I’m incredibly excited to introduce you to Mungi. Our team is proudly based in Melbourne.

Mungi was created by a team of savvy consumers who wanted a better internet service provider.

    Hi everyone!

The team at Mungi are available on live chat and ready to answer your questions!

If you currently have FTTP, we can get you connected before the end of our day :)

    Cheers,

    Mungi

How much/long to run FTTP to my location?

My last business signed a 4-5 year contract…

      • We have no contracts, however our network operates on the nbn network.

        Are you currently on nbn?

        • +2

Nope and will get HFC somewhere between now and 2022 if not delayed…

Live in a block of houses and thinking about asking them to sign up for FTTP…

        • @NGPriest:

I see. You may want to revist us once you have an idea when nbn is coming to your area.

You can check your address at https://www.nbnco.com.au/

        • +4

          @NGPriest:

You don't get to pick what NBN service you will be supplied with. Once NBN is connected to your area it will be whatever of the mix mode they end up using. FTTP is not being rolled out much anymore.

        • +1

@Flyingmoo: You are incorrect. Bill Morrow said the contrary on 4Corners. Here is the transcript

BILL MORROW, CEO NBN: If a home owner really feels it's important to have these higher speed capabilities going into their house, we have something called Tech Choice Programme to where they can pay the incremental costs to bring fibre all the way up inside the home, and that's been a programme that's been in place now for a few years.

GEOFF THOMPSON: That can be thousands of dollars.

Sometimes tens of thousands of dollars.

BILL MORROW: That's right, yes, but if it's that important for the consumer, about them paying for that, rather than passing the load on to every other user, that's the concept behind it.

GEOFF THOMPSON: But their neighbour might have got it for free.

BILL MORROW: They may have, and the neighbour should consider themselves fortunate that they got in at that particular time, and this is just the way it works.

Some motorways are closer access to your home than others, and it's no different when it comes to the broadband network that's being built across Australia.

        • +9

@alvian: So basically "**** you, **** your neighbours, **** all consumers and **** the Australian public that funded this piece of crap".

        • @potplanty: lulz

        • @alvian:

I'm not being forced onto a faraway motorway though, Bill Morrow, you clown!

        • @Flyingmoo: Planning on signing up my street to FTTP, either via Uecomm or a private company or rolling it out myself…

        • +3

@potplanty: I'm Going To Build My Own Highway With Blackjack and Hookers…

In Face, Forget The Highway And The Blackjack! Eh, Screw The Whole Thing!

    • +3

Have you purchased adequate CVC bandwidth to cater for your customers? And how quickly do you purchase extra CVC bandwidth when customer numbers increase so everyone gets the speeds they pay for?

      • We're constantly monitoring our network to ensure it remains smooth and stable. We check our usage daily and run our own speed tests. If there is a need for additional bandwidth, an order would be made right away

  • +14

What is the soft contention ratio?

      • +3

Do you offer a static IP option? Do you use Carrier grade NAT?

        • Hi scrimshaw,

We offer static IP at $9.95 per month. All services are currently activated with a dynamic IP address.

We're planning to offer free static IP later in 2018.

      • +27

The whole business-in-confidence contention ratio across RSP's is really disappointing. Someone needs to pluck up the courage (if you are confident you have made the right decision) and start making the contention ratios public.

The transparency across the NBN whether it be with the namesake organisation or the RSP's is abysmal.

I am buying a service and you won't tell me what I can expect when all others are using the service? Pretty bad imo.

        • -1

          I absolutely understand.

We're still growing our network and we plan to have a real-time service status map (as we do on our current web hosting business).

Our master plan is to reduce costs by having a shared support team and merging IP transit (so we can get better rates.

        • +5

          @MungiDreamIT:

Competitive on cost is a good thing, and I doubt you will find an OZB on here that doesn't agree solely on the face of it.

But unless we are paying peanuts (zapals anyone?) for something, quality of service is right up there in the list of priorities.

When you say service status, is that availability or real time average speeds in a local area?

I would be happy to pay 100/m for 100/40 and 1TB if I am getting >75/30 at all times.

I don't know if that is econmoically feasible for an RSP, if not, @#!$ the gov's CVC and their need to recoup real funds rather than productivity gains in the economy. Anyway, that is more a reddit rant than ozb.

