Telstra to Offer Unlimited Broadband Plan

I recently called Telstra to purchase one of their broadband nbn plan. I am currently a Bigpond cable customer and when I checked my monthly usage for the month (to figure out which data quota plan I want to purchase) I was surprised that Telstra moved me to an unlimited plan, even the Sales guy I was talking to was quite surprised as he was not told anything yet.

I then found this news:

Here's hoping by offering unlimited data Telstra won't have the same capacity issue as the other nbn provider :)

  • Here's hoping by offering unlimited data Telstra won't have the same capacity issue as the other nbn provider :)

I was slightly disappointed with the unlimited offering. I was getting 1TB which was enough for me and I could upgrade to 2TB.

    I'm hoping speed doesn't decline.

  • Same noticed on Monday that my 1TB NBN now says unlimited

  • I'm expecting my connection which never dropped below 85mbit will now drop below that regularly, which will make me sad

  • Just noticed they dropped the price of the 1000GB plan by $10 bucks since I recontracted few weeks ago… guh.

    • jump onto 24x7 chat and see if they'll credit you the amount

      • +1

No dice, they want me to comeback in 60days and charge me $50 bucks to recontract. like WTF.

        • +13

send me a pm with your details (username/contact number). I'll lodge an internal complaint for you (i work for telstra)

        • @supasaiyan: this is manager material; here's to hoping for a speedy promo.

          @supasaiyan:

Want to thank Supasaiyan for all his help! A Telstra employee contacted me and applied a credit so my recontracted plan was same as current offerings.

  • Interesting. Will be keeping an eye on this!

They may be offering unlimited broadband, but all there plans are now PAYG calls. Although this might not affect many people with unlimited mobile plans, however please keep this in mind.

    • Many people have mentioned on WP that you can get the 10/- for included calls waived if you ask nicely.

  • +1

I don't see anything online about unlimited but I do see that it has in bold , 15Mb/s standard evening speed. 7pm - 11pm for the address I checked.

    • That's what they say for all their plans if you don't purchase speed boost.

      • Just saw on the news, all companies have to say this now.

Check, say, tpg, they say for the 100mb/s plan speeds are 12-100

  • Can't wait. 1TB doesn't go as far as it used to.

    • neither does 200Gb…

  • +1

    Woohoo !!!!

I was paying $80 for 200Gb… Was about to upgrade and now getting unlimited for $80!!!!!

    • Tell AussieBB to put that in their pipe and smoke it!

  • Yup Mine's on Unlimited now too Woohoo !!

But will be interesting to see how the speeds/service go now but here's hoping for nothing bad

Next step is default 100/40 for all.

  • Merged from Announcement: Free Telstra ADSL / NBN Plans Upgrade to 1000GB (or Unlimited) for Existing Customers

Just got an email from Telstra that my plan for upgraded. If this doesn't belong here please move to forum.Enjoy. Not sure if it's targeted. Data might vary friend on which plan you are on.

FYI : My account reads 1200gb. Sweet.

Great news! We understand how important it is to have enough data. That's why we want to do better for you and ensure you have the data you need for today, and in the future.

As a thanks for being with us, your new monthly data allowance on your Telstra Medium Bundle plan is 1000GB and you can start using this now. This upgrade will also appear on your home broadband bill.

I got upgraded to unlimited. $80 cable plan. VIC

    • They have been promising this (via email) for ages and finally it happened.

    • Telstra changed their broadband plans recently and also upgraded existing plans which is nice.

    • Wow, I've been upgraded as well - I was on a 500GB (upgraded in 2015 from 200GB originally in 2012) Telstra cable plan ($78/month). Nice.

    • I got $69 from 400GB to 1.2 TB and the email says 1TB so not going to complain for $69 bucks!

    • Oh nice I am with TPG unlimited, my plan is still unlimited.

      • +13

I'd rather have unlimited Telstra than unlimited TPG.

        • +4

          Telstra: 24 month contract
          TPG: No Contract

I know which company I would pick in a competitive market…

You can't honestly believe that Telstra, the company known for not being competitive, will stay competitive for the next 24 months.

        • +2

I'd rather speak to an Australian on the phone than someone overseas while navigating through 20 different menus just to get to that point.

          • +7

@Tacooo: Telstra have overseas call centres too

          • -5

@Tacooo: @Flyingmoo: That was my point. TPG are Australian based call centres.

          • +1

            @Tacooo: @potplanty:

iinet are not - aren't they a TPG subsidiary?

we get South Africa when we've had problems

          • -7

@Tacooo: @sandp: Other way around - TPG are an iiNet subsidiary. Regardless, I know for a fact iiNet have some Aussie call centres.

          • +2

@Tacooo: @potplanty: TPG is the parent company of iiNet.

          • @Tacooo: @MickeyJ: Touche. Either way, I enjoy the downvotes for factual points about Aussie call centres (being a customer I actually know that part). The group mentality is strong.

