set. Had it for over a year now, and used it on many bush camp trips.

I can't fault it. The items are well made, thick, and nice and heavy. Make sure that you season all items before using them, and remember to oil them after use. The wooden box it comes in is well made. I've seen a similar size Dutch oven of equivalent quality the same price as the whole Aldi set.

If there was something I'd change, it would be the size of the jaffle iron, which is a fraction small. The full set is quite heavy, but it is a cast iron cooking set…

You can't go wrong. I'm happy with mine and would buy it again. Buy one if there's one in your local store.

    • +2

Looking a fraction closer at the picture in the ad, there are a few small differences to the one I bought last year:
      - Kit includes a kettle, mine didn't.
      - the two skillets have a wooden handle, mine are cast iron. The benefit of wood is that it'll be cooler to touch, however, you'll need to be more careful to not burn them
      - the jaffle iron has two sides to it, and may be bigger overall, which can't be a bad thing.

Overall it still looks very good.

  • How does the $399 stainless steel bbq compare to the Bunnings $299 Jumbuck 4 Burner Hooded Stardom BBQ with Side Burner?
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/jumbuck-4-burner-hooded-stardom-…

    • +1

The Aldi BBQ is made out of better quality materials, has double walled stainless steel hood and doors, and has stainless steel burners. You will find the Jumbuck will be much more flimsy and prone to rusting out and have inconsistent heat.

I was looking at the Jumbuck a while ago and they don't get great reviews. I went with the 6 burner version of the Aldi BBQ and I can't fault it.

  • +3

    Hi Everyone,
With regards to the DC Fans, I recently purchased 2 bunnings Arlec DC ones yesterday and installed both knowing about the Aldi fan sale too.
They look exactly identical however a few small things. (besides the swivel ball thing being black instead of white). I chose the bunnings because I have a good record with their warranty.

The arlec has a 30w motor with 6 speeds (If you get the arlec in white, theres an older model with a 25w motor, the box will be green not blue. No one will tell you this, but i emailed Arlec and they confirmed the earlier white ones came with a 25w DC motor.
The Aldi one seems to be 5 speeds? but has a more powerful 35w motor.

The DC driver of the Arlec, seems to have the LED driver and the DC converter for the motor in one unit.

The Arlec fan can be wired into the light switch, because once it is powered, the light automatically turns on. It even says in the manual to install it on a switch.
Sleeping with the fan on without the light can be done by switching off the light via remote.

For me the Arlec fans light 12w isn't bright enough. I'm going to have to put down lights. I wouldn't think 18w is even bright enough, I'm too used to about 28-35w of LED @ roughly 100 lumens/watt)

The fan being AC/DC has nothing to do with the light fixture on it being DC LED. In fact, if you're handy with DIY, you can add your own ebay LED circular fixture to this fan (if the current light stops working).

Installation, most people would require a batten attached to the ceiling joist. The hard part is getting dirty in the roof space. The installation under the ceiling is easy peasy.

Another note, the way these things are packaged, make sure you take out the glass light diffuser and put it somewhere safe first. These things crack/break easily. Especially if you take out the motor and put it back and accidentally hit it.

Last edit : The light design on these fans create a massive blade shadows on the ceiling!!

EDIT LAST TIME FOR REAL : I can't tell by the Aldi remote , but the Arlec has a sleep timer so it turns off automatically. (it looks like the Aldi one also has this because there are so many buttons). And these remotes are RF not IR (so can't be cloned by universal TV remote :(

    • Do you know if there are brighter fans available?

      Thanks for the write up.

How much is a warm yellow light kit?

    • Wait I just realised DC vs AC, does that mean, I can't just remove an existing light fitting and have someone wire in the fan? Need a converter of some sort?

      • It just hooks up to normal 240v AC. You don't have to worry about converting to DC, it does this internally.
