Thanks OP, perfect for the folks.

    • -4

totally agree.. it's not suited for daily average phone users… perhaps for backup

      • -3

        perhaps for backup

Honestly i would rather invest that $10 per month on a higher mobile plan (with more Gigs) than have a sim lying around for backup

        • +22

Well its actually a really good deal for someone like me. I use about 1mb p/m. I'm on prepaid and am almost always within Wifi. If i had a gig I would use it more to google things when I'm out (and not in range of free wifi) but I doubt I'd need over a few hundred mb.

But I'm actually not getting this because I don't socialize much and contact people mostly through wifi so I'm on Aldi Prepaid and I pay about $2p/m.

        • @amrdeus: same. Mostly on WiFi not much socializer. This is great for me but need to go through all my prepaid sim I bought on sale from supermarket first.

      • +2

If you want a backup SIM, Amaysim pay as you go has zero monthly fees.

I find this is the perfect solution for people living overseas who regularly spend time in Australia. When in Australia pick the appropriate plan, and when you leave switch back to pay as you go. This enables you to keep the same number for each trip.

    • +11

Wow, I must be very under-average since I use a few hundred MB a month max. What do you guys do with all that data? Watch streaming video on the train?

In any case just keep less than $10 in your account and they won't be able to debit $10. But of course you will have to go cold turkey without data which might be more painful.

      • -2

But of course you will have to go cold turkey without data which might be more painful.

True, happened to me once. Used my 3GB data in 24 days. Tried to go cold turkey but couldn't resist. I then upgraded to the 10GB plan which is perfect and exactly the amount of data i need per month

      • +1

I agree, not a big user of data myself, and know a few people like that.

        • What do you guys do with all that data?

Browse OzBargain … We cant afford to miss a bargain :)

      • +1

What do you guys do with all that data?

Twitter, which means lots of images, animated GIFs, and clicking on news sites and other random stuff. A lot of websites chew up a massive amount of data these days unfortunately. I'm always surprised how much data is used up — I barely scrape by on my current 1GB/month plan, and I don't even go on YouTube. My usage pattern is typically the daily 40-minute train commute to and from work.

        • +3

I suppose I should be grateful to people like you who push the envelope making data cheaper in the long run.

        • -1

When did the world become the SPAM folder?

not sure why easterncultres post is negged, its still a fair comment…

      • -3

Your data usage is only a few hundred MBs in this information age? I've got 60Gb mobile data allowance per month but I always struggle to make it last 'till the end of month.

I use it everyday during my commute for USEnet, FreeNet, I2P, FAI, any browsing session with TOR, sometimes Youtube and Spotify.

    • +1

I easily use up my 16GB a month from KoganMobile but recognise that a huge chunk of the population doesn't need much data. The elderly being the most obvious example. This is a great deal for them, especially if they are anxious about going prepaid.

      • ?? The elderly ?? since when the "youth' have priority on useless streaming crap…:)

    • +1

If you know you need more than 1 GB per month you definitely should not sign up for a 1 GB plan.

I know a lot of people for whom this plan is just perfect.

  • +1

Perfect for the kids, thanks OP.

    • +2

make you you disable auto topup

The stories i hear, you are heading towards a bill of a few hundred if you trust your kid to use mobile data

      • +3

My kids go from home WiFi to school WiFi, very little data use, this is the perfect plan.

        • +1

Streaming video on the bus is what got me with my kids

        • +21

@thatonethere: I have a very simple agreement with my kids: Go over quota and I will switch you to a plan without data :-).

        • +1

@mathew42: I have another solution - I'm about to give my son an iPhone 3G I bought reconditioned last year as a temporary phone. It's in mint condition but trying to access the net on it is an exercise in frustration! Websites just aren't built for it anymore. Plus no apps work with it. So as a phone for purely making and receiving calls it's perfect

        • @enzso: a $29 phone from Coles would probably also suffice ;)

        • +2

@mathew42: I have a better agreement set between my kids and Kogan: Go over data and Kogan will switch your data off until the next month :0

      • Agree - and set a data limit on the phone. My son watched 3GB of youtube one day at home without realising he didn't have wifi on.

      • i dont think they auto top up for when you go through your data. only when you've reached your 28 days

    • Additional data: $10 for 1GB. Could be expensive.

