Thanks op. I don't have a pool but I'll be buying the Hy-Clor 4kg Calcium Increaser.
Cause an ozbargain member told me back in Jan can use it to make DIY closet dehumidifiers.

Just be careful, not nice to inhale the stuff. :)

Cheaper at Big W. Baracuda Calcium Increaser 4kg. $19
      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/baracuda-calcium-increaser-4…

      • Thanks for the heads up! I ended up getting the Hy-Clor though cause Bunnings is more convenient for me.
The Baracuda has 10g/1kg of "other non hazardous materials" ? Probably something inert I guess. Will probably grab that brand next time cause it comes in a bucket.

  • Isn’t the Aldi hose 10m?…. but still a good buy.

With the stabiliser I notice we are paying $5 for a 2 litre bucket if you buy the hard pack rather than the soft pack…. but all savings gratefully taken. Am I getting too Ozbargain and quibbling over small amounts?

    • Yes the Aldi hose is 10m for $39.99, which is $4.00/m. Bunnings don't have a 10m hose so appear to have discounted the 9m hose to be just under Aldi's $4.00/m.
I already have the soft pack of stabiliser at home, not sure why you'd buy the hard pack over it to be honest.

      • my mum just bought a new house with a pool and I've been tasked looking after the pool. I bought the stabilizer from bunnings and that stuff doesn't dissolve at all, the powder just clumps up. Do all stabilisers do that or just the bunnings/Hy-Clor stuff?

        • It is a really fine powder, I usually try to dissolve it in a bucket (old chlorine container) and stirring with a stick before adding to pool, then it takes a couple days to dissolve fully. Still usually end up with clumps that take a while to dissolve.

I haven't got them infront of me but I'm fairly certain the instructions state to use a bucket filled with pool water to dissolve the powder and then empty the bucket in different areas of the pool with the filter running to help disperse it.

        • They all dissolve slowly.

Either use the bucket method as described, but this leaves the water cloudy. or pour it into a sock/stocking and put it in the skimmer.

It will dissolve in less than 24 hours and without clouding the pool.

        • @petestrash:
Don't put it in the skimmer. It tends to stick in the sand filter and needs to be widely diluted. For ip to 24 hours it can cause the pump pressure to raise.
Backwash and rinse before adding it to keep the pump pressure down. Dilute in a bucket best as you can and disperse in the pool. Try to brush through the clumps.

        • @Flattop: I didn't say pour it into the skimmer. Pour it into a sock/stocking. it will slowly release into the water and pass through the filter. Have been using this method for over 30 years without any issues. If you're really paranoid, just run the pump on recirc for 24 hours, bypassing the filter.

    • You can buy an empty 2l bucket at bunnings for $3.68 if you need one - cheaper than buying the hard pack.

I think the Baking Soda is cheaper at Costco

Can confirm that it is! $10.80 for a 6kg pack

  • Anyone have some experience in terms of quality / strength of the HyChlor brand of chemicals compared to the local pool shop's home branding of their own?

    • Should be identical. Just be wary of 2-in-1 products as you will eventually end up with too much of something like cyanuric acid.