I do wish you all the best, i will just ask if you can say why releasing the ratio would/could be detrimental to your business?

        • @Andoes:

We're looking at adding a real-time average speed for each POP.

Mungi and our other brand has been cashflow positive since day one :)

        • +1

          @MungiDreamIT:

          Nice. I'll take that.

        • @Andoes:

          Awesome, great to hear.

        • +1

          @MungiDreamIT:

Will check you out if my HFC ever gets installed.

Best of luck with your ventures til then. Thanks for the speedy replies.

        • @Andoes:

          Have a great day :)

      • The ACCC may start forcing better disclosure from RSP's. If you advertise lightning 100 services, people are going to expect 100Mbps, and if you can't offer it then you will be offering refunds like Telstra. At some point either the contention ratio or an "average" speed will probably need to be disclosed in every rsp's marketing.

  • +6

out of all the names for internet companies, you went with "mungi"?

is it pronounced mun-GEE? or mun-GUY?

    • +15

      Hi supasaiyan,

The name Mungi, which is pronounced as Mung-ee, is a word from the Tharawal people of NSW, which refers to lightning.

We're proud to mention our Australian heritage and background. We're committed to ensuring all operations are kept in Australia.

      • +9

are you confident with your unlimited data and won't end up like buzztelco ?

        • Hi phunkydude.

Absolutely. I understand that many of our fellow OzBargainers have had numerous issues with their current and previous provider.

We use our other brand (a web hosting business) to ensure 24/7 Australian support and a smooth and satisfying experience.

        • I agree. Once burned, twice shy. But good luck Mungi. I'm not sure I've heard smooth used as an adjective to an internet service.

        • @Daabido:

All the best! Don't forget, there's no setup fees, no contracts, and depending on your connection type, we don't require VLAN tagging.

And if you're in a FTTP area and have nbn already, we can get you connected in a few hours.

        • No ISP can (honestly) 'guarantee' anything. I've been with several who promised this won't change, and that won't happen… Two ISPs did exactly what they promised me they wouldn't - one of them did it just a week later and the person that promised me was one of the three owners!

e.g. They build up the business, one rips the others off, or gets in an argument, or just gets sick of it and forces a sale. Or another ISP just makes an attractive offer. The new owner decides to make more money by changing things, knowing not everyone will leave.

    • +14

It's Mun-guy. The plural of Mungus. Often used as a suffix to Hugh.

      • +2

argonbay; pronounced 'ar-gon-buy'. Ozbargain shorthand for "are [you] going to buy [that]?". Commonly used when someone else is holding the last discounted item that you traveled across the city to buy

Enloop batteries anyone? Mention this comment and we'll include a 4 pack of Enloop batteries with any modem order. :)

        • +5

@MungiDreamIT: OP, you seem to be well versed with OzBargain culture. :)

        • @batrarobin:

Not really, because its eneloop. Not enloop…

        • +1

@batrarobin: I really hope they are well versed with ozb culture and see to it that they don't burn the trust of their potential clients just like what Buzz Telco ended up doing.

Mungi turbo???? so if we pay and extra 19.95 we get less congestion ?? so the 100/40 with congestion is???? 12/2?? 37/8 what? or is it 100/40 ?
    Hello ACCC

      • +40

How are you being transparent if you won’t publish contention ratios and precisely what more is being promised with the premium service?

        • Contention ratio is probably 30:1….but of course do correct me if I'm wrong!

  • How many support staff do you have on staff to support your new and current customers?
I ask as i recently moved to a new provider who has maybe 3 staff to cover its entire customer base.

    • +2

      Hi Beigehornet,

We currently have a team of 7 ready to service and connect your home :)

      • +1

        Good news.

        • We would have you on board! Please get in touch with the team if you have any questions.

  • +4

Telstra refunded nearly 50,000 customers (by voluntary admission to the ACCC) for misleading consumers on speed! https://a.msn.com/r/2/BBEHsPl?m=en-au

I wonder how this will affect other IPSs as precedent is now set.

On topic, do you publish your contention ratios?

    • We perform speed checks for customers on FTTN and FTTB. This is to ensure our customers pay for services that they can actually get depending on the quality of their copper connection.

As mentioned previously we do not publish our contention rations however work is in progress of expanding our network and implementing a real-time network status tool.