I'd rather be with an RSP that doesn't offer unlimited plans.

        • +2

Why? Depends where you are. In Shepparton, Telstra is far worse then TPG. On TPG I didn't drop below 15 Mb/s during peak times on a 25/10 Plan. My neighbor gets regular peak congestion dropping speeds down to 5 Mb/s on Telstra, that is a 100/40 plan. He constantly complains, constantly gets the run around. We are both on FTTP. Neither Telstra or TPG provide sufficient peak bandwidth.

For the record I am now on Aussie Broadband since the double data promo, 50 Mb/s plan and doesn't drop below 44 Mb/s ever. If you want a reliable service where you get the speeds you expect, highly recommend them.

        • @mathew42: Then what Telco will you be moving to?

      • I had to go with Optus or Telstra if I wanted better than ADSL2+. Tried Optus cable unlimited and it was so bad I had to break contract. Went with Telstra cable, so unlimited is welcome for me.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have NBN providing choice of ISPs when it comes to 100Mbit speeds.

Pretty crap considering my house was on the nbn rollout map for September 2013, then Abbott and Turnbull came in and ruined everything and I still can't get it!

    • +1

Was on a Telstra Global Bundle, which had originally 200GB, then it was upgrade to 500GB, now it's unlimited.

    • +1

Good NEWS…I got this too :)
      Wouldn't of known if I didn't see it here….Thanks

    • Was on 1000GB NBN and moved to unlimited…

    • +3

      I don't trust Telstra

      • +1

Same, I don't think they will provision more bandwidth.

Instead, this seems to be a ploy to try and make customers more happy before they decide to disconnect and move to more reputable telecomms.

    • Got the announcement email yesterday too. Like others was on a 200Gb plan that go upgraded to 500Gb and now 1000Gb. Our household of 5 still only averages ~250Gb a month

    • +1

I guess it is time to move to Aussie Broadband.

Telstra is going to have massive congestion during the peak periods now it is close to or actual unlimited (with AUP)

    • +1

Mum was on a 50GB ADSL plan and got bumped up to 200GB.

      • Ditto for my Mum..

    • +1

      I went from 1000gb to 2000gb…..meh.

    • +1

I joined Telstra because it WASN'T unlimited. Unlimited usually means something's gotta give (speed). My plan has been upgraded to unlimited for 6 days now, and so far so good (haven't dropped below 95Mbps the entire 1.5 years I've been on FTTH NBN, not having peak congestion in my area is goooood). Here's hoping it stays that way, but I'm not optimistic for the future.

      • I wonder if congestion in peak hour is sufficient grounds to break the contract?

    • I didn’t get anything… although I did just recontract to their new 1000gb bundle.

    • Old news. Its already in the forum

    • Cool. But have they upgraded their backhaul/CVC to cope with these increased quotas?

    • I appreciate Telstra applying this to my plan but I really wish they would improve my download/upload speeds instead. They are atrocious at the moment so I would never be able to exceed my current cap even if tried.

    • I don't get it - I signed up for 500GB + 500GB (=1TB), a Home Internet Medium Bundle with 500GB bonus data pack. Always showed up as 1,000GB as my Available Data in the Telstra 24x7 app. Now got the email that I'm on 1TB - app still shows I have the same 1TB. What's going on here?

      Also, my email said:

As thanks for being with us, your new monthly data allowance on your Telstra Home Internet Medium Bundle 500GB plan is 1000GB and you can start using this now. This upgrade will appear on your home broadband bill in February.

    • I believe that Telstra issued devices report daily the use of usage and this is used to dynamically maintain suitable CVC.

I read it as “we will buy just enough”….

    • +3

I would prefer if they halved my cost and left my quota as it is!

      • that would be lovely!

  • Merged from PSA: Telstra (Really) Unlimited Broadband Rolls Out For Existing Users Paying Over $99

Received email from Telstra (4 days ago): my HFC plan is now unlimited at the same 100Mbit speeds from now onwards and apparently this applies to all current users spending over $99 for broadband.

Woohoo! Finally unlimited internet from an ISP that won't slow to a crawl.

Also: existing users paying under $99 have their data allowances doubled.

    • Yeah i was quite impressed with this. Though noticed my internet does seem a little slower than normal. But can now download GTA5 :D

    • +2

Woohoo! Finally unlimited internet from an ISP that won't slow to a crawl.

Well….. Not at the MOMENT, give them time as all the leaches flock back to Telstra for 'fast' internet at unlimited downloads.

I for one was disappointed at the unlimited change. Should have increased it to 2 or 3TB a month. Heaps of data and would keep the mega leaches away.

    • Ours changed over back on the 13th, with the end of the cycle. They stopped counting data on the website about a week ago. (It's been at 2.8TB used since the 25th)