        • Pretty sure you could just turn off data usages in account. Simpler option, if you spend over limit you won't have phone data until you could afford one yourself.

        • @MrEMC:
The app turns data off automatically and is pin protected so the kids cannot go over their limit.

        • @nocure:

They can just uninstall the app.

  • +4

Perfect for my parents too, especially seeing as Amaysim are one of the few cheap plan providers that have international roaming.

  • -1

    Perfect for smart watches.

    • +7

My parents would be lucky to get through that a month. Suits them fine.

My mum just checks fb occassionally, weather, emails etc.

She's not sitting on Youtube all day. this plan is enough for her.

      • -4

you would have been better off with the amaysim groupon deal then

New Customers $19.95 for 6 Renewals of amaysim Unlimited 2GB ($3.32 per 28 Days) @ Groupon

        • +3

Not ongoing though. I would assume he doesn't want to be assisting his parents with changing plans every 6 months…

        • -7

          @dyl:

assisting his parents with changing plans every 6 months

takes less than 10 sec to change the plan

        • +1

you would have been better off with the amaysim groupon deal then

Following the deal link above, there's an option on this deal to upgrade to 2.5GB for extra $10:

Upgrade to UNLIMITED 2.5GB and get an extra 1.5GB for only $10 more.

$20 for 2.5GB compared to groupon's $19.95 for 2GB. Sorry, misread the Groupon deal.

        • @moocher:

groupons deal was $19.95 for the whole 6 renewals or $3.32 per 28 Days

        • @easternculture: Oh sorry my bad

        • @easternculture: less than 10 seconds….I would like to see that…every time I change plans there is always some stuff up which causes delays..

  • +3

Looks like they have restructured all their plans.
They have taken off international calling from their starter plans.
Intl calls start with 30$ per month with generous 5GB data.
It was 25$ earlier, but with 2GB only though.

    • Yeah, I noticed that as well. Sad for me because I used amaysim for international calls only.

      • But if you have an ongoing plan, it will continue as is.. right? I am on $25 unlimited calling and 1.5GB plan. It shouldn't be affected unless I opt to change it. I haven't received any auto-up(down)grade communication either.

    • Nice one.

I feel like rep could've been a bit more transparent with this. This (in its current format) reads more like it is a post for a new plan in addition to existing ones.

Out of curiosity does anyone have what the old plans looked like? Curious (for comparison sake)

      • Yes, I was on a $19.90 a month plan with them with 500MB and $19.90 of call credit.

  • +1

If we are on previous $25 plan with unlimited international calls, can we still recharge $25 to keep using that plan?

    • Interesting question. When they last restructured the plans, I had to manually change from $24.95 to $25 for the extra 0.5GB.

    • +1

If you’re an existing customer, you’re free to stay on your current plan with no change, or can switch to one of our new ones. It’s also worth noting you can change your plan at any point if your circumstances change later down the track - simple!

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/mobile/plans-and-network/lat…

      • If you use their 'free intl calls' feature heavily, it's better not to change plan for more data. I make heaps of intl calls so I don't care about 1-2GB less data.

  • Hi Op,
My father rarely uses his phone so that Pay As You Go option seems sweet. But on the off chance that he happens to use more than $10 a month, would I be able to switch over in a few months or is this a limited time thing?

    Thanks!

    • +1

It looks like their new lineup in plans so they will be around for a while.

    • same for me

  • $10 is very good plan, Amaysim is one of few low cost telecom offers international roaming and free Call forward (national call under unlimited plan).

  • +2

Hm… Kogan probably needs to revise their small plan very soon.

    • +5

And AldiMobile - their cheapest is $15 for 500MB (unlimited calls).

      • I'm on AldiMobile using this plan, but need to as Optus coverage is spotty at my place - need to go with Telstra network MNVO of which Aldi is the cheapest. If Aldi upped their data to 1Gb or dropped the price to $10pm, I would be happy. Both would be fantastic

      • No international calls included in Aldi plan though. I am on Amaysim $25 plan with unlimited intl calls to 10 countries. That's a super biggie.

        • How often are you calling 10 countries?

  • +1

folks, what the case if i use all the data before the end of the cycle? will the call/text still be available or will it auto debit another 10$?

  • +15

You lose almost a month in a year (29 days) with 28 day cycle rather than monthly billing. Not a criticism, just something the discerning 'Ozbargainerer' might consider.

