Brilliant router, however my 1st one had to be replaced by Asus since the wireless radio stopped working, so I would recommend buying from a local seller for a local warranty. Not sure if Asus Australia will cover warranty from Gearbest

I wouldn't buy anything over $20 from GearBest.

  • If only the ebay sellers didnt jack up their prices for these when there was the 20% off offer last week, the local stock would be around this price too

Gearbest model doesn't come with Asus 3 year Australian warranty. I purchased this model few months back from wireless1 due to a warranty issue. Excellent router for home use. I use updated/ modified firmware from https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca.

  • Is this the pick of routers at the moment, or better off going for something that can be part of a mesh. HFC NBN coming soon and looking to upgrade. Guess it wouldn't hurt to maybe have a VDSL2 modem in it too just in case we move to an area with FTTN rather than HFC.

    • I saw the other day that asus modems and routers have an update to turn on mesh.
I will try to find it.

  • Is GearBest going to offer some real serious deals on next Saturday?

  • Had nothing but issues with Gearbest. Placed a total of 4 orders. When they eventually arrived, 2 of the orders were missing items (they had not been sent as the delivery list also did not have these items listed). On further enquiry I was offered a refund. Then when I accepted I was told that the items were now in stock?? Mind you, this is 6+ weeks after my initial purchase. After multiple emails, I have decided that even if they have the odd bargain, I am going to steer well clear of these guys.

  • I’m actually looking for a new AC router, as my current one I don’t think is up to scratch. Looking for something which will give out a decent stable signal but not break the bank? Like sub $150? Preferably from an Aussie seller with good customer service in case something goes wrong? (I.e. not MSY)

    • IMHO TP-Link Archer C2300 is pretty good value.
      Only a 3x3 but with a newer BCM4906 1.8Ghz 2 cores CPU
      1625Mbps on 5GHz and 600Mbps on 2.4GHz with NitroQAM
$166 delivered after 20% off plus P5OZZIE coupon code.

Just my two cents on this router. I’ve been running this router for about 2 years now.

Initially the firmware that comes with the router wasn’t great at handling big workloads (running three VPN clients, around 50 connected client ips, dual wireless configuration). The CPU would often sit around 100% on one core (which you can monitor through the ASUS web interface or app which is cool). However when I flashed to the Merlin firmware it’s been rock solid ever since. Merlin firmware is a third party software that runs on ASUS routers and unlocks the potential of this router with the added benefit that you keep all the exisiting interface and features. CPU sometimes spikes at 100% but it’s few and far between, and never remains high which says memory management has been fixed with Merlin.

Overall, incredibly powerful router hardware spec wise but only useful if you require low latency/ heavy workloads and are prepared to flash to Merlin.
