Wouldn't a real Snes classic mini for $119 be better than this?

    • This has nes SNES but sega

      • +3

It can install retroarch thus play more than snes games. Retro pie is based on retroarch too.

        • Retroarch can be installed on mini SNES also

        • @bti_jet: yes that's what I'm saying.

        • @allenhori:

Pro: Pi got wifi and bluetooth, and you can get usb adapter for genuine console / arcade controllers

Cons: these cheap controllers are crap compare with the snes mini controllers, getting 2 good contorllers might cost more than $80 :D

    • +2

Not only that but this is running Retropi so it's can do more than just SNES games.

Have a look at the item description on eBay for more info.

    • No, this can play a heap more than 20 selected games. And also just about every old console you can think of.

      • SNES Mini can do the same.

        • -1

I didn't neg you but it can't do the same.
It can't play movies (kodi) it can't play old Atari console games. Amiga. Vectrex Sega, NeoGeo etc etc

        • Obviously people on here don't know about hakchi

        • +1

          @PVA:

Yes it can play all other consoles, no kodi.

I am running nes,SNES,neo geo on my mini snes

        • -2

          @bti_jet:
          Nin64, ps1, amiga.
          Using ps4 ps3 wireless contollers

    • Not really. With this you can play games from NES/SNES/Mega Drive/Master System/Playstation/Game Boy/etc, and you can have thousands of them installed at once.

It also has kodi and all the extras that the SNES Classic Mini doesn't.

  • You can do a lot more with one of these than a snes mini, my mini is gathering dust. I had issues with the power cable that came with my pi 3 kept showing the lightening symbol in the top right hand corner don't know if this is a common problem with these bundles.

    • I've made quite a few of these and the lightning bolt means it's not getting enough power. It can be caused by a damaged micro usb plug too.

      • Yeah I just replaced the cable using the one that came with the snes mini and working fine.

I wonder what sort of audience this has, you'd think people who know about this would have the skills to set it up themselves and would get it done a bit cheaper. Not to mention a Wii with two classic controllers would only be about $60 and can play Wii and GC games as well (funny how the trend seems to be, the cheaper it is the more things it can do).

    • +3

Seconded, Wii from cashies for $19 and a few hours of tweaking and you can has a pretty sweet bit of gear that'll play most old school ROMs as well as awesome wii and GC multiplayer games.

      • We have a wii set up like that and I haven't used it for years and the kids rarely use it. It's not that hard to buy a raspberry pi 3 and set it up yourself as mentioned above.

        • I left mine with a housemate who adored it. Waiting for a cheap WiiU t do another one.

Really good to project onto a wall and do beers and Wii Sports

    • +2

Mate I have made over 20 of these and sold them and it's basically not possible to do it cheaper than this yourself. It's better to buy the best quality components you can and spend a bit more money.

    • It's actually pretty tough to get a raspberry pi 3 + case + 2 controllers + power adapter + SD Card for $98 landed at your door, not to mention that you would then have to spend time setting it up, so even though I have done this myself for a Raspberry Pi 1, I'd be inclined to just buy this.

  • +5

May as well buy the officially licensed and legal product at this price.

    • +1

That is extremely limited compared to this. Not really the same.

    • This does a hell of a lot more than the licensed one, and there's technically nothing illegal about this.

  • +3

Note that this has Kodi on it too, and that the rpi3 is more than strong enough to run as a very functional media box setup.

Just some info on the pi shop trademarking the word retropie and then issuing takedowns via ebay for other sellers.

    • +4

tbh I nearly made purchase. But this is seriously screwed up…used what community offers as free knowledge then trademark? wth…

      • +5

you have a shop that trades purely on assembling a product that contravenes copyright laws, skirting it slightly by not providing the roms but all the tools in order to infringe. is it so out of question that the same establishment would use other tricks to get ahead in life?

EDIT: negative vote from me as you can assemble for cheaper and also learn something along the way! controllers x2 = $11, pi = $50, psu and case ~$20, sd card a few dollars

        • +3

think I just dont understand how government allows them trademarking things that never created by them. Gov should really only allows inventors to apply for trademarks.

        • Thanks also to peter05 for showing that this isn't a good deal. I'll add to his list of components a very helpful youtube guide on how to set the pi up yourself if anyone is interested.

        • +1

It's basically the same price to assemble this all yourself, especially when you factor in setup time over just plugging and playing like this one. While I can and have done this in the past with the first raspberry pi, I'd rather just pay a few bucks to get someone else to do it at this stage honestly.

