How better are the photos from current flagship phones ?

      Is that a joke?

Honestly? Mobile phones are improving at a dramatic rate and despite my belief that it would be impossible, they are starting to put larger sensors in mobile phones (This is based on my 10 second googling of phone sensor sizes).

        iPhone X sensor is 1/2.0"
        RX100 series is 1"

Given the sensor size, I think in full daylight flagship phones will perform adequately. However when you consider low light conditions the RX100 series will show significant superiority.

This is also ignoring the fact they have full manual control, optical zoom with high quality lenses and several specialist camera features built in.

        *I have the RX100m3 and a Galaxy S8.

If they find a way to put a full frame sensor in a rx100 body, I will be the first one in line. The A7 series is a bit too big.

The RX1R has been on the market for several years now.

        • +1

The iPhone X sensor is 1/3" which is a lot smaller than the RX100 sensor

Why are people getting offended if I compared a 4 year old point and shoot to latest flagship smartphones with AI chips with enhanced optics/features?

      • +1

Probably because you're a space ninja which makes you as sneaky as hell.

    • In good lighting, flagship phones do really well it will likely be down to personal preferences. In low lighting you will want the larger sensor that the RX100 has, or live with the aggressive processing of the cellphone and lose a lot of detail (but it could still be enough for you).

Basically, flagship phones have replaced the low end compact cameras of yesteryear but they are still not on par with premium compacts. It depends entirely on how you are using your photos.

As a side note, be very wary of all the ads boasting of cell phone camera performance: for example, this is the setup used in the "shot on iPhone" ad series - it is completely unrealistic.

  • RX100 3 for that price even after 20% discount? Would rather get Canon G7X Mark 2 which has a better flip screen and is the top favorite small vlogging camera for a lot of YouTubers.

    • A quality EVF is far rarer in tiny cameras than a flip screen, and makes this really stand out.

      This price isn't exceptional though.

      • Depends on what one wants to use these small point-and-shoot cameras though, isn't it? For vlogging, I don't think one cares that much about electronic viewfinder really.

And here's a good vlogging comparison between the two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ4rrSmupDk

MK3 has been this price since 2014 if I recall correctly, very interesting

By the way, Camera Store has about 5 units of this camera now, local stock, and they come down to $687.2 after the 20% discount: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-Cyber-shot-DSC-RX100-III-Di…

It's been at this price for atleast 2 years now and been part of many 20% sales. What's the bargain?

  • +1

Wait for the next round of Sony eftpos promotion before buying any Sony camera or lens

    Most likely around December

Waiting to buy the 85mm 1.8

  • I have had mine for at least 3 years maybe 4 now… and I have never had the need to upgrade to the IV or even V version. I will use my RX100III until it dies.

BTW, I got my one for much lower than this 20%-off price from Michaels in Melbourne - long before Sony released the much much more expensive newer versions.

  • Beautiful camera. Use it more than our full frame Nikon with Pro glass.

  • Watch out for second hand products from Ted's ebay. Many people experienced that Ted's ebay selling secondhand products as brand new.
I have asked Ted's offline shop, they said Ted's ebay's some products are demo.