      • +16

Then why do you need the Turbo option if customers are getting the speeds they pay for?

        • +3

CVC congestion has nothing to do with VDSL sync speeds.

        • +8

          @MungiDreamIT:

Rep, I was thinking of joining, but if you cannot provide a clear answer (just copying and pasting a script from above), then no deal for me.

Not a good attitude to have whilst trying to build a customer base.

  • Vocus backhaul - same as BuzzTelco.

All comes down to who has better service - personal opinion if Mung's worth the extra $5/mo. BuzzTelco seems great when it works (which mine is working, so I'm happy) but pretty frustrating when you have issues I've heard - apparently their support isn't the most organised. Mung might be worth the extra $5 if their support is more organised and professional.

    • Dyl, we're absolutely focused on providing excellent customer service. You can get in touch with our Aussie team on live chat, email, ticket support and facebook message :)

      • But how are you going to provide excellent service if you are using Vocus. Why are you guys cheaping out on backhaul provider ?? Is Vocus so much cheaper than say AAPT ? You are starting with a big cloud from Day 1 deciding to go with Vocus. You should talk to their network engineers in Melbourne , I just say WOW LOL

        • Interesting. They don't have network engineers in Melbourne to my knowledge… What happened?

    • Same thing for AusBBS, while it is an ok service, their support us shoooocking.

      • We really hope we can show you how much our team care with ensuring awesome service :)

        • But if Vocus has no idea what they are doing and cant resolve, you business model goes down. Do you have a 99.999x speed SLA with them or get paid $50 per end-point per hour as compensation. Hope you have decided the SLA and not pre-selected one of those tiers from Vocus, then you are doomed.

      • I personally haven't had any support issues or congestion with ABB. Much better than my previous provider (internode).

      • Agreed…

They are completely incompetent of supplying anything vaguely resembling support.

  • -1

    Hi OP,

I am located in 6107 postcode (FTTN), what sort of ping should I be expecting with your connection. (Are we talking ~10-30ms or is it going to be ~80-110ms like with MyRepublic)

    • +3

Ping to where? You haven't mentioned what you want to connect too

      • To the nearest speedtest server located in Perth.

    • +1

      Hi batrarobin,

We have a POP in Perth, you would be looking at 10-30ms however this depends on the source of the server.

    • I'm on MyRepublic in 6107, and getting 60ms.
Funny thing is, I complained to them about congestion. They verified my identity, then asked me to send screenshots of speed tests. Amazingly, suddenly all my speed tests are at top speed. So I think they tweaked my connection before asking for speed test results.

      • Oh ok that's not too bad. The best I get is about 80ms on a good day generally it's stays at about 85-90ms. I know it varies a lot depending what server Speedtest is pinging but still it's a significant difference considering I am only about 100m away from the node and subscribed to their Gamer's plan (Static IP).

Do you mind sharing model number of your modem? I am using a Belong modem (in bridge mode) with R8000 running DD-WRT.

        • +1

I'm using the modem which MyRepublic gave me. Can't remember the model, but it's the "Hub+" on the picture here
I get 60ms ping through WiFi. I am actually not running in bridge mode, and am using an Archer D7 for my internal network. I am not on a gamers plan, but on the $60 plan. The 60ms ping is when I select a Melbourne server (all our traffic goes through Melbourne). MyRepublic uses the Optus network, but I get fastest speedtest results against Telstra in Melbourne. I am ~400-500m from the node, and get a max line rate of ~85Mbps (sync speed). Maximum actual speed I ever got was 78Mbps; usually it tops just above 70Mbps.

I used to be with Exetel using a Netcomm modem. My line rate was significantly worse. Not sure whether the modem was to blame.

  • +13

Don't waste your time, they use a network they have no control over and can never be in a position to guarantee anything until they have their own network.

Just go to AussieBroadband and save yourself a lot of heartache.

Everyone starting out promises the world but Aussie actually delivered.

    https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2017/04/nbn-congestion-is-forcing…

    • We're still fairly new. As mentioned we're consistently monitoring our network to ensure all our customers can enjoy a smooth experience.

Don't forget that our plans are no contracts, have no setup or disconnection fees. You're welcome to try us out and cancel if you feel the need too. Let us know of your new RSP and we'll be glad to help transition you to them.