    • +1

      Agree - 28 day cycle equals a 13 'month' year :)

      • +3

        Yep, $10.83 / month, or 8% more than a $10 / month plan

    • +5

Actually, exactly this was the reason why Amaysim lost me as a customer.

I was happy with $9.90 for 1GB per 30 days (with no free calls, mind you).
When they changed it to 28 days while rounding up the price to $10, I started looking for other options.

Found Kogan, and since I've started with them their 365 day plan has improved twice in less than a year. THAT's how customer retention works.

      • +1

Not sure about that as I am on this 365 days plan as well. Let's hope that Kogan will improve $ wise, otherwise I need to pay $152.10 for another 365days ($12.68/month) early next year. Their current plan won't keep me as I don't think I need that extra 0.5G they gave earlier… When it comes to mobile phone service, a billing cycle of 365 days is really a long time… :)

        • Fair enough in that case. And considering amaysim has included phone calls now it's not a bad deal anymore at that price.

Nevertheless, shortening the billing cycle was a stupid move in my opinion, it's like stating that they believe their customers are idiots.

        • +2

@calus: Jeenee have 1GB per month for $9.90 on the Optus Network https://www.jeenee.org.au

  • +3

well i prefer international calls over data as my usage is hardly 1gb per month..

This plans are not useful, i prefer to pay less.. Atleast they should add international calls to $20 plan.

    • well i prefer international calls over data as my usage is hardly 1gb per month..

Even if you add $10 a GB extra data, 'free intl calls to 10 major countries' is still a huge biggie. A lot of customers must have got onto Amaysim because of it. If they remove this feature, the new customers will decrease in number though the existing ones may continue to be on those plans offering free intl calls until they totally withdraw them even for the existing customers.

  • -1

This would make existing customers very embarassed to pay more and suffer from less data…

Since most carriers now offer a bigger data plan at a lower price, can amaysim follow the trend to double or triple our data?

    • Just switch to the new plans then? I don't think there is lock-ins whatsoever.

      • Yes I agree with that. You can easily switch to the new plans. I have done it myself couple of times just make sure you switch towards the end of your existing cycle as the plan tends to start immediately and if you have any data left would be gone.

  • +5

Great deal if you need unlimited calls. I put my mum on OVO as she makes about 3 calls a month. OVO is also a 30 day billing period which makes OVO ~$10 cheaper a year.

    • +2

My only annoyance with ovo is they don't have an app like amaysim does to check data but other than that they're great.

    • Did they offer free intl calls to 10 countries like Amaysim?

  • Hi mobilemenia

    Sounds a good deal.
Is there something similar with Unlimited international calls to the usual 10 countries?

    • Cheapest Plan with Unlimited 10 countries starts with $30/month (Amaysim or Lyca)

  • +4

Jeenee is an alternative - as long as you are willing to make a 12 month commitment.

Jeenee - per month. Amaysim - per 28 days.

    Jeenee - $10 setup fee.

    1g - $9.90
    2g - $14.90
    2.5g - $20.

    • Thank you. Just what I needed. Have signed up.

    • Sounds like a good plan if someone doesn't need intl calls.

  • +1

I use about 8G a month mostly for investment purpose on the run
Reliability and coverage is more important for me so I usually go Telstra 4G… I don’t make much call, data is all I ever use

    • -2

Reliability and coverage is more important for me

i have noticed that Optus (amaysim) have heaps of dead spots on the way from Bankstown to the city via train

  • Excellent deal, currently on Coles $20, considering switching

  • +2

Great deal. FiL has his first smartphone. Was PAYG. Was looking at the Woolies plans at $13.50/$18 for 500Mb/1.5Gb. This option is PERFECT. $130pa, no commitment and a Gb/mth will be HEAPS for him. Bought a $2 SIM, ported him across - which took about 20min. Done AND dusted. Thanks to OP

    • You ported the number yourself?

      • +1

        Username partially checks out

  • Thinking to leave TPG 1.5gb $17/month. But need international calls, otherwise this Look perfect deal for me.

  • I don't use telcos with 28 day cycle, it just p!sses me off that much. Even if total price is cheaper. Only for 3 months every four years is a 28 day cycle acceptable.

    • +1

Even if total price is cheaper
