Terrible time to be in Japan unless you're going to Hokkaido.
Steaming hot all August.

  Indeed. It usually rains all month in June. Then steaming hot with unbelievable humidity in July, especially August.
  Any other time is usually good in Japan.
  November for the fall (leaf colors), early April for the cherry blossoms, Jan-March for the snow.

For what it's worth, if you're going with 2 or more and planning to take checked luggage, it works out cheaper to buy the club Jetstar as you get 20% off luggage and seats.
