    Thanks OP!
Now just waiting on some RGB LED down lights!

  • is there a benefit to having two of these? e.g two gateways for a bigger house

    • Yes, i would assume the signal would have a maximum range, so if you have a large multi-level house a second one may be needed. Somebody mentioned though that in theory plugged in zigbee device eg lights & sockets should act as a repeater but im unsure if Xiaomi have deactivated this feature to make you buy a second gateway.

Also, there is a limit of devices per gateway which i think is 32.

    • The range on one gateway is pretty good (covers my whole house, and the button that sits in the car in the driveway). there is a maximum number of devices though; I have heard it was 15, but I've not been able to confirm that. I'm about to hit 15 zigbee devices though, so I'll probably be able to confirm soon.

      • I also heard this 15 device rumor, but according to xiaomi it is 30 subdevices. Maybe a firmware update increased the number

        • I have this gateway (2nd gen with FM radio) with current firmware.

          It's definitely more than 15.

Haven't reached 30 devices yet, so I don't know what the actual limit is.

        • @KentT: May I ask as Im leaving for holidays soon, would this device instead of ringing for any reason during the night be able to stay silent and just send me an alert on my phone in case someone opens my room?

        • @Konstantin:
          No idea, sorry.

I only use the gateway as an intermediary. All my automation is through Home Assistant.

  • Is the gateway included in this specific to the devices included in this kit? Or is it compatible with other Xiaomi products?

    • +1

It's their standard Zigbee gateway, compatible with all their zigbee products.

The amount of call backs to Chinese servers these apps do, I'm always hesitant to use Xiaomi. Specially for anything that can be used to access/secure my home and is connected to the internet.

    • +7

Block internet access to these devices via a trusted router (ASUS, DD-WRT, etc.). Setup a VPN to access these devices remotely. Better yet, probably just avoid them.

      • +1

        Or use Home-assistant.io

        • Well yeah, these type of things are also useful. Homebridge is another one. You can run a Homebridge server and restrict individual IoT device internet access so only the trusted server interfaces with local devices. In any case, people probably want to block internet access to devices they don't fully trust and use a bridging solution with external access. I think this extends to trusted brands too – Philips, Belkin, etc. do you really need light globes with access to your LAN and the internet, or worse, do you need cameras/microphones with said access?

      • Most times you have to use a proprietary app to access the features, and that is the thing that's contacting the Chinese servers. I know the products I've used in the past you couldn't talk to the devices using third party applications.

  • +6

Great value, as it includes free monitoring by the Chinese government

    • Best course of action is to restrict access to internet from untrusted devices. That way, even if there is anything weird going on, it is intranet bound. This won't really protect against damage done within a network or even hijacking unrestricted connections, but it's a start. At least you can access the device locally, or via a VPN and it'll be more secure than just letting random devices have full access to your network.

    • So it's like Google Home and Alexa but for the Chinese then? :P

    • You negged on a spelling mistake ?

  • Aren't all these cheaper if you buy them separately?

    • Possibly. I got ~$48 USD on Gearbest (without the outlet thing which they don't seem to sell seperately). But that is with GBs notoriously long shipping times, whereas this deal should be delivered in a week or so.

      • Can vouch for the geekbuying shipping time, i ordered this on the 3rd during another deal and it'll be delivered this monday (13th), just missed friday delivery.

    • +1

Based on my last check, if you got each item separately at best price you would probably save about AU$5, and that's with GearBest shipping times.
Assuming you actually want all of the components, this is a good deal IMO.

    How reliable are these?

I have the broadlink equivalent and it seems like before a motion sensor can trigger an outlet it needs to phone China to check first and 10% of the time they don't answer.

    • My experience is not that: I have run a zigbee power point adapter and motion sensor on the same gateway and they're very responsive.
Triggering xiaomi lights on the same wifi network also seems really snappy.

I'm also using Home Assistant and I've found that somewhat more hit and miss (but that may be me, not Home Assistant - I'm still getting used to the automation stuff on it).

      • My pantry has a door sensor that switches on both the ceiling light and one of these zigbee sockets for under-shelf led strips.

        Works well, no delay.

    • +3

I've used Broadlink, Orvibo and Xiaomi before. Xiaomi by far has been the best out of all of them.

    • phone China to check first

It must be first checking for any sanctions and embargoes

  • Is the Wifi socket included in this set a zigbee version? Anyone knows?

    • Just to clarify you mean this? If so, yes.

      • Yes, the outlet.. Thank you!

        • It's called a gateway.

        • +1

          @Lorindor:
Yeah they're talking about different things.

The answer is still yes - the socket/outlet/switch is zigbee. It's not the WiFi version.

  • how does this system actually work? for example for each sensor/device where does it get "power" from?

    • +2

The window sensor has a CR2032 battery (lasts for 2 years apparently) and the human body sensor has a CR1632 battery (not sure how long this lasts for).

  • Can we combine this with a wifi xiao mi system, all run from the app?

    • Yes. All controlled via the Mi Home app.

  • Is it just IR or RF emitting as well?

  • I am told the setup and App controls are all in Chinese.

    • The Mi Home app used to be all in Chinese. Pretty much all of it is in English now.

    • Only the setup is in Chinese. As for the app, there is an English version for Apple.

  • Bought a kit. Thanks.

My plan is to have smart lighting in kitchen when we renovate.

I'll install led strips under the top cupboards top light the benches and have them turn on and if with motion. Might also do strips above the cupboards as well.

I assume the best way to do this would be a zigbee 240volt power outlet that supplies a small transformer that powers lots of low voltage led strips.

The smart led strips are more expensive and do rgb multiple colours where as i only need white.

    • I'm at the same phase as you. Doing a reno and thinking to install led strips for both top and under the cabinets. A pity that yeelight doesn't do white smart led strips as I'm sure it will be 1/2 the cost of the RGB ones!

  • .. there has been some general comments about the range of the gateway, any idea/indicative range? I'm planning to place one of the sensors in the garage (detached from home, but potentially 10-15 metres from the gateway) but not sure if it's in range.

  • Hi does anyone know how feasible it is to hook up a battery powered powerful siren to these things (that you could mount in the roof)

    • what is the siren that you wanted to add on? I am interested too. Thank you. (technically it should be feasible but it is wireless and different brand, the communication may be different for the automation to work perfectly) Eg, if house broke in then sound the alarm. the main issue i can think of is, how do you turn the alarm off, you need another command to turn it off, which i am not sure if it will work or not with this gateway.)
