  • AU plug ?

    • If it's anything like my Nitecore D4 it uses a figure 8 plug (IEC 60320 C7) so you can just use one of the ones you'll probably have laying around the house or pick one up for around $5 from officeworks or jaycar.

Where do people buy batteries from

    • +1

What type of batteries are you after - ordinary NiMh, low-self-discharge NiMh, lithium-ion, or lithium-iron-phosphate?

      • Just ordinary nimh AA

        • +1

buy from Ikea, their Ladda batteries are low self discharge batteries, which may be rebadged Eneloops from Japan at a fraction of the price

        • @haz: Someone did a teardown recently of the Ladda batteries and found that they are rebadged eneloops. Can't find the link though.

        • I have had good results with the batteries from Aldi, AA and AAA are $5.99 per pack of four batteries. Just don't mistakenly buy alkaline batteries, Aldi sell them too. The NiMh batteries aren't available at all of the checkouts, go to an unused checkout to get the batteries first, before you line up.

Damn in 2014 bought nitecore d4 for usd29 should have waited a while

    • No, D4 is a significantly better charger. Also, had you waited, you probably would have spent more than the difference, buying non-rechargeable batteries.

  • for those that have one already, how long do they take to charge say 4 AA's of 2000mAh capacity each.

I'm estimating 5 odd hours based on web site information of 4x0.375mAh.

We bought the Varta 15 minute charger/batteries around ten years ago and the charger has died.

    • It's more than that, because charging NiMh batteries is only about 70% efficient. To charge a 2000mAh battery, you need to push about 2800mAh in. 2800/375 is 7.47 hours.

If you have previously used a 15-minute charger on the batteries, they have almost certainly been damaged. Anything charging in 1 hour or less will overheat the batteries, so you will probably find the batteries have much lower capacity than stated on the label.

        yeah to damage.
I understand about 1C having researched RC car and LiPo batteries a couple of years ago. Had no idea when we bought the Varta stuff all those years ago.

found this today - quite amusing

        .

        • It is very amusing. Dave from EEVblog seems really excited about everything he discovers - but he throws in a good amount of sarcasm too, so sometimes it's hard to know when he is being serious, or taking the mickey out of something.

  • received one today, it gets pretty hot when charging nimh aa and aaa, is that expected?
