If you haven't heard about the activation issues some users are having with Optus sims there is some discussion in the comments on this expired deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/336287

Would be interested to hear from anyone who has had issues recently (e.g. within the last fortnight)

    • +1

My issues were from over a month ago.

It should be noted Optus is outsourcing some of their operations (specifically, 170 network management center operators) to Nokia

I have to wonder if some of the screw-ups related to SIM activation, number porting and other SIM related issues had something to do with network ops.

      • are you sure you're doing it correctly?? a friend and I both activated 10 sim cards each and for both of us it worked fine :/

      • Whilst I have no problems with SIM activation on optus. I've gone through around 7 Optus Sims in the last 6 months. Thou they seem to get deactivated pretty fast, like after 2 months. They are supposed to be useable for 6 months after you are out of credit. I find this with Sims that I've not used for a few months.

        Lucky they are disposable numbers.

        • It's probably 90 days with Optus. And anyway you weren't going to recharge them.

        • @greenpossum:

True but I needed an Optus SIM to make a free call to Optus to get support on getting data to work on an Optus mobile internet sim.

    • I've bought a few of the $30 sim's recently (last one around 2 weeks ago) and I've had no problems activating any of them.

    • The issues with accidently cancelled SIMs is now resolved. These new SIMs should not have any issues.

      • +2

These new SIMs should not have any issues.

Are you implying there might be SIM's out there from recent deals which may cause issues with activation ?

I am yet to activate mine from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331834
Can you help if I run in to issues with activation ?

      • +3

Rep, many of us here have issues with having not obtained real customer support nor a refund from Optus, having been burnt by these faulty SIMs.
Will you address this? There's a comment below where someone has given up seeking refund. So now it's on record that you acknowledge the fault, what are you going to do? Hopefully not just profit off every poor sod who has been stooged?

        • +2

I had the same experience, I put a refund request through Paypal. Sent back the faulty sim, however I realised that I did not have a tracking number for it. Could not upload this without a tracking number to Paypal so there goes the $5 I spent on that faulty sim.

      • +3

That's a lie. I ported my number. Optus couldn't get it working for a whole month. Couldn't even go elsewhere as my number was stuck in Optus system.. TIO are currently dealing with it.

      • +2

Seriously, any one smart enough to search to internet about Optus faulty SIM would know that this is an ongoing issue that goes back at least 2 years. I was stupid enough to not do some research before buying. I thought a company such as Optus would not run a scam. Boy am I wrong.

  • +2

What does it include? Do Optus SIM packs have an expiry?

    • +2

$40 credit and yes they have an expiry (usually unknown till it arrives from Optus)

in the past i have always had at least 1 month to around 18 month expiry.
      cheers

      EDIT: http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/plans

    • +4

a SIM pack may/may not be activated.

    • +2

      Wasted time.

    • +1

The recent sim packs I've been ordering from Optus all have a mid 2018 expiry on them.

They've recently started putting stickers on them saying you need to activate within 30 days from purchase but I'm not sure if this is actually enforced or not.

  • I usually use the optus online chat and ask a representative to activate it for me, works in 5 minutes and never had any problems. Maybe I'm just lucky.

    • I have had a glitch or two from Optus but these are OK as i never use for my main number :)
(to be clear always got activated within a few days…never bothered with chat just kept trying when i had time)

  • Consider the lack of your buyer protection not limited to the time wasted on attempting activating SIM, escalating disputes, and the cost to pay for return registered mail which is roughly $5 out of your pocket.

    • Would the neg voter care to respond with reason?

      • +3

        Sure…

The sim's we have been posted out for over a few months now have been all fine and I'm a bit sick of people getting on deals and slamming the deal because they've had a bad experience in the past (and often a long time ago) You made your point over a month ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/336287 but also the recent catch.com.au deals come to mind where people have just been having a go at the seller of the bargain…

        • +4

If you are going to make a claim like that, despite collective knowledge here, will you kindly link to some evidence?

Looking at Optus deals, I see no recent deals at all of posted SIMs that are being activated. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/brand/optus

Fact is the failure Optus has made is so concerning that mods felt each deal should include a warning.

I've been on ozbargain for seven years, and I stand by my comment that purchasing faulty Optus SIMs is the worst deal ever, primarily becuase you get hooked into endless beating around the bush, and the icing on the cake is no straight forward way to get a refund.

How would much time are people wasting to activate one SIM?
          1 purchase online
1 drive to post office to sign for
          2 failed attempts online
          1 googling around for troubleshooting
1 googling to find there's no live chat
          1 call to customer support
          1 trip instore
1 online activation of blank SIM
1 call to request credit transfer to blank
1 call as transfer failed and exceeded ETA
1 call to request refund as credit refused
1 credit card / PayPal claim as no refund

Stacks up to the worst PITA waste of time deal on ozbargain ever.

A far better deal, that delivers with absolute ease of instant succesful activation, and is cheaper too
16GB Data, Unlimited Calls, Texts for $4.90 @ Kogan https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/339722

        • @chyawala:

You and everyone else who's experienced similar issues have just been unlucky. I've purchased several of the Optus sims over the past few months and haven't had an issue with any of them. There is no evidence posted on OzBargin cause since the sim saga people have been told not to post the Optus sim deals and I've been buying them and using them quite happily.

All of the sims arrived in the mailbox the next day (via express post) and all of them sent have had an authority to leave on them (no signing needed). I've been able to go straight online and activate it instantly.

Whilst the Kogan deal is good, I use Kogan for my main number and find that the lack of roaming annoying factor this with the price only being that cheap for the first month makes it harder to use full time. After you've used the $4.90 it goes back to $49.90 which is not really a bargain.

  • +2

    Thanks snappy.

Touch wood, I have never had any issues activating Optus sims…

These deals are good for long life and making international calls :)

Thanks again for posting, I would most definitely have missed this one :)

  • +2

Good find for those with not much need for data.

But wow Optus plans (month to month) are not cheap. Cheapest one is $35 for 1.5GB + unlimited talk n text. Then up to $50 for 6GB.

  • +3

Don't bother unless you have plenty of time to get a charge back. Raised a PayPal dispute. No response from Optus. Escalated the dispute, no response from Optus to PayPal. PayPal had to get the money from Optus account for the refund.

    • Why did you raise a PP dispute ? Problems activating? How long did it take ?

      • +3

Faulty SIM that cannot be activated. Online and store rep gave me the round around and not willing to help. Talked to online rep, asked to go to store. Store rep were said since you bought it online, you need to talk to the online rep. Talked to online rep said cannot do anything and to go to store. Said credit on SIM cannot be transferred even if I have another active SIM. Raised a dispute as can't be bothered anymore.

        • +1

Argggh, thanks so much for the reply, I just bought 2, wish me luck :S

      • +1

Optus is just trying to get rid of all the faulty SIMs and hopefully most cannot be bothered to try to get a refund.

    • How long ago did you buy it?

I've bought several in the last 3 weeks and haven't had a problem with any of them.

      • End of August.

    • +2

same here… wasted time to deal with the optus staff to explain what's the issue, what i have tried, and what I want (i.e, transfer credit to a $2 sim)……
eventually I raised 3 PP disputes and took around 2 weeks to get money back…

      Never optus again

I bought the clearance Optus broadband sim from Optus, it was unable to active online and instore. Optus sent another sim in 2 days (startrack),still not able to active online. Went to store to active, the young lady there helped to active and port my main number to the broadband sim ( instead of using available number). I lost my credit from the previous number, unable to call, text due the number ported to a broadband sim. Back the store reverses the number, take 5 days…..
