Ironwolf 4TB $160.26 Austin Computers eBay WD Red 4TB sold out

741
PREZZY

EDIT:
And the 4TB's are all sold out. Austin Computer's other drives here

EDIT:
since posting it looks like Austin have done some mild price jacking, though to be fair, it's still slightly cheaper than last night's price at ~$203 pre-discount.
WD Reds are sold out, but if they come back the link is here.
Couple of Ironwolves left. Other sizes down below.

Original post:
Possibly the cheapest ever for the WD Red 4TB and close to cheapest ever for the Seagate Ironwolf 4TB. 4TB seems to be the sweet spot, and this breaks the $40/TB barrier ever so slightly. Both drives are pretty similar, choose whatever brand you have loyalty to. Other capacities available, not sure if they're particularly cheap/cost effective though. Prices went down a few bucks overnight, very sporting of Austin, would have worked out at $163 (if I recall?) at last night's prices and today's discount.

Ironwolf 4TB is also the same price at $156 link here

Here's a link to all of Austin Computer's HDD's for sale

WD Red 6TB is $247.2 after discount
Ironwolf 6TB is $231.2
WD Red 8TB is $319.2 sold out :(
No Ironwolf in 8TB size at time of posting.

@alexGoodwin: well a double layer blu ray is 50GB and I'm too lazy to get up and change discs, so I rip them all.
It starts with a 4-drive off the shelf appliance, then you start rolling your own custom linux box and before you know it you're planning a 10x 4TB server with a similarly sized backup machine because RAID =/= backup.
Parents, teach your kids not to play with servers. It only ends in tears.

        • Real men put all their critical data on RAID 0 arrays, because RAID is definitely backup, and RAID 0 is the safest of them all.

          lol

        • @serrin: I'm running my own server with WD reds and a lot of hard drives, so I kind of understand you.

Keep your eyes out for when something like this goes on sale again, I find the biggest issue with my storage needs to be that I run out of sata slots, so 4TB drives don't cut it, and these My Book Duos tend to sell cheaper than the bare hard drives (not in this case) and sell less during sales, probably due to many people not needing 16TB.

The drives are definitely WD Red drives and can be removed by pulling it out of the slot.

        • @airzone: Oh Jesus, I hope nobody takes you seriously 😂

        • @airzone: 0 is the coolest number so RAID 0 must be the best.

@BradleyDS2: Thanks for the tip, I am aware of the WD Reds in the mybook duos, but they haven't been cost effective for a while. I have a LSI RAID card crossflashed into IT mode. It supports 8 SATA devices out of the box, I have read that you can get cables that double the number of devices on certain SAS devices for a theoretical 16 devices per card, but I'm not sure if it's supported on that particular model and I haven't really looked that deeply into it. Between the Mobo SATA ports one card is more than enough, but for a 6 PCI-E slot ATX board you could populate it with 48 drives without using the mobo ports. Given that you effectively loose whole drives of storage with RAID 5/6 having more drives that are smaller is more economical, especially since 6TB+ sizes haven't really borne a massive drop in cost per TB. Although, granted, the risk of failure is an exponential of the number of drives.

        • @BradleyDS2: Heh, on more than one occasion have I argued with company execs about that very point. And on more than one occasion have I had to deal with a RAID card that freaked out and trashed the array connected to it.

4TB WD Red shows as out of stock

  • Cheers, got the WD Red 8TB, it was cheaper per GB than the newer WD Red 10TBs.

    • New Size are always going to be alot more expensive but if you dont have many HDD slots can be cheaper in long run

  • Wait for Black Friday sales to get parts for new rig? Or buy selected parts now? Are there some computer parts that don't generally get a discount beyond 20%?

  • Its available again, but 170.18 each.

    • +1

      Down again to 160.26

  • +2

    Available, but price jacked :/

  • Picked one at $200.32 before discount. came down $160.26 after code, with cashrewards also. For a few bucks difference from original post, no hesitate for me. Thanks OP.

  • Bugger, snoozed and lost!

    • Dunno why it says expired cos I just used the code and got it for $160.

      • Showing out of stock for the WD for me.

  • What does everyone mainly use these ones for? Network storage?

    • +1

RED for Network file storage. 24/7 operation and lower speed more power efficent. Pointless for anything else
Purple for Video surveillance storage. 24/7 operation and higher speed rated to handle multiple camera inputs.

  • I just got one for $160, so not expired yet!

    • the original deal for $156 has expired… it's now $160 (op posted $195 without code, it's now $200)

  • Bought a 1TB WD Blue HDD for PC for $53, not bad :)

    • $53/TB vs $39, and WD blue vs red.

  • +1

    The 8TB have sold out.

  • just a silly question.
if i don't have NAS setup, can i just use a single drive as a storage drive in my pc? Thanks in advance.

  • +2

Everything has been jacked up from yesterday lol..

    Ironwolf 4TB now $179, WD Red 4TB now $179, WD Red 8TB now $367 ($50 higher than yesterday's deal)..

    • +1

Bah, what a bunch of jackanapes. Well it was a bargain until the price jacking.

  • Everything appears to be in stock again, but looks like they've jacked their prices up since this post went live. Everything is at least $40 more expensive this morning.

    • Noticed the same too. MSY getting hit with that huge fine by the ACCC recently. And now this price jacking. Is there any honest PC retailers about??????

  • +1

What a joke. Ordered 2 early yesterday when this first came up and apparently they don’t have any stock of the 4tb reds even though they are still advertising them and they have cancelled my order

    • That's BS, I'm going to be so angry if they do that to me too.

      • Wouldn't surprise me that they are trying to maximise profits. Even at the jacked up prices, it is probably still cheaper than many PC retailers after the 20% ebay discount?

        • It's still cheaper by about $15 but no where near 20‰ off.