      • +3

We're still fairly new. As mentioned we're consistently monitoring our network to ensure all our customers can enjoy a smooth experience.

I appreciate that but it's been said a thousand times before. I wish you all the best but based on past experience I know what the result will be.

        • Yeah, I agree. New ISP's offering great pricing are very common. But as soon as they get a few customers because they become popular, it's all downhill. The economic model of how NBN sells capacity is flawed. No ISP which has to buy capacity from the NBN can get around this. It's a ridiculous waste of money that ISP's have to start building their own backhaul network like AussieBB (and MyRepublic is doing it too, apparently).

        • @Make it so: We're incredibly lucky to have our other business supporting us. This means we can reduce expenses for both businesses and allows more funds to be spent on adequate bandwidth.

        • @MungiDreamIT: So you are piggybacking off someone else's overheads :)
I hope it works out well for you, and I will check again how you are doing next time I need to change ISP. I am genuinely hopeful that motivated and enthusiastic individuals such as you can salvage the NBN, because Australia needs proper internet.

        • @Make it so: Technically we're piggybacking off ourselves ;)

All the best mate, Have a great day!

        • @MungiDreamIT: Hi, you've mentioned your other businesses several times. Is the name of that business something you can disclose to us?

        • @Bernie_G: Sure have a look at DreamITHost.com.au :)

        • @MungiDreamIT: Thanks. At the risk of nitpicking it looks like that domain has ssl issues atm.

        • @Bernie_G: Oh really? No issues with my browser. I'll follow it up. Thanks for that :)

        • @MungiDreamIT: Weird, my Android browser reported the issue but pc browser seems fine.

      • +2

        monitoring our network

You can't control the Vocus network though.

Agree with Maverick - if you want guaranteed full speed in peak times, go with Aussie Broadband.

        • +1

Why choose Vocus, thats asking for hell and be doomed. Dont tell me you guys have signed up a yearly comment. Show their BD this thread.

    • Agreed, my last 3 ISPs have been Vocus and all of them have had their issues. im done with Vocus.

  • +5

Just a question, if we don't know the contention ratio, how do we know what speeds we can get? The speeds you quote are only the MAX speed we could possibly receive?

    • -7

I don't believe any provider publically posts their contention ratio regardless.

Don't forget that our plans are no contracts, have no setup or disconnection fees. You're welcome to try us out and cancel if you feel the need too.

Let us know of your new RSP and we'll be glad to help transition you to them.

  • +1

I am paying 40$ for 12/1 @ Amaysim . Why should i pay 25$ more to join this service ? Only provider i can think of switching is to ABB with less monthly limit and it will still cost me 40$ .

Please introduce more plans with monthly limit with less monthly charges to be competitive .

    • In this case, our team operates from Melbourne and is available to help 24/7.

      • I can understand that and i can appreciate that but if you had more plans with monthly limits like 100GB etc etc and charges less than 65$ i would def consider your service .

Please introduce more plans with monthly limit with less monthly charges to be competitive .

        • People that want quotas like that should look at what mobile broadband is available to them. e.g. Optus has 100GB or 140GB mobile broadband for $70 per month. And the 100GB version comes with a free tablet over 24 months, which you can immediately sell new, and bring that $70/m down even further.

    • +1

Also looking at Amaysim, its normally $60 down to $40. It seems there's an offer of $20 for 6 months only.

Our 12/1 plan is $64.95 and with the 10% off, it comes down to $58.45 per month. And this discount is for life of the service.

  • i was waiting to get nbn. luckily the subbie was a no-show for the nbn box install, because since then i've came across way too much negative feedback about nbn speeds.

op, i'm with telstra cable, i would like to maintain current speeds should we proceed with nbn. any reason why i should take a chance with mungi instead of the easier route and reconnect with telstra (given the absence of contention ratio info)? current plan is $80/month for 700gb. without the 100mbps "upgrade".

    • That's unfortunate to hear about the nbn contractor.

As mentioned, no provider publically mentions their contention ratio (as far as I know). Also our plans have no contracts, no setup fees or disconnection fees. You're welcome to try us out otherwise you can then contract with Telstra.

    • +1

I’m in very similar boat and will likely be staying on Telstra HFC until the very last moment. I’m sure Telstra will offer some sweetheart deal at the last moment to keep us, and maybe NBN will address severe congestion problems by then!