    • +4

That's pretty bad! Thanks for letting everyone know :)

    • +3

      Damn, that’s scum right there

    • +2

NOTE: The Trademark was for a gaming accessory in the "Game Console/Accessory class" - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/202080343742

Retropie Software itself would need to be in the "Software" trademark class. We have however given the trademark to the co-founders of the Software.

      • Thanks great to hear. I found a thread on the retropie forum as well but couldn't see that info in it. Much appreciated.

      • +5

Quote by Rob from Logicware (eBay store w/ 100% feedback).

"They (pi guy) registered as a trademark Retropie here in Australia and immediately issued vero takedown orders via ebay.
It was purposefully directed at their 'competitors'…I strongly urge you to consider where you purchase your next Raspberry Pi from. You'll find gaming consoles on ebay under Retropi. So if you want to buy retropie via ebay, search for retropi (most of us have adopted that)"

        • +1

I purchased a pi 3 from logicware at the start of the year and it was a smooth transactionđź‘Ť

bahahah scum or genius? scum on a personal level but genius in a business sense. but hey its nothing personal, just business.

      • +1

I love how it is ok for businesses to be immoral, but personally it is usually frowned upon.

guess what.. it is big businesses doing the most tax evasion around the world, dropping salaries to workers so more profit for investors. fugg that.

        • -1

then become an investor. buy their shares.

        • @dabell: point missed entirely

    • That is very low act. But I get if there is any backlash from Nintendo, Sega, Sony etc, they will be targeted first based on the name.

Am not surprised by the above post from Kulprit.

From my view this retailer should not be trusted. I still have the eBay message history as proof of the following.

I placed and order on the last ebay deal and the seller cancelled my order WITHOUT my consent and then tried to sell me a more expensive package.

I politely requested several times that the seller reinstate my original purchase and was either ignored or met with absolute condescension.

This ultimately led to eBay having to step in and resolve the issue by reimbursing me with a coupon for the sellers actions and they suggested I leave the seller negative feedback.

I left negative but more importantly, accurate feedback of my experience however the seller contacted eBay to have this removed. When I in turn contacted eBay to find out why the feedback was removed, they conceded that it should not have been removed as it fell well within their feedback policy and that it was certainly accurate and was supported by the message history.

As an apology for their mistake, eBay provided additional compensation however it's a shame that the seller has not paid for his mistakes himself and I wonder how many other negative transactions the seller has managed to have removed.

My suggestion, never buy anything from this seller.

Thanks also to peter05 for showing that this isn't a good deal. I'll add to his list of components a very helpful youtube guide on how to set the pi up yourself if anyone is interested.

    • Ebay not what it used to be

    • wow, what a mess

Better to buy an android box (xiaomi mi box3 for example), install emulator of your choice and sideload emulated games? buy 2 ipega controller. You get to play android games, watch netflix/youtube, plus all emulators. No hacking required

  • +1

I bought from their last deal. Got the Nespi case ( looks like a NES)
They answered any questions I had, here and emails, and once I paid it arrived quick.
I had zero issues with seller or the unit.

  • +3

this isnt about the seller but RPi3 with RetroPie in general,

1 SNES emulator does work but many ROMs will not function at desirable speed (poor frame rate, slowdowns).

2 it also supports MAME but its not FULL PC MAME, but rather subset of. Many MAME Rom will not work, do your homework, your will waste hrs finding compatible ROM set and it will still failed to boot.

However, when it does, it just works.

3 no problem with NES emulators. I guess emulating 8bit 3Mhz CPU is much simpler on 1GH arm chip. :p

not sure how fast the MINI is but sometimes I wonder If rooting/cracking the mini would result in the better performance than rpi3.

    • The mini snes has been cracked for a while now.

Most games I have run play good, some not working properly like sf alpha and firemen are the only ones I have issues with.

There's a fix but too lazy to play around with it

    • Why no one on those how to websites/videos ever mention these points? Puts me off building one

    • So, if I want full Mame (because Alien Vs Predator) and SNES, what's my best bet?

I have an xb1, a ps3 and X360 (somewhere under the house) and an older atom-based htpc. But I'm opening to buying things if I can get drunk and play Vendetta in my loungeroom.

  • does the pi has all the retroarch function include online network play?
anyone want to try online play with me ? I am using windows thou~

    • that would be LAKKA - great on an old laptop or android box.. retro gaming with multiplayer online support.

      • lakka looks similar to retroarch anyway, have you tried the multiplayer online?

        • LAKKA is just a multiplayer front end for retroarch.
